I also brought in Rene Arocha (arochre01) at an earlier age because I feel he was screwed over by U.S./Cuban relations at the time, which was not his fault. He also probably risked his life to get to the U.S., so it's the least I can do. Arocha will go two picks above Brown in the 3rd round. The Phillies have 5 of the top 26 picks, while the Pirates have 4 of the top 27 picks (including the number one overall pick, which I'll hold back as a surprise [until I post the list of first rounders], but he was really, really good ). Devon Travis is in this draft, and I'll be following his career with great interest.

Going to have to do some research on Rene Arocha, Travis is constant disappointment to me IRL short flashes of brilliance followed by very long periods of, at best, mediocrity.

Arocha was in the big leagues for a short period of time, mostly thanks to the fact that he was a 29-year old rookie, which is thanks to the whole US/Cuba thing. I brought him in at 18 to see what might've been. I'll do likewise for other Cubans, as well as guys like Ichiro, Hideki Matsui, Nomo etc, KBO guys that played in the big leagues and Negro Leaguers who showed up later than they would've had they been given a fair shake, like Paige, Jackie, Campy etc.

Should be conducting the dispersal (draft) later today. Will post first round results (as per usual). In the e-mail that you get every year announcing the draft, neither of the two RL HoFers were listed in the list of ten draftees expected to go in the early rounds. Whoo boy!

1st Round of the 1904 Amateur Draft with player ages as of June 30, 1905, as well as all positions that they are rated at:

1. Pittsburgh Pirates: Tom Glavine, 20, LHP
2. New York Highlanders: Stan Hack, 21, 3B
3. Boston Beaneaters: Roger Bresnahan, 18, C/CF/RF
4. Philadelphia Athletics: Brian Jordan, 24, LF/CF/RF
5. Boston Americans: George Grantham, 21, 1B/2B
6. Philadelphia Phillies: Mickey Vernon, 20, 1B
7. Chicago White Sox: Josh Johnson, 20, RHP
8. New York Giants: Dave Cash, 20, 2B
9. Philadelphia Phillies: Darryl Kile, 21, RHP
10. St. Louis Cardinals: Jim Landis, 22, CF/RF
11. Pittsburgh Pirates: Bill Hoffer, 23, RHP/LF/CF
12. Cleveland Naps: Welington Castillo, 22, C
13. Cincinnati Reds: Kirk Rueter, 21, LHP
14. New York Giants: Hank Majeski, 21, 3B
15. Cincinnati Reds: Frank Isbell, 21, 1B/2B
16. Detroit Tigers: Whitey Lockman, 17, 1B/LF/CF

The state of Pennsylvania was well represented at the 1904 MLB Amateur Draft table. At least, two teams in the state of Pennsylvania, although the Athletics did manage to secure the services of LF/CF/RF Brian Jordan.

The Pirates had seven picks in the draft (including first overall pick LHP Tom Glavine), and did extremely well with them. In addition to Glavine, they picked up RHP/LF/CF Bill Hoffer, LHP Scott Karl, RHP Rocky Stone, and SS Phil Lewis as well as a couple of organizational filler pieces (LF/CF/RFs Otis Clymer and Andrew Stevenson). The Phillies managed to get 1B Mickey Vernon, RHP Darryl Kile, 2B Devon Travis, C Mark Bailey along with some filler in LF/CF/RF Shosei Go (Spritze *** player), C George Armstrong, RHP Jim Brenneman, 1B Paul Carey, and 2B/CF Gracie Pierce.

I think we'll be hearing from these two teams before too long. The Cubs had a huge haul in the 1903 draft and improved from 76 wins in 1903 to 97 wins in 1904 (+21).

The draft is sooo critical to a team's success, yet some teams piss away their picks by signing free agents. Might work short term, but long term it might not be the best strategy. The Cubs and Browns went on a bit of a free agent spree, and paid for it at this years draft table. The Cubs were only able to grab a couple of filler pieces in RHP Andres Machado, and C/1B Don Gile, while the Browns picked up LF Tony Torcato, LHP Daniel Schlereth, and LHP Ryan Feierabend. Ugh. The Cubs and Browns are doing very well right now, but how will their 1904 drafts impact them down the road? We shall see.

1904 Season/Postseason Recap:

Regular Season:

1904 continued the trend of a reasonably balanced league. It appears my efforts to seek out some degree of sanity in this league are bearing fruit, even if they are somewhat control freakish in nature. What the hey, we all have our little OCD ticks right? Right? In the first four seasons of this modest little random debut league three teams have exceeded 100 wins (the 1901 Boston Beaneaters [104-58], the 1902 Brooklyn Superbas [101-61], and the 1904 St. Louis Browns [100-62]), while four teams have exceeded 100 losses (the 1902 Cleveland Bronchos [60-102], the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates [60-102], the 1903 Chicago White Sox [61-101], and the 1904 Pittsburgh [59-103] - For goodness sake Buccos...Clean it up!). Very small sample size, but that's pretty much what I was aiming for when I began this journey.

Chicago was the place to be if you love to watch large improvements in teams from one year to the next. The Cubs improved by 21 wins in 1904 (zooming from 76 to 97 wins and 1st place [and home field advantage in the LCS] in the National League), while the White Sox improved by 18 wins (up from 61 wins to 79 wins), and demonstrated why they may soon be a force to be reckoned with. There was much gnashing of teeth in Cleveland, New York, and Pittsburgh, as the Naps dropped by 10 (90 to 80), the Highlanders dropped by 14 (82 to 68 - but don't feel too sorry for them - they've managed to sign a couple of former Walter Johnson Award winners in this year's free agent frenzy in Madison Bumgarner and Jacob deGrom - I think they'll be just fine, thank you), while the Pirates managed to drop by 11 wins somehow (from 70 to 59). Ugh.

The Cubs managed to hold off the Superbas (who've now been to the postseason each of the last three seasons), and squeaked by to claim home field advantage for the LCS. In the AL, the Browns lapped the field, and held a 13-8 edge over the Tigers in the season series. In the NL it was much tighter, as the Superbas held a 13-11 edge against the Cubs in the regular season (N.B.: Because I use strict three game series in my league, sometimes teams will face each other 24 times, and sometimes it'll be 21...one of the pitfalls of scheduling the way I like to schedule...Them's the breaks).

ALCS:

Game 1: St. Louis 4, Detroit 3, W: Toad Ramsey (1-0), L: Eppa Rixey (0-1), SV: Oscar Harstad (1), HR: DET: Dan Gladden (1)

The Tigers got things going in the top of the fifth, as 1B Kevin Jordan singled home 2B Lou Bierbauer for a 1-0 lead. It was very short lived though, as 1B Chuck Hinton tripled home C Robinson Chirinos, and scored on a groundout by LF Bobby Mitchell in the bottom of the fifth. The next inning CF Rick Monday doubled home RF Sam Crawford and 2B Cupid Childs to put the Browns up 4-1. To their credit, the Tigers fought back in the top of the seventh on a two-run HR by DH Dan Gladden, but that was as close as they would get. Getting three runs off Toad Ramsey is quite the accomplishment, but it wasn't enough on this day, as Ramsey went the first seven, and Harstad finished up with 2 hitless innings for the save.

Game 2: St. Louis 5, Detroit 4, W: Bill Landrum (1-0), L: Bob Logan (0-1), HR: None

Again the Tigers got the jump on the Browns. This time in the top of the third on an RBI single from LF Lefty O'Doul, and a 2-run double by C Craig Biggio. Brett Tomko bobbed and weaved his way through 6 shutout innings, but faltered in the 7th. SS Chris Speier doubled home LF Alphonso Gerard, and scored on a single by Cupid Childs. The Tigers added an insurance run in the ninth to make it 4-2 on back to back two out doubles by Lou Bierbauer and SS Trevor Story. CL Liam Hendriks had been great all season long, and had a 1-2-3 eighth inning, but the ninth was a different story. 3B J C Martin and Alphonso Gerard singled and doubled respectively. That brought on Bob Logan, who yielded a Chris Speier 2-run double on a 2-0 pitch to tie the game at 4. Cupid Childs was then intentionally walked to set up a double play. But Chuck Hinton refused to co-operate and hit a flyball to RF, which allowed Speier to get to third. On a Rick Monday groundball, the Tigers attempted to get Speier at home, but he was ruled safe, and the Browns had a 2-0 series lead heading to Tigertown.

Game 3: St. Louis 11, Detroit 7, W: Oscar Harstad (1-0), L: Liam Hendriks (0-1), HR: SLA: Rick Monday (1), Bobby Mitchell (1)

What a wild and wooly one at Bennett Park in Detroit. Right from the 1st inning at was clear this was going to be a crazy game, as Rick Monday's 1st inning grand slam off Tigers' SP Luke Walker held up for oh, a half an inning. The Tigers roared back to score five in the bottom of the first against Browns' SP Phil Knell. SS Alphonso Gerard (he gets around - a bit of a utility player) made an error to start the inning off and it was all downhill from there. A Trevor Story sac fly got the scoring started. Then consecutive RBI singles by Lou Bierbauer and Dan Gladden, and a two-run double from Kevin Jordan gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead...After one inning. A two-run single by Alphonso Gerard gave the Browns the lead back in the fourth inning, and two innings later Gerard was at it again with a single to score Bobby Mitchell, making it 7-5. In the bottom of the seventh Trevor Story's 2-run single evened it up at 7. The ninth inning would prove to be the Tigers undoing again though as Jerry Denny's error mixed in with an RBI single by Chuck Hinton and a three-run bomb from Bobby Mitchell put the nail in the Tigers' coffin (for this game anyway). Harstad faced the top of the Tigers' order in the bottom of the ninth allowing a two-out single to Craig Biggio, but Trevor Story flied out to end the madness. Detroit was in a deep hole now.

Game 4: St. Louis 6, Detroit 3, W: Bronson Arroyo (1-0), L: Chase Anderson (0-1), SV: Oscar Harstad (2), HR: SLA: Bobby Mitchell (2), Cupid Childs (1), DET: Craig Biggio (1)

A first inning three-run shot by Bobby Mitchell staggered the Tigers. This was not the kind of start they were looking for in such an important game. A third inning RBI single by Rick Monday, a fourth inning solo jack by Cupid Childs (a guy with 19 lifetime HR in four seasons - Ouch!), and a fifth inning RBI single by J C Martin sent the Motor City fans scurrying for the exits, not wanting to witness the celebration that was to come for the wrong team. A sixth inning RBI single for Craig Biggio, and his two-run HR two innings later made the final score look respectable, but let's face it, it just put lipstick on this pig. The Tigers had fought hard during this series, but every single time they fought back St. Louis had an answer for them, and in the end the Browns were too much.

Series MVP: St. Louis Browns CF Rick Monday: .353/.421/.588, with 1 HR and 8 RBI in just 4 games

Interesting this morning, I had both Dwight Gooden and Walter Johnson suffer career ending injuries in their rookie seasons with in a week of each other; now do bring them back with a miraculous surgery?

I lost Koufax just before he hit his RL insanely dominant stretch in my OOTP16 game. It hurts but I went with it because baseball is a game where somebody else will always fill the vacuum. That being said it is your game so you should do what you want to do.

Also, if you haven't done so already, edit those pesky CEIs out of your injuries.txt file in your database folder. Better yet, I'll upload mine, so you don't have to mess around with it. It will not completely eliminate CEIs, but it will drastically reduce them. You will still get CEIs due to injury setbacks, it'll just be about one a season across your league (as long as it's a reasonably sized league - if there are like 600 teams or something, there will be more). Copy this file to your database folder (copy over the original in the database folder), and keep a copy elsewhere, so that you can overwrite it when it switches back when you patch up with the latest patch. I keep mine in a folder called modified database or something like that.

1904 Season/Postseason Recap:

Design decision. From now on, I will post the series summary and the boxscore of the deciding game, as I've been getting slowed down a bit with these recaps, and I'm probably spending more time on them than the stuff I enjoy more. I may follow the series of the player named MVP, as well as the player from the losing side, who could've been named MVP had things turned out better for his side (unless of course the MVP comes from the losing team, in that case I'll look at someone on the victorious side).

NLCS:

The Cubs pitching and defense completely shut down the Superbas in this series, outscoring them 13-7. When Bobby Knoop and Mario Mendoza are the only ones getting on base consistently for you, you're in trouble. Mike Donlin could only come up with three hits, while Juan Centeno was held hitless for the series. Nobody really stood out for the Superbas, but that'll happen in a sweep.

Chase d'Arnaud emerged as the star of the series for the Cubs, grabbing MVP honours. The ageless (40 years old) wonder Julio Franco and 33-year old Roy White also chipped in, but d'Arnaud was clearly the star. He got things going in Game 1 singling and scoring a run in the third, and closed out the scoring for the Cubs with an RBI single to score Everth Cabrera with an important insurance run in the eighth. Game 2 saw him triple in two off Mickey Lolich to get the Cubs on the board in the second, and he walked and came around with the tying run on a two-run single by John Vander Wal in the seventh. Game 3 saw him go 0 for 2 with a walk, but the rest of the team picked him up with a 3-run 1st inning, and then hung on for a 3-2 win. d'Arnaud was definitely the star of the deciding game, doubling home Muddy Ruel in the seventh, and tripled home Ruel in the ninth for all the runs the Cubs would score in a 2-0 victory, as SP Al Orth came up with the "Maddux", a CG shutout with fewer than 100 pitches (98) to seal the deal for the Cubs.

1904 Season/Postseason Recap:

World Series:

Any number of players could've been named MVP of this series, but all of them would be hitters. Julio Franco, Alex Rodriguez, and Tommy Brown stood out for the Cubs, while Rick Monday, Chuck Hinton, and Robinson Chirinos stood out for the Browns. In the end, it was the old man of the sextet that emerged with the hardware. Franco hit .478/.478/.652 for the series with 1 HR and 6 RBI and he did it out of the #8 spot in St. Louis, and the #7 slot in Chicago (pitcher hitting ninth behind Franco and d'Arnaud).

In Game 1 a three-run shot by Tommy Brown in the top of the first got the Cubs off on the right foot, and Julio Franco broke up the tie in the top of the seventh with a two-run shot of his own (off Toad Ramsey no less). Game 2 saw the Cubs only able to muster a couple of runs off Alex Fernandez on homers by Alex Rodriguez and John Vander Wal.

In Game 3, Franco would hit a huge 2-run single in the bottom of the 7th to erase a one run deficit, and give the Cubs a 4-3 lead. Closer Eric Wilkins shut it down the rest of the way to give the Cubs a 2-1 series lead. Game 4 was a 9-3 blowout for the Cubs. Julio Franco was in the middle of the 3-run rally in the bottom of the 4th. He singled home Laynce Nix with the tying run, and then scored the go ahead run on a sac fly by SP Al Orth. A 4-run 8th inning rally put the game out of reach. Franco reached on a fielder's choice, and scored on a 2-run double by Roy White. Game 5 was a wild one as the Browns sent thirteen men to the plate in the top of the first, and scored 9. Toad Ramsey wasn't very good, but he didn't have to be. Franco had four singles, one of which got the score back to 11-8 in the bottom of the seventh. The Cubs showed a lot of fight, but it wasn't enough in an 11-9 defeat. The Browns had managed to get it back to their home turf for Game 6.

Game 6 would see Franco double in the third inning and score on a single by Everth Cabrera to help the Cubs break out on top. They would never trail after that, as they won a 3-2 nailbiter to clinch the series. The Cubs had completed a remarkable turn around having gone from 6th place, 19 games out in 1903 to world champs in 1904.

The first half of 1905 is pretty much in the can (79 games in: time to pick All-Stars before the AI does it). The big story is Honus Wagner's hitting streak...51 games!!! It started on April 21st in a 2-1 loss to the Cardinals, and ended on June 18th in a 1-0 loss to Cincinnati. At the beginning of the streak his seasonal slash line was .333/.432/.460/.893, and through the day before it ended it had jumped to .410/.480/.643/1.123. If he can keep it up, he may be able to dislodge Mike Donlin's grip on the Babe Ruth Award. Donlin hasn't exactly been chopped liver this year, as he's currently hitting .332/.384/.587/.971 with 56 R, 18 2B, 19 HR and 59 RBI.

Most importantly, Wagner's Giants sit in 1st place in the NL with a 46-33 record. The Phillies, Cubs, Superbas, and Beaneaters are all within five games of the Giants, so they're going to have to keep this up if they want to get to the postseason for the first time in franchise history. The White Sox are absolutely destroying the field in the American League with a 54-25 record. The Browns and Tigers are the only other teams in the AL with a .500 or better record, so unless the White Sox completely fall apart, they should be in the postseason for their first time, and they should get there with the home field advantage. But just remember, baseball can and does happen, so you never know.

EDIT: Just noticed the White Sox are 20-4 in one run games, so I don't think they're home and cooled yet. Could be a bit of a correction coming.

Upgrade the injury file but decided only going forward no retroactive move for Johnson and Gooden, my league, my rules. It would drive me to the point of insanity, not a long trip, knowing that in the background!

Oof! So Johnson and Gooden are no more? Ouch. At least you should get some protection going forward with my file. Still stings though.

For the second All-Star Game in a row, the pitching in MLB was on display, as the AL narrowly edged the NL 2-1. Dale Murphy was named the player of the game, despite being on the losing side. Murphy clocked a solo shot off Bucky Walters in the sixth inning to briefly tie the game at one.

The NL was only able to get 2 hits total in the game off AL pitching, as the AL pitchers completely smothered the NL bats, also allowing 0 BB, with 9 K. The National League only stranded one baserunner.

For the AL, a solo shot by Jim Bottomley with two out in the bottom of the sixth gave them back the one run lead that they would never relinquish. I would say Jim Bottomley deserved player of the game honours, but what do I know? The three stars were Murphy, Frank Welch, and Bottomley. Whatever. CF Ben Chapman had singled home LF Frank Welch to give the AL their original lead in the bottom of the third.

Great game if you like great pitching and defense. If you dig the high scoring games, not so much. All-time the AL leads the NL 3 games to 2 in All-Star Game history.
