Unusual baseball card from the Baseball Assistance Team and Upper Deck
This unusually wide baseball card set was designed by the charitable organization, The Baseball Assistance Team, who teamed up wih Upper Deck to produce this special 1993 set.
Top: Gil Hodges (Brooklyn Dodgers) makes a great play down the first base foul line, spearing a foul ball before it can go out of play. Ramon Aviles (1952-2010) played on Phillies 1980 World's Championship team
Ramon Aviles, a utility infielder for the 1980 World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies died on January 27,
five days after his 58th birthday in his native Puerto Rico. Aviles hit .277 in 101 at-bats for the '80 Phillies champs. He hit .268 with 2 home runs in 299 MLB games in all or parts of four MLB seasons. |

Jake Thompson - 2000th Phillie
RHP Jake Thompson did not particularly cover himself with glory in 31 game appearances, mostly in relief, for the Philadelphia Phillies spread over three years (2016-2018), but his debut for the team on August 6, 2016 did afford him one distinction that can't be taken away. Thompson made a rare start that day in his MLB debut and he became (according to Phillies franchise and major league baseball historians) the 2000th player to ever play for the Phillies in a regular season game.
The last news I have had on Thompson is that he is now the property of the Texas Rangers. He did not appear in a major league game in 2019. Thompson's 26th birthday was on January 31. (1st baseman, Earl Torgeson (MLB: 1947-1961; Phillies 1953-1955) became the Phillies' 1000th player in their franchise history on Opening Day, 1953. The grand total now as we are about to enter the 2020 season is that 2,081 players have worn Phillies colors in regular season play. |
