(January to March 1980) January 4 - US President Jimmy Carter announced an embargo on US grain sales to Russia and cut off other economic ties to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. January 12 - Canadian alpine skier Ken Read of Calgary won a World Cup downhill race on the famous course at Kitzbuhel, Austria. January 14 - Indira Gandhi is sworn in as Prime Minister of India. She had been tossed from power in the mid-1970's for imposing oppressive emergency rule on the country. January 14 - The United Nations General Assembly voted 104-18 to adopt a resolution calling for Russia to remove it's invasion troops from Afghanistan. January 17 - US President Jimmy Carter announces approval of a tanker and pipeline route to bring Alaska's oil to the American Midwest, rejecting an all-land pipeling route that would go through Canada. January 20 - President Jimmy Carter announces that the US would boycott the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow if the Soviet Union does not withdraw it's invasion troops from Afghanistan. March 27 - Mount St. Helens volcano in southwestern Washington State becomes active after being dormant since 1857. |
