Too many protected players. Anyone else have this problem?

Sometimes it's difficult to know whether something is a bug, user stupidity, or just an anomaly that hits one game so I will not point fingers.

The game started. I get 50 protected players. I sign a free agent. I have 51 protected players. Then the game tells me I have too many protected players (50 is the limit). I go to cut one but I'm told that I can only get rid of people in the off-season. The end result is "end of game" since the game won't advance until I fix the problem, but the game won't let me fix the problem.

This to me, if it is a bug, is a huge one. But as I said, it could just be I'm missing something. Has anyone seen this? Would someone like to try this and see if I'm crazy? If 50 is the max, I believe the game shouldn't let me go above 50.

So is it me, is it the game, or is it Memorex?

possible workaround

I haven't encountered this bug, but cant you go to the Manager Home screen, turn on Commissioner mode, and change one of the player contracts one to another team?

I did as you suggested and then went and edited a player making him a free agent. He's still on my protected list but I had an option to "lapse player's rights" which I did. Now he's gone and the team is down to 50.

That's a lot of work to do something that I shouldn't have to do. Has no one seen this or tried to see it? I'd like to know if it's a bug or something I'm not doing.

You aren't alone - first thing I did when I started my game was sign two free agents. Now I've got 51 players and I can't buy anybody out because it's not the offseason.
