More coach types at MLB Level & "Roving instructors"

I noticed that several personnel who are 1st/3rd Base coaches are floating as available personnel in the game, and thought about a good improvement for OOTP 21.

tl;dr why no base coaches and roving instructors? hardly any good staff with decent coaching baserunning/fielding stats, adding those positions and real world personnel to game can fix it.

***The actual serious (long-winded) post.
One thing that stuck me, was knowing that several coaches are either not with their teams, or simply don't exist within the game, despite base coaches being an integral part of the game, especially when it comes to 3rd base coaches sending runners home or holding them up. This is glaringly obvious in the case of overly cautious 3rd base coaches, whom might cost a team runs that never happen holding up runners with less than 2 outs. (I'm looking at you Ed Sedar.)

I was thinking also how they impact the development of baserunning/fielding/hitting roles within the teams. For example, many times if a team doesn't have a specialist coach dedicated to working with fielders (Willie Randolph was hired by the Brewers about a decade ago specifically to work with infielders, but also as an additional knowledgeable staff member) would work with fielding/baserunning that isn't always clear to fans.

The benefit of a "roving hitting/fielding/baserunning instructor" for the entire minor league system is a thing that is also used by many clubs seeing the benefit of one or several experienced coaches to work with prospects on various aspects of their game, while not being tied down to one minor league affiliate.

Even if OOTP Dev team isn't keen on the concept of having them directly impact the baserunning mechanics of the game, the number of personnel who are skilled at teaching baserunning/fielding is a massive glaring hole in the game that adding base coaches/minor league instructor slots could really improve and add a bit more realism to the game with.

Also, enabling the player to set their own character's stats when an actual manager would be a good idea too. Might be a negative effect that shouldn't exist if there's no boost to player development by being the manager.

Base coaches have been suggested in the past, but the overwhelming consensus is that the hiring process for coaching staffs is tedious enough as it is without adding more positions. So I think they'd have to take a good look at fixing that process first before giving us more positions to hire. If you add base coaches for the MLB team, then you probably have to add them for all teams, which means two more coaches per team in your system. That's a lot of coaches to hire when most people already despise the process of hiring the coaches we already have in the game.

Not saying your suggestion is bad one. Just that some other things need to be looked at first.

I would like to see more coaches as well. Base Coaches, perhaps even assistant hitting and pitching coaches as way to get coaches experience. The additional coaches would only be for the major leagues, and could be optional. In the minor leagues most teams do not have base coaches. They usually have a hitting coach and a pitching coach. They may have one other coach they use to coach third, or they may have the hitting coach as 3rd base coach. They often just use a player on the team for coaching 1st.

To add to the coach issue, in reality, when a Manager is canned, usually most of his coaching staff goes with it.

I'd like for coaches to be fired with Managers. So an entire new staff is brought in.

Also, i HATE seeing batters become pitching coaches and vice versa. The "Bench coach" position allows for this mixup. I have to constantly go through teams and fire coaches who don't make sense. Today i noticed the Reds hired Vince Coleman as pitching coach. Had to fire him. Poor fella

I meant that you'd have to add them to the minors in OOTP so that MLB and minor league games aren't coded differently. The original post here talks about how base coaches help teams with development in certain areas. If those personnel aren't in use at all levels, then development would need to be coded differently between the levels that use them and the levels that don't. That would require a lot of work.

Of course, if the base coaches don't have that development effect, then it doesn't matter. But then I'd ask what's the point if they don't help their teams develop in any way?

I have been arguing for 1b/3b coaches for seems like 10 years. Add me as a +1 to this.

I don't see why having 2-3 staff potions (base coaches and a roving instructor that gives a boost to minor league teams overall) would mean requiring having base coaches for minor league teams.

The benefit of the coaching rating stats isnt very clear other than its implied, higher is better. I'd really like perhaps the training manual actually give a bit more info of how the coaching stats really work other than implying it.

The idea would be the base coaches would simply execute manager's philosophy and then give the training rating bonuses applied, as stated allowing more specialization of the coaching staff is a good thing.

This would be a good first step to adding them into the game without them (at least for the first year as staff members) altering the in game simulation, and allow OOTP dev team to work them into the game to the way they impact baserunning decisions later.

The roving instructor I mentioned can be used to apply bonuses for training and covers the issue of foreign clubs as well as fills a real world role that many clubs utilize (former reputable players of the club being hired on to pass on knowledge to other/younger players).

It'd be a more realistic simulation with only 3 staff added per ML club and not requiring massive expansion and research to do. One could also have it so the "roving instructor" is an optional position to be filled, but also their effectiveness would be boosted with a higher "development budget".

I don't see the need to be adding the base coaches for non ML teams, especially given in some scenarios they are not full-time staff and even filled via players in some parts of the world much like at the youth level is in the US/elsewhere.

I agree base coaches would not need to be added to the minors, and only added to the majors. The lower minors often use players to coach at least one of the bases usually 1B.
