Relievers and Simming

I got into this topic on another board but thought it would be more fitting here...

My question is about relief pitching. I took over a horrible team in my league and am in year 3. I've been making decent improvement. My RPs are killing me though. I have at least 3 guys who are in their early 30s with good numbers in both ratings and career stats. Theyre all getting rocked though.

I had been simming more games this season so I went through 3 weeks and played every game, and each player got at least somewhat better ERA's.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there any methodology (ie if they are MR or setup guy) that might make the cpu make more out of these guys? Any help would be great...

I find that I win 60-75% of my teams games if I play them out. If I sim I get very different results.

Now I have one solo league that I completely play out and another I sim a week at a time with.

I've had several RP's with career numbers that are solid, but in the year I start the league, or in the year "I" acquire them, they flop. Typically, I end up trading/sending down a couple of them, and get good results from bringing up 1-2 young MR's (or SP's with relief ability) to replace them. It's just the strain & aches of management.

Relievers seem to struggle with a new team more than anyone else.

Relievers also seem to be the most inconsistent in the game. Why did the computer highly value those guys?

Some of my top relievers have gone from 2.00 ERA's to 5.00 ERA's in one year and then consistantly be around an ERA of 4. what happened???

I would love to read some comments on how people have dealt with their relievers. I truly believe that the role a reliever plays can affect his performance. Ya know, if you put a Middle Reliever as a Set-up man (and he isnt comfortable with that) he'll struggle. Forces you to look for that guy who CAN be a set-up man.

I usually just stick with them because they are given good money and I am not going to waste my money and time trading for more relievers with the same results.

In magors league, MLB-link below...I have Pedro,Millwood,Armas,Carpenter,Nickle as my starters....one of the best rotations in the league....but my bullpen has cost me alot. AKA a 7-11 record... 6.5games behind now.

I used to have the same problem until I adopted a new policy for my relievers and for drafting new ones:

1. I try never to take a reliever who is Very Inconsistent. These guys need to be dependable and with the limited innings they pitch a few bad outings can blow their Era to hell (and your win totals). If I do have such a reliever I usually make them my mop-up guy.

2. My closer and set-up men are always normal for consistency unless they are absolutely amazing. I try to put the 'inconsistent at times" reliever's in the middle relief roles.

3. Be wary of relying on lefties too much, especially as closers. The computer will not use them effectively and you will see the computer leave them in to get smoked by right handed batters. Usually I try to put the second setup guy as a lefthander as this position is not used as often and the computer seems to use them more effectively. I think this is because they are almost always available to pitch against tough left handers as they are used so seldomly. At most I will use two left handers in my bullpen (unless they are all heads and tails above my righties).

4. Having a Great clutch rating always earns my relievers bonus points when determining which one's to keep and for what roles.

5. I try to put a right-handed strike out artist as my first set up man and/or one with a low inherited runners scoring percentage.

6. Don't be too worried about taking a "prone" reliever. Usually you can get ones with amazing ratings at a very cheap price and due to the limited action they usually see in this role they actually seldom go on the DL in my experiences.

Using this system I have had great success with my bullpens which are often the strength of my teams.
