While we are on this subject, I would like to point out I have rarely (if ever) seen AI managers (do they even differ at all in terms of making orations & lineups?...doesn't seems so) construct a pitching staff where there are differing roles other than 5 starters....one closer, two setup men (one of which always has a secondary role as a closer) a middle rotation pitcher to be used "more often", and then everyone else is normal usage.
I don't think I have ever seen a left handed specialist, or a "use less often" role, due to a struggling pitcher. I have seen most of the usages put into action (setup, emergency starter, long relief) but I have not seen all of the roles used in varying ways. |

Unfortunately, if a guy is marked as a CL, that's pretty much all the game recognizes him as. He's in for the 9th, and that's it. I have set closers with a secondary role - say, MR - but I don't know if that is ever used (even if I have a secondary closer). It also seems that the game will seldom look at the "8th or later" setting. As an example: Player Report for #15 Artie 'Shameless' Rogers Check out his '52 season. 79 games, 82.2 IP. Yeah - I don't think he's ever entering the game in the 8th, or in that secondary MR role. Setup men will see more time, but not as much as MR. They might pitch two IP 30-40% of the time, but that's about it ('53 I intentionally made him a Long Reliever near the end of the year). I understand there is a limit to what can be done with bullpen AI, and how I have used mine is a bit unconventional. But I'd still like to see the ability for these roles to be a little less set in stone. (For my other beef, the AI taking out a guy who only threw 5 pitches - and got two outs - for another non-specialist to face one batter. Way to tire guys out faster for me, AI!) |
