Consistency in Historical Player Performance

I've been playing OOTP for many years but just now have gotten into using historical players. I've been surprised by some performances and I'm wondering what's going on.

Ken Griffey, Jr. for example is superb, which I expected. But Brooks Robinson never made the majors. How wide of a variance can I expect if I were to re-start? Will Brooks always under-perform?

Thanks!

Are you in Challenge Mode? If so, you are locked into using the development engine and the game is not designed to be predictable in this mode. If you want historical accuracy, start a league without using Challenge Mode and have the game recalculate the ratings each year based on historical statistics.

I am not in challenge mode. And I actually prefer it be a bit random. I'd like to see if lesser players in real life could have a shot at being an all-star in my league.

There is still significant variability with the settings Orcin suggests.

I did a historical replay starting in 1990. Ty Van Burkelo won ROY and MVP in the same season. He regressed to bring a below average player after a couple of years.

I avoided real stats annual recalculation for a long time because I thought players would track a lot closer to historical than they do. Instead performances are close enough most of the time to be plausible but not so close long-term contracts are danger free.
