Some pictures
Don't know if anyone has seen these...thought you might be interested. From the Chicago Daily News, circa 1909.
Joe Choynski (and no, I still haven't found a contemporary reference to his nickname "Chrysanthemum". I just don't have enough time to hang out at the library.)

One final one: this is allegedly the Sullivan/Kilrain fight. You can't really see them, but still......it's not a bad photo for 1889.

That's it, Erick. I am gonna kick your @ss. How DARE you not know how Joe Choynski is?
Seriously, Choynski (pronounced either coy-EN-ski or co-EN-ski, I'm not 100% sure) is considered by many to be the greatest Jewish heavyweight of all time. He was a small guy, only about 160-170 pounds, but he fought all of the top guys of his era. His most famous fight was a loss to Gentleman Jim Corbett, on a barge in San Francisco (both fighters were from SF). Choynski was known as a great puncher for his size. Late in his career, he knocked out a young Jack Johnson in Galveston, TX. Both men were arrested, and while they were in prison Choynski and Johnson became friends, and Joe tutored Johnson on the finer points of the game. Choynski was nicknamed "The California Terror" and "Chrysanthemum", a nickname that some people here have found rather outrageous. I am trying to find a contemproary reference to this name being used, alhough I honestly aven't had the time to look much. Choynski's father was the first Jew to ever graduate from Yale University, and was a newspaper publisher and political activist in San Francisco. I have been able to find precious little out about Isidore Choynski's newspaper, The Public Opinon, but I can only imagine if any survive it would be a great resource on Choynski (anyone live in San Francisco?). Choyenski acted as a technical advisor on the Errol Flynn movie "Gentleman Jim", and had a comic book written about is life in the 1940's. His record is available at boxrec.com. I think CBZ has a good article on him as well.
