I hate that you beat me to this. I would have picked the 2010 version, though, to get Beltre and Victor Martinez.

This is actually a tough debate as a Sox fan. Would you take the 2010 or 2011 version of the team?

The argument for 2010:
- Adrian Beltre at 3B, in Beast Mode
- Kevin Youkilis at 1B, his better defensive position
- JD Drew before he fell off the cliff in RF (he sucked in 2011)
- Injuries were the main cause of the historical team's collapse, so you have a decent shot at full seasons from Ellsbury, Pedroia, Cameron, and maybe even Jed Lowrie

The argument for 2011:
- Adrian Gonzalez at 1B, and he had an excellent season
- Marco Scutaro had a better year at SS
- A better season from David Ortiz at DH
- A natural replacement for JD Drew's corpse in Josh Reddick
- This time, the injuries smashed the pitching staff, so potentially full seasons from all of Beckett, Lester, and Buchholz could be huge
- A pretty solid bullpen with some depth, between Papelbon, Bard, Aceves, Morales, and Atchison

Ultimately, I suppose I agree with picking the 2011 team. I just have an emotional attachment to the 2010 squad, because Beltre and Martinez just added a certain 2003-2005 style personality to the team that I enjoyed. Injury settings would play a huge role in the final outcome of this simulation, though.

That's a good point. I'll ban 1994 teams due to the fact there was no postseason

1980 Baltimore Orioles

They won 100 games that year didn't win the division.

I would add a 22 yr old Cal Ripken
and 26 yr old Frank Robinson

2001 Cardinals:

Ozzie Smith and John Tudor from the '85 Cardinals. They were good enough not to need Hornsby, Stan The Man, Diz, Brock, Gibby, etc. Those two could have put 'em over the top.

Can I use more players if my time machine is bigger on the inside?

Frank Robinson was in Cincinnati in 62. It has to be a year that they played with your team. Otherwise it will cause ripples in the time machine vortex

Ah, good call. Ok I'm going to stick with Frank… he'll be a bit older at 30. So that would be the 66 Frank, he's first season in Bmore.

Upon further reflection, I have a completely different Red Sox team to nominate.

1978 Red Sox

2010 Adrian Beltre - Butch Hobson's power masked a below average overall rate of production and the most horrifying defense at 3B possible. Beltre would have made that team unstoppable by himself, from the offense and defensive upgrade.

2000 Pedro Martinez - Duh

Special Exception - 2004 Terry Francona. Don Zimmer cost this team wins with stupid decisions with not resting players, and with the pitching staff. Francona would have actually used Bill Lee in the rotation, and Pedro-Eck-Tiant-Lee in any order would have dominated, especially with the upgraded defense behind them.

A 99-win team that lost a 1-game playoff is arguably the best non-playoff team in Red Sox history.

1969 Detroit Tigers

1987 Alan Trammell
2013 Miguel Cabrera

Oh and if this team is chosen, please make sure they play in God's stadium and not that bank sponsored monstrosity of today.

A Yankee team has been taken. I'm going to limit the selection to one per franchise for simplicity. Feel free to pick another team though! I'll likely do another season after this too so keep those Yanks on the back burner

The 2006 Phillies + 1972 Steve Carlton and 1974 Mike Schmidt.

Hard to decide between Mike Schmidt and an additional pitcher (probably Cliff Lee in 2011) because David Bell wasn't terrible in 2006, but a top of the lineup going Rollins, Utley, Schmidt, and prime Howard is too deadly.

1979 Houston Astros.
Add 1994 Jeff Bagwell and 1997 Craig Biggio.

Was tempted to add 1986 Mike Scott in place of Biggio, but those '79 Astros had enough pitching. Finished 1 1/2 games out and had a 10-game lead in July. Hit only 49 HRs for the season, one more than Dave Kingman (48) that year.

The reason I went with 2011 Red Sox over 2010 is that they fit better with my player choices, in terms of WAR being replaced by the added players.

Williams adds 10.1 wins to the 2011 Red Sox, and Pedro adds 13.6 wins, when you consider that Carl Crawford and John Lackey are no longer in the lineup/rotation. (I used bWAR for that calculation. Also, since Williams had more plate appearances than Crawford, Josh Reddick loses 58 PA and J.D. Drew loses 9 PA.)

Ok, then...

2005 Cleveland Indians

1953 Al Rosen
1972 Gaylord Perry

What? Bob Feller got left off the team? Dang right he did!
