New York Yankees 2005-2006 Off Season Thread
First, Yankee haters, please keep your crap out of this thread. You've got plenty of other places to spew that stuff. Keep it out of here.
Now that Mazzone went to the Orioles, who do you think they will sign to be the pitching coach? I've been hearing a lot about Guidry, but has he ever been a pitching coach? I also hear he doesn't want to leave his LA home. Other rumors have been Lee Mazzilli for bench coach and Larry Bowa for 3rd base coach. If Bowa does come on, I would hope Sojo stays with the organization in some capacity.

I don't see the logic of adding Larry Bowa. That's just way too combustible of a personality to add to a clubhouse that Torre is fanatical about keeping order in. Why add that to the mix if he's not going to give you any sort of tangible benefit?

Sounds like Bowa was a little surprised by the interest, too. I'm betting Kerrigan gets to be PC.

I say the Yankees number 1 need is to get rid of their owner.

Depends on if the clubhouse needs a little spark of life and fire. Then Bowa's the man for that.

Hey! Get off Eckstein's back!
That's because most of us are taller than him. Seriously...I like Larry Bowa. I think he would be a spark to any team that brings him in if the players aren't thin-skinned crybabies. |

How much spark can a bench coach add?

All I can think of is that Torre feels like he needs a hatchet man. Obviously it's not part of Torre's makeup to start ripping into people and throwing tables, but maybe he's willing to have Bowa do it for him.

I think the biggest offseason question is going to be what the Yankees plan to do with seven starting pitchers. Leiter and Brown are obviously gone, and Johnson and Mussina have two of the spots locked down, but only three of the bunch of Pavano, Wright, Wang, Chacon, and Small (assuming they re-sign him) can start out in the rotation. Small looks like he'd lose out on the starter role, simply because they know he'll work out of the bullpen, but none of the other four has ever done anything but start. Trades don't look like a good solution, since Pavano and Wright look untradeable right now, and it looks to be a big mistake to trade Chacon or Wang. Whoever the new pitching coach ends up being, he's going to have a thorny dilemma to try to solve right off the bat.

Trading Chacon, while not the greatest idea in the world, may not be a bad one, either. Everyone's thinking "it was just pitching in Coors that hurt him." He will never be worth any more than he is right now, and if he can land us a good CF (by which I mean "not Juan Pierre or Torii Hunter") from a team that overvalues him, I wouldn't be opposed to the move.

Chacon and Wright have both pitched out of the pen, but neither did it well. Chacon deserves to be in the rotation; Wright can pitch out of the pen. Assuming Wright himself can stay healthy and effective, I'm sure there will be plenty of chances to fill-in for the regulars.
I don't think the Yanks will re-sign Small; I think he'll end up somewhere like Kansas City, Cincy, or Tampa. I know the Yanks have been trying to get starting pitchers for awhile, but I think they'd be wise to at least look at picking up someone new. Wasn't there a Kevin Brown for Andruw Jones trade rumored at some point? It's too bad that one didn't go down.
