Playing with 2D backgrounds in 3d models. Please let me know thoughts or ideas

So I have been toying with how to get backgrounds using google earth images. basically I just set up a big wall in sketch up and piece together two or three images taken from google earth.

The jury is out on how it looks. I don't think I'm getting the right angle or distance for the scale. can anyone offer help or suggestions?

Here are some pics of Rickwood field and Labatt Park (from the location it was supposed to be built

I think it looks good enough. It definitely solves the problem of the stadiums looking like they're floating in mid-air.

Looks much better than the current 3D parks IMO.

The part I just can't get past however is the crowd textures.

It's obviously not ideal, but if every person in the crowd was its own 3D model, I would think the file sizes of the stadiums would be huge

Silvam,

Do the 2d backgrounds increase the file size much? They look great by the way.

By the way, how did you make those backgrounds?

it's not you per say silva...the crowd included in the stock MLB parks within OOTP 17 have the same look....it just doesn't look very authentic. I just figured there would be a way to make it look realistic without having each crowd member have it's own 3d file.

can the same 2d be done for the MLB ballparks? I really do think it looks much better. I get the field and fence being 3d...but the backdrop ballpark images may look better in 2d actually.

Very promising. A lot of fictional potential here, too.

Google earth. It's free. Anyone can get it and save image files from it. Then splice them
Together to make what I did.

Would make a terrific project for someone who isn't building stadiums, haha

I like the idea of using google earth for the background of where the park actually is. Makes it even more real. Nice move there.

Well, not my idea. I was messaging Jorin from OOTP Who is the 3D guru and he mentioned it.

Again Silvam thanks for all your terrific work on these ballparks. I think the backgrounds make a real difference.
