1930 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Joe Primeau has won his first Hart Trophy as league MVP.

Primeau has developed into a premiere center on the league's best team. Primeau’s 67 points and 43 assists are both the best ever totals in NHL History. The former record for points in a season has held by Howie Morenz and Newsy Lalonde. Here is the top 10 single season point totals in NHL history.

Here are the award winners for the 29/30 season...

Here are the league all-stars...

As expected, the Maroons dominated. 5 players get an all-star nod. Is this the start of a dynasty?!

Toe Blake is the biggest name selected in the NHL draft this year. He goes first overall unsurprisingly. He immediately becomes Chicago's best prospect. The Black Hawks need some luck. They need Blake to develop quickly, and Red Horner to stay healthy. Here's a look at the draft and Toe Blake.

1930-31 NHL Regular Season

The Montreal Maroons are the clear favorite to win their 3rd straight Stanley Cup.

There is no player ranking page like in OOTP, which is too bad. It seems like the type of feature that can be implemented no matter what sport there is. Instead, there is a player poll published every season. I’ll start showing that every season. Here are this years player poll results.

No Maroons on the list. Maybe the players hate the Maroons.

King Clancy is now a well established vet playing in Detroit. He’s 27 now, and in his 5th season in the NHL. I was looking at the block shots stats, and take a look at the leaderboard halfway through the season.

Wow, Clancy has almost double the blocks then anyone else in hockey. Toughness, bravery, heart. King Clancy is willing to sacrifice for his craft. That’s impressive. Clancy has twice blocked more then 300 shots in a season!!

The 1931 season went like this. We have one great team, we have one awful team. Then we have the middle class, made up of everyone else. Here are the final standings…

The Maroons lose just 7 times, while Chicago wins just 5. Every other team is between 16-20 wins.

The emergence of Charlie Conacher is complete!! He leads the league in goals.

King Clancy leads the league in blocked shots with 195. 70 more then anyone else. That's actually Clancy's lowest total in 5 years!

1931 NHL Playoffs

Round 1

The first ever all New York series takes place. It’s just a small two game total goal affair, but that’s pretty cool.

Charlie Conacher strains his groin in game one, and will miss 3 weeks. Huge blow to the Rangers, but they still manage to win game two, and advance without their star. They will take on the Detroit Falcons who did a number on the Habs 9-5.

Round 2

No Charlie Conacher, no problem. After losing Conacher, the Rangers eliminated the Americans, and the Falcons. Cecil Dillon, Bun Cook and rookie Gus Marker each stepped up to record a point a game against Detroit to advance the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup!

In one of the biggest upsets in league history, the Quakers beat the Maroons in 5 games! Philly won game 4 in OT on a goal by Irv Frew, and got the game 5 shutout from Clint Benedict, who we all remember from his Stanley Cup performance with Pittsburgh a few years ago. Benedict was actually the backup all year, and has taken over the starters job in the playoffs!

For only the 2nd time, the Stanley Cup is guaranteed to be won by an American franchise! Two of New York’s best players are question marks for the finals. Charlie Conacher and Cecil Dillon are both out for game one, and are probably considered day-to-day. Dillion hurt himself in practice before game 1. If they end up playing is anyones guess. Can the Rangers win a title without their two best players?

Game 1

The Stanley Cup is a best of 5 affair now. Dit Clapper scored early, and Clint Benedict made 26 saves. New York missed their two best players today. The Quakers take the opener 2-1.

Game 2

Both Rangers stars remain out for game two, but Earl Robinson played. The best setup man on the team registered 3 assists in New York’s 3-1 win. Robinson has 64 assists over the past two seasons.

Game 3

Bun Cook’s 6th goal of the playoffs was the winner late in the third for the Rangers. They win gme three, 2-1 and amazingly, are just one win away from their first championship without Charlie Conacher and Cecil Dillon.

Game 4

Game four is never close. Hec Kilrea and Frank Peters scored 30 seconds apart in the first. That seemed to take the wind out of Philly’s sails. The Rangers led 4-0 after two, and end up winning 5-0. The Rangers win the Stanley Cup!

1931 NHL Offseason News and Notes

Montreal Maroons center Joe Primeau will take home his second straight Hart Trophy. The league MVP scored 19 times this season, good for 6th in the league, and finished 2nd in assists with 32. He led Montreal to their third straight first place finish in the Canadian division.

Here are the other award winners. It's a Maroon's sweep! They didn't win the big prize though.

Here is the first team NHL all-star squad. I deleted the news item before I could screen shot the 2nd team. Oops.

The Philadelphia Quakers owners decide they are losing too much money and the team can’t continue. The option to move back to Pittsburgh is alive for a few years, but they can’t get a new arena built. Ottawa lost around 60 grand over the previous two seasons. The owners decide to take the year off with hopes of returning soon.

Ok, so this is big news for the league. This means there are a lot of talented players without contracts to play next year. Ottawa had a lot of talent, and Philly just played in the Cup finals. There are some excellent players available on the free agent market starting now!!!

Teams didn’t waste any time. Dit Clapper, the most talented player available, goes to the Leafs, who could really use a boost to their d core. Montreal gets 29 year old Alec Connell, who I guess will now compete with Tiny Thompson for starts. Hap Day also goes to Montreal. He’s 30 now, and might be slowing down some, but he’s still a valuable player to have. The Habs complete their “Ottawa takeover” signing Frank Boucher. He will be the best 2nd line center in all of hockey. Howie Morenz is still the #1 guy.

The Canadiens make a nice trade.

With 3 starting goalies, something had to give. Hainsworth still has star quality ratings. New York should start him as much as they can. He’s 38 though, how much can he really have left! Montreal did good to get a 1st round pick for him.

Gordie Drillon is the first player taken in the NHL draft. The top 3 picks all look pretty good. Chicago needs Drillon to develop fast, as they have no chance to win at the moment.

Montreal takes Pete Kelly with the 6th overall pick, acquired for George Hainsworth.

No logo and uniform changes for the 1931-32 season.

1931-32 NHL Regular Season

The addition of the best former Senators has the Montreal Canadians the favorites to get back to the top of the standings.

Frank Boucher is the smartest, nicest man in hockey!

Boucher

Why would Alec Connell sign with the Montreal Canadiens

This is Connell's career half way through the 31/32 season. He's been a wonderful goalie, whose played in around 300 games. In Montreal, he sits and watches Tiny Thompson. I can't fathom why Connell would join the team least needing a goalie. He can't be ok never playing...

Howie Morenz broke his hand in a late December game with the New York Rangers. Montreal is off to their best start in years thanks to Morenz and the Ottawa signings. At 12-4-2, they have the best record in the NHL by 5 points. Morenz had 17 points in 13 games at the time, and will miss at least 2 months. This is a major blow, and an opportunity. Losing a Howie Morenz should effect this team, but having new signing Frank Boucher able to step in will make the loss much easier to deal with.

The Habs will miss Morenz

Montreal realizes Alec Connell is too good to be happy sitting and watching every game, so they trade him.

The Habs pick up another first round draft pick for their “backup” who they signed this offseason. Connell is easily the best goalie in Detroit now. He will take over for Lorne Chabot, who has struggled these past 2 seasons. Connell ended up playing just that one game for Montreal.

In late February, Frank Boucher tore a calf muscle that ends his season. Without Howie Morenz, Montreal counted on Boucher as their top center, and he delivered a point a game for 38 games. Just intime though, Morenz returned to the lineup a few days prior to the injury. Montreal fell from first to 3rd without Howie, but should fair better with him in the lineup.

Here are the final standings

The Black Hawks are slowly getting better. 1st overall pick Toe Blake played on the third line and finished with 16 points in 28 games. Red Horner had a healthy season on the blue line. Another top draft pick will give the team a 3rd building block, and the future actually looks bright.

Alec Connell played 8 games in Detroit after the trade. His results were not great, going 2-5-1 with a 3.47 GAA and a .899 save percentage, but the Falcons are in the playoffs, so Connell may have a point to prove!

George Hainsworth played in every game for the Americans, finishing 20-21-6, with a 2.32 GAA and a .917 save percentage. I have no doubt that without him, the Americans would have been a last place team.

1932 NHL Playoffs

Round 1

Both series went to a deciding third game. Alec Connell out-dueled George Hainsworth and the Habs avoided disaster with a 3 goal third period in the deciding game to advance.

Round 2

The Montreal Maroons really shut down the defending champion Rangers. In 3 games, they allow just three goals, completing a fairly easy sweep.

Alec Connell stopped 48 shots in a surprising 2-1 overtime in game one, giving Detroit a very real shot at upsetting the Habs. After game 1 though, nothing he could have done mattered. Tiny Thompson allowed just one more goal in the next 3 games, all Habs wins.

It’s an all Montreal finals. The traditional French backed Canadiens vs the English supported Maroons. The Canadiens will continue to be without Frank Boucher, but they did get here without him. Both teams defense and goaltending has been excellent in the playoffs. Can we expect a low scoring best of three series?

Game 1

Cooney Weiland and Hooley Smith scored 90 seconds apart in the 2nd to give the Maroons a 2-0 lead. After making it a 1 goal game early in the third, Howie Morenz tied the game with his 5th of the post season. The Maroons responded right away. Joe Primeau converted a Art Coulter pass for the eventual game winning goal. The Maroons win game one, 4-2.

Game 2

Joe Primeau scored an early opening goal. Cooney Weiland made it 2-0, and the Maroons were off to the races. It was 3-0 before Howie Morenz finally scored, but that was all the Canadiens were gonna get. Two third period goals for the Maroons sealed the victory. 5-1 Maroons, and they sweep the series!

1932 NHL Offseason

Eddie Shore takes home his 3rd Hart Trophy.

Charlie Gardiner wins his third straight Vezina Trophy as the leagues best goalie. I’ve talked about Tiny Thompson, Alec Connell, George Hainsworth, but have given very little time to Gardiner. Well, Gardiner is obviously the leagues best goalie right now. Those Vezina’s and 3 cup rings prove it! Here are the 1932 award winners.

Here are the league all-stars for the season

Maroons all over the place!! 6 members of the team get all-star honors!

After a year absence, the Senators rejoin the league. They don’t have any players anymore though. They will be starting from scratch. I’m gonna take an educated guess and say this isn’t gonna go to well or last too long….

With Ottawa returning to the league, the NHL has awarded them the first overall pick in the draft.

They select 18 year old netminder Turk Broda. He looks like a fantastic pick, who one day should be an elite goalie. Problem is he’s an 18 year old, and Ottawa will have no talent. He needs to grow up really fast!

The Chicago Black Hawks make a move that shows us why they are at the bottom of the league.

A year removed from being the first overall draft pick, Gordie Drillon is moved to Detroit for two journeymen. Drillon was part of a nice young core that included Red Horner, Earl Seibert, Toe Blake and Sweeney Schriner. In a few years, that group could do some damage. Drillon looked like the best potential forward in the group. Looking at the Chicago depth chart, Callighen slots in as the number 11 defenseman, and Gordon as the #5 winger. Dumb.

Boston trades their 1st round pick for a goalie.

This is a great move by the Bruins. Their goaltending wasn’t great, but with Lorne Chabot, they very well could be the best team in the American division. With Eddie Shore and Babe Siebert, the Bruins now have a real shot of playing in the Stanley Cup.

1932-33 NHL Regular Season

The Senators are awful. They lose their first 18 games of the season, and I'm not sure they will win a game this year. 18 year old Turk Broda has been thrown to the wolves. He’s actually playing well. In 11 games, he’s 0-10, with a 4.21 GAA, but a excellent .926 save percentage! The teams leading scorer, Leo Murray, has 4 points in 17 games. FHM is not setup for early 1900 expansion. The Sens have no talent at all.

After 20 straight losses, the Ottawa Senators finally played a game they didn’t lose.

After 60 minutes, the Senators tied the Montreal Canadiens 1-1! It isn’t a win, but it isn’t a loss. Carson Cooper’s first goal of the season opened the scoring. Ottawa held the lead for a full period until Red Beattie tied it for the Habs. Montreal outshot Ottawa 56-7. How Sens goalie Andy Aitkenhead didn’t receive a star is ridiculous.

In the offseason post, I made comments about the Black Hawks being bad and stupid, and Boston being on the brink cuz of some smart moves. Well….I’m an idiot. With two months to play, here are the standings in the American Division. Ya, im definitely an idiot.

They did it. On February 23rd, the Senators beat the Leafs 4-2, winning their first game of the season. Trailing 2-1 entering the third, Ottawa got 3 goals from players ive never heard of. Laurie Scott, former Maple Leaf got 2 assists, in probably the best moment of his post Toronto career!

Here are the final standings

The top 3 in the Canadian division are separated by just one point.

Chicago finishes first. Boston finishes last. Just like with the Maroons, my predictions are ridiculous.

Lorne Chabot played 25 games for the last place Bruins, winning 7 times. His .904 save percentage was not good. 22 year old Wilf Cude played 23 games in Boston, winning 11 times, recording the lowest GAA in the whole league, and posting a .932 save percentage. So far, that trade was a mistake!

Gordie Drillon played 20 games in Detroit, getting 8 points. Even though Chicago won their division, they got nothing for Drillon, who showed at 19 he can play!

1933 NHL Playoffs

The first round is a best of three this year.

The Rangers beat Montreal in OT, then need two 3rd period goals, but it’s enough to edge the Habs 2-0. After getting upset in the opening game, the Maroons crush Detroit in game 2, then shut down the Wings in game 3 too advance.

2nd Round is a best of five.

A dominant performance from the Americans in round 2. They hold the Black Hawks to just one goal in a 3 games sweep. The Americans make their first Stanley Cup in 7 years. George Hainsworth, now 39, recorded the back to back shutouts.

After a first game blowout, I assumed the series would be a cakewalk for the Maroons. The Rangers didn’t agree and responded with back to back wins. Montreal forced a game 5, but the Rangers defense did the job. New York eliminates the defending champs, and advance to the Stanley Cup!

One year after our first same city championship, we get another one. The battle of New York is here. The Rangers take on the Americans. It’s a great matchup. Two of the best goal scorers in hockey are pitted against each other. Aurel Joliat vs Charlie Conacher.

Game 1

The Stanley Cup is a best of 3 this season. Lorne Carr opens the scoring with the first shot on net, his 2nd of the playoffs and the Americans lead 1-0. They strike 3 times in 8 minutes in the 2nd, shell shocking the Rangers. George Hainsworth then shut the door the rest of the way. The Americans win the opener in impressive fashion 4-0!

Game 2

Charlie Conacher gets the Rangers their first goal of the final, which gives them a first period lead. The lead is extended to 2-0 with a Eddie Wiseman power play goal in the 2nd. The teams exchange goals in the third, but that’s enough to force a third and deciding game. The Rangers win game two, 3-1.

Game 3

The Rangers come out of the gates on fire. They record the first 6 shots of the game, the sixth finding mesh. Bill Thoms is the goal scorer. 1-0 Rangers. The Americans respond and start controlling the play, but a Tom Anderson point shot eludes Hainsworth, and they find themselves down 2-0 halfway through the game.

Herbie Lewis scores a huge goal in the dying seconds of the 2nd to cut the lead to one. Burr Williams finds himself on a two on one. He feeds Gene Carrigan who buries a one timer to tie this game at 2!!

Off a offensive zone draw, Charlie Conacher kicks the puck to Bun Cook, who beats George Hainsworth through the legs, and the Rangers grab the lead back. The Americans aren’t done though. Aurel Joliat lets a slap shot go that is deflected by Syd Howe. Goal! 3-3 with 3 minutes left.

Overtime

Halfway through the period. Tom Anderson gets 3 whacks at the puck infront of the net. Hainsworth stops them all, but the puck trickles to Eddie Wiseman, who finds a way to score! GOAL! The Rangers win the Stanley Cup!!!

Eddie Wiseman, Rangers OT Hero!
