Your Recommended Team Nicknames, By City (A Crowdsourced Project)
If you expanded MLB, what team names would you select?
Have you ever wanted to get nickname ideas from others, but didn't want to wait for the responses or comb through old threads? Well, maybe this spreadsheet will come in handy in the future. Just fill out the below form to give your input first. I've started this project a few times before, but in the past I've just gone through old nickname threads for different cities and sooner or later I just gave up as it's a pretty tedious task. But then it occured to me yesterday, we could make a Google form that would not only make it interactive and catch input in the future, but it would also greatly cut down on the work. Who knows, if we get enough data maybe we can convince OOTP to pull expansion team nicknames based on the city from a curated list. Form #1 is for the following cities (based on the recent odds of what cities will get expansion teams): Nashville, Tennessee Charlotte, North Carolina Salt Lake City, Utah Portland, Oregon Montreal, Canada San Antonio, Texas Austin, Texas Las Vegas, Nevada Mexico City, Mexico Orlando, Florida I have more planned (30+ more cities), but I wanted to get this one posted first. I'll probably even do up forms for alternate names for cities that already have teams. EDIT: Form #2 teams (based on the cities OOTP likes to expand MLB to): Columbus, Ohio Indianapolis, Indiana Jacksonville, Florida El Paso, Texas Memphis, Tennessee Albuquerque, New Mexico Tucson, Arizona New Orleans, Louisiana Fresno, California Oklahoma City, Oklahoma EDIT: Form #3 teams: Virginia Beach, Virginia Brooklyn, New York East Rutherford, New Jersey Hartford, Connecticut Louisville, Kentucky Havana, Cuba Monterrey, Mexico San Juan, Puerto Rico Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Form #4 teams: Honolulu, Hawaii Omaha, Nebraska Raleigh, North Carolina Buffalo, New York Newark, New Jersey Providence, Rhode Island Richmond, Virginia Riverside, California Sacramento, California San Jose, California Form #5 includes the top 10 markets of cities that already have teams (for fictional leagues or in case someone someone wants to give that city another MLB team): New York, New York Los Angeles, California Chicago, Illinois Philadelphia, PA Dallas, Texas Atlanta, Georgia Houston, Texas Washington, DC Boston, Mass San Francisco, California Form #6 includes the next 10: Phoenix, Arizona Seattle, Washington Tampa Bay, Florida Detroit, Michigan Minneapolis, Minnesota Denver, Colorado Miami, Florida Cleveland, Ohio St. Louis, Missouri Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Form #7 includes the last 10 for cities (and boroughs) that currently have teams: Baltimore, Maryland San Diego, California Kansas City, Missouri Cincinnati, Ohio Milwaukee, Wisconsin Oakland, California Anaheim, California Toronto, Ontario, Canada Bronx, New York Queens, New York Form #8 includes the top 12 for Japan: Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan Osaka, Ōsaka, Japan Nagoya, Aichi, Japan Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan Fukuoka, Fukuoka, Japan Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan Kobe, Hyōgo, Japan Kyoto, Kyōto, Japan Saitama, Saitama, Japan Hiroshima, Hiroshima, Japan Sendai, Miyagi, Japan I'm especially looking forward to any Japan responses as the current league I'm playing is based in Japan. Form #9 includes another 12 for Japan: Chiba, Chiba, Japan Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan Sakai, Ōsaka, Japan Niigata, Niigata, Japan Nerima, Tokyo, Japan Kumamoto, Kumamoto, Japan Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan Okayama, Okayama, Japan Ōta, Tokyo, Japan Shizuoka, Shizuoka, Japan Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan Form #10 includes the top 10 for Canada (not including Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal which were already included in forms 3, 7, and 1 respectively): Calgary, Alberta, Canada Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Québec City, Québec, Canada Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Kitchener, Ontario, Canada London, Ontario, Canada Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Form #11 includes another 10 for Canada: Oshawa, Ontario, Canada Windsor, Ontario, Canada Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada Charlottetown, PEI, Canada St. Catharines – Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada Barrie, Ontario, Canada Form #12 includes the top 12 for South Korea: Seoul Busan Incheon Daegu Daejeon Gwangju Suwon Ulsan Changwon Goyang Yongin Seongnam

If I had a wish list, I'd have OOTP put, under Game Settings, empty slots for pre-qualified expansion team cities and names. I could then load the city/name combos such that if the league auto-expanded, it would choose from those. Heck, maybe even percentages so when it expands, it just runs the percentages the way it does for the draft lottery. Maybe a separate lottery for the city and then a random choice of up to three names I give it? I'd have the uniforms and logos for all ten already in the folder so when the news announcement came, the game could put the logo front and center of the article. Yeah, it's the little things sometimes...

Yeah, I'd be down for that too. Of course we could always change it to whatever we want, but it's always nice when you get something random that just fits. I'm sure we've all seen too many anatopistic names like the Indianapolis Canucks and Memphis Tsunamis.
If we get enough input I'll create a randomizer that can take either from the data from the forms or other names one can input. That's how I generate some of my team names. But yeah, it'd be cooler if the game generated them from a list we gave it. |

Nice cash-in on an obscure 50 cent word, sir!
The Charlotte Racers...they do have the NASCAR HOF. The San Antonio Rebels...Remember the Alamo. Portland can't even keep Walmart in town, so their prospects have taken a major hit. Vegas will get the A's. Charlotte & SA are both vibrant, strong local economies. My 2 cents. Probably about all it's worth, too.

I'm not sure if that's supposed to be a diss (I had to look up "50 cent word"), but even if it is, that's okay. It's just a concept (out of place instead of anachronistic's out of time) that I thought there should be a word for and then one day I came across it. And now every once in awhile I have to look it up because I forget it.
LOL, I checked to see if he inputted it too. Better posted than nothing at all I suppose. Maybe someone else will like them and input them. |

No, that’s not a diss. Too few people today speak eloquently. They live and die on the Dolch Sight Word list. Thanks for not being one of them. As for the form, I did overlook that. Got a lot on my mind of late. It’s why I’ve been scarce.

Form #2 teams:
Columbus, Ohio Indianapolis, Indiana Jacksonville, Florida El Paso, Texas Memphis, Tennessee Albuquerque, New Mexico Tucson, Arizona New Orleans, Louisiana Fresno, California Oklahoma City, Oklahoma This second form focuses on cities that OOTP likes to expand to. I ran 6 sims expanding by 2 teams every year for 6 expansions to see which were the most popular. Excluding a few (Vegas, Charlotte, San Antonio), I was a bit surprised to see that the teams from form #1, the teams that have the best recent odds of getting teams, are not popular expansion cities with OOTP. The above all are. |

Form #3 teams:
Virginia Beach, Virginia Brooklyn, New York East Rutherford, New Jersey Hartford, Connecticut Louisville, Kentucky Havana, Cuba Monterrey, Mexico San Juan, Puerto Rico Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada This third form includes cities that aren't particularly likely to get an MLB team any time soon, but I've seen them mentioned by some sites and I could see some people wanting to expand their MLB league to them. Form #4 will be similar, but will be exclusively US cities. After form #4 I'm going to do a series of forms for cities that do currently have teams and then I'm going to branch out and do other countries like Japan and Korea, and smaller cities in Mexico and Canada. If there's a US city you think should definitely be included in #4 that hasn't already been included, let me know. I have 11 right now, but I'd like to keep each form to 10 and maybe I don't yet have the best remaining 10. EDIT: Here are those 11 remaining cities I'm mulling over for form #4: Honolulu, Hawaii Omaha, Nebraska Raleigh, North Carolina Wichita, Kansas - this is the city I'd probably drop; I never would have thought of it, but OOTP expanded to it once in my test sims Buffalo, New York Newark, New Jersey Providence, Rhode Island Richmond, VA Riverside, California Sacramento, California San Jose, California

Form #5 includes the top 10 markets of cities that already have teams (for fictional leagues or in case someone someone wants to give that city another MLB team):
New York, New York Los Angeles, California Chicago, Illinois Philadelphia, PA Dallas, Texas Atlanta, Georgia Houston, Texas Washington, DC Boston, Mass San Francisco, California EDIT: I'm not including Toronto yet as the Nielsen ratings don't include them. Nor am I yet including cities like Anaheim that might be included in larger markets.

Form #14: Since the forms for cities in Canada have elicited so many great responses already (thank you!) and in case the contributors have any ideas for even more cities, I'm doing a third Canadian form:
Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada Guelph, Ontario, Canada Kanata, Ontario, Canada Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada Trois-Rivières, Québec, Canada Kingston, Ontario, Canada Milton, Ontario, Canada White Rock, British Columbia, Canada Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada Brantford, Ontario, Canada Including Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, which were included in the first 7 forms (Ctrl+F to find them), that brings us up to 33 Canadian cities. While I imagine some of us Canadians create 24-32 team Canadian leagues, I doubt many create more than that so we're probably good for Canadian cities. |
