FA in historical leagues
Why do players who will be in a future draft show up as FAs on the league FA list during the season prior to the draft?

Not sure why but it’s always been like that. They aren’t actually FA’s though, they are just listed their until the draft.

My educated guess is that the players that will populate the following draft are created on July 1st (you get an email saying "Notable new players"), but since there is no other league structure other than the NHL in historical, they show up in FA so you can still scout them, otherwise, without juniors and Europeans leagues etc. they would not show up anywhere for you to scout.
You can sort them out with a filter by clicking the "Signable" box, but it's annoying. |

Yeah, that's exactly why, to give you the opportunity to scout them for a year instead of just having them suddenly appear a few days before the draft with to time to scout.
