If I put a player on the expanded roster in september, am I using up one of his option years?

I believe If you place a player with a minor league contract on the expanded roster he is upgraded to a major league contract and option years are initiated. If you send him back to the minors he officially starts one of his 3 (by default) option years. So yes, if you call someone up from the minors, even on the expanded roster, and then put him back in the minors he is using one of his option years.

As above, yes. One additional note: If he was already on your 40 man you used one of his option years when the season started so it's not a big deal to call him up in that case.

Did a player use up an option year in the season just concluded? This is an easy question to answer:
If the player was on the 40-man roster and spent even just one day playing for a minor league club during the season, then yes he's used up an option year. (Note that in real life the threshold is 20 days playing for a minor league club during the season. So real world clubs have a bit more flexibility in this area than OOTP GMs do.) |

I may be confused here, but I read your question this way... If you take a player that was not on the secondary roster at September 1 and add him to the secondary AND ACTIVE (expanded) roster playing in the majors, then he does NOT use an option year (unless you demote him). |
