Pitching while playing another position?

I recently signed a prospect from the International Amateur pool. My scout wasn't overly crazy about him but the OOTP shows him to be a potential 5 star SP. The reason I went hard to get him is that he is also listed by both scouts as being a potentially talented outfielder (both hitting and fielding).

What I was going to try is this: change his position from an SP to CF. He will then still show up on my pitching options. I was going to slot him in to the rotation and still have him as my everyday (minus one in five) CF.

Has anyone ever tried this? And if so what were the results/pitfalls?
Any real life examples?

I've never done it myself, but there's a few threads on here about this sort of thing. I will warn you, you won't be able to use him every day he's not pitching. You'll have to give him some rest somewhere.

I had one player in my fictional league who was a pitcher in his first season (Number one starter with around a .500 record and 4.something ERA on a bad team) who had some good speed and hitting stats, so I converted him to center field as an experiment. He led the league in steals in his first season as a full-time hitter. He doesn't pitch anymore, though, but he probably would if he was on my team.

Thanks for the link! It appears you have to be pretty hands on with this process. I only set the lineups and depth charts for my minor league teams. I don't do 7 day lineups for them. My appetite for trying it is lessended since it appears that his development does not appear to be tied to playing time. It appears that if he fails as a starter I can simply switch him to a position with no penalty. My original hope was not to create a two way player for the major leagues but simpy have him develop one discipline or the other. But I must say it would be pretty cool to pull it off.

You really do have to be hands-on, because the AI is only ever going to see him as solely a position player or solely a pitcher, not both. To have him pitch and bat, you have to manually change his designation and set the lineups yourself.
