XML Error

I've already posted about this in other spots, but seriously, I do not understand my issue.

I continue to tweak it little by little, and a slightly different line for the error pops up every time. I'm using TextEdit to edit the XML, by the way.

Can't see your line numbers, so can't reply to your specific problem; however, you can try a program called EditX. It may help you. There's a free version.

I don't have line numbers on text edit, but I've been going by the first phrase that pops up in the error.

Never coded before, this is making my head spin. But opened the application, and right off the bat I'm hit with this:

I'll try to figure things out tonight.

Turn off "smart quotes." That's the cause of most of these XML errors.

after the <STATE> entry, you have to open the city group with <CITIES>, then the next line can be the individual <CITY... entries (see 106330 and 106331 for an example). The last entry will be </CITIES> to close the group when you have entered all the cities for that state.

side note: 106332 and 106341 looks like it has an extra /> after the closing </CITIES> entry.

Don't know if you use OpenOffice (or Excel), but here's a template someone (kq?) made that might be helpful. You fill in your info and paste it into your xml file. It can help with some of those formatting errors.

The errors I get seem to be with the tags and end-tags, rather than the actual content. No idea why. I have the same exact format throughout the edit, but some parts are alright while others are not.

The element type "STATES" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "</STATES>".

If you're referring to your example, the closing tag </STATES> shouldn't be there at line 16333. You haven't finished with all of your states yet. The one at line 16352 is the one you want to close out your <States> with. Try taking out the first one (line 16333).

just scanning over the screenshot posted... here are some issues to fix (some already addressed by Albatross):

106315: opens the new continent, but needs to be: <CONTINENT id="7" name="Atlantis".... (etc)... >

106316: delete this line. The </CONTINENT> entry is used to close it once you've added all your nations, states and cities. Assuming you aren't adding another continent, you can update line 106354 to </CONTINENT> to close it out. Line 106355 then closes out all continents.

You'll want to add a lines above 106354, first to close out the nation of Atlantis with </NATION>, and then to close out all nations with </NATIONS>; again, assuming you aren't adding more.

Line 106332: delete the extra /> after the </CITIES> entry.

Line 106333: change to </STATE> as you are only closing a single state, not finishing all state entries.

Line 106335: add <CITIES> to open the city group before entering the city data.

Line 106337: looks like this is supposed to be part of line 106335 (the longitude and abbr for that city).

Line 106341: delete the extra /> after the </CITIES> entry.

Line 106344: add <CITIES> above this entry to open the city group for the new state.

Line 106349: add <CITIES> above this entry to open the city group for the new state.

Actually, the problem is slightly different because I've changed certain things since the last post.
Here it is now:

I opened <CITIES> on line 42 and 47 as well. My only remaining issue is this <STATES> things.
