1939 CAPE BRETON COLLIERY LEAGUE
Teams: Glace Bay Miners New Waterford Dodgers Sydney Steel Citians Sydney Mines Ramblers All teams located in Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G60_T4_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="60" start_month="5" start_day="27" start_day_of_week="7" Each team plays either 59 or 60 games. Teams play each other either 19 or 20 times during the season. Season starts on May 27 and ends on September 9. All games start at 7:00, except for holiday - Dominion Day (7/1), Civic Holiday (8/7), and Labour Day (9/4) - games which start at 1:00. No Sunday games. The published schedule (Sporting News 3/30/1939) lists only 19 games between Sydney and Glace Bay. That may be a misprint, but there's no obvious place to insert an additional game. If I had to guess, Glace Bay should play at Sydney on June 7. A revised schedule with that game added is also attached. This is a real curiosity. This league started up as a semi-pro circuit with teams comprised mainly of workers from the steel plants and coal mines of northeastern Cape Breton. It went pro and joined organized baseball in 1937, and was a Class C league in 1939. It was noteworthy at the time for being integrated, and was popular with its working-class fans. The war ultimately forced the league to shut down. You can read more about this league here. Cape Breton Colliery League 1939.lsdl Cape Breton Colliery League 1939 (revised).lsdl

1957 PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE
Teams: Hollywood Stars Los Angeles Angels Portland Beavers Sacramento Solons San Diego Padres San Francisco Seals Seattle Rainiers Vancouver Mounties Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G168_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="168" start_month="4" start_day="11" start_day_of_week="5" Each team plays 168 games. Teams play each other either 21, 24, or 27 times during the season. Season starts on April 11 and ends on September 15. Double-headers on Sundays and holidays - Victoria Day (5/20 - Canada), Memorial Day (5/30), Dominion Day (7/1 - Canada), Independence Day (7/4), Labor Day (9/2) and California Admission Day (9/10 - California). Weekday and Saturday games start at 7:00. Sunday and holiday double-header games start at noon and 3:00. Single game at Vancouver on British Columbia Day (8/5 - Canada) starts at 1:00. Weekday double-header games start at 5:00 and 8:00. This is the last schedule for the "old" Pacific Coast League, before the Dodgers and Giants moved to the West Coast in 1958. It is also very likely the last 168-game schedule for a minor league. The AA and the IL both played 168-game seasons in the 1910s and '20s, but by the 1950s the PCL was the only league left that played such a lengthy schedule. As in previous PCL seasons, the typical series features single games Tue-Sat and double-headers on Sundays and holidays. The schedule maker, however, evidently goofed by giving Vancouver home games on Memorial Day and July 4 and by scheduling a double-header in Seattle on California Admission Day. The league's all-star game was set for July 2. Pacific Coast League 1957.lsdl

1943 SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION
Teams: Atlanta Crackers Birmingham Barons Chattanooga Lookouts Knoxville Smokies Little Rock Travelers Memphis Chicks Nashville Volunteers New Orleans Pelicans BR says that Chattanooga was replaced by the Montgomery Rebels in mid-season Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G140_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="140" start_month="4" start_day="23" start_day_of_week="6" Teams play 140 games. Teams play each other 20 times. Season starts on April 26 and ends on September 6. Weekday games start at 7:00. Weekend games start at 1:00. Double-headers on Sundays and holidays - Independence Day (7/5) and Labor Day (9/6) - start at noon and 3:00. Weekday day-night double-header games start at 1:00 and 7:00. This is an unusual schedule because most teams make only two trips to each opponent, which means that most series are five games. No doubt that was due to wartime travel restrictions. The league also loaded up on Sunday double-headers at the expense of scheduling Saturday games, resulting in a lot of Saturdays that are off-days. A two-day gap in the schedule - July 9-10 - probably means that the league's all-star game was played on one of those days. Southern Association 1943.lsdl

1922 BLUE GRASS LEAGUE
Teams: Cynthiana Merchants Lexington Reds Maysville Cardinals Mt. Sterling Essex Paris Bourbons Winchester Dodgers All teams located in Kentucky Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G50_T6_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="50" start_month="4" start_day="23" start_day_of_week="1" Teams play 50 games. Teams play each other from 9 to 11 times. Season starts on April 27 and ends on October 12. Thursday games start at 3:00. Sunday and holiday games start at 1:00. No double-headers. The published schedule has a number of errors. Paris is listed as playing at Cynthiana on July 6 - that should be July 16. For a 50-game season, this lasts a surprisingly long time - from late April to mid-October. Teams play two games a week - Thursdays and Sundays - except for games on Decoration Day and Independence Day. Blue Grass League 1922.lsdl |

1916 EASTERN LEAGUE
Teams: Bridgeport (CT) Hustlers Hartford (CT) Senators Lawrence (MA) Barristers Lowell (MA) Grays Lynn (MA) Pipers New Haven (CT) Murlins New London (CT) Planters Portland (ME) Duffs Springfield (MA) Ponies Worcester (MA) Busters Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G126_T10_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="126" start_month="4" start_day="28" start_day_of_week="6" Teams play 126 games. Teams play each other 14 times. The season starts on April 28 and ends on September 16. Weekday games start at 3:00. Saturday games start at 1:00. Double-headers start at noon and 3:00, except for home-and-home double-headers, which start at 10:00 and 3:00. On June 17, Portland plays at Lynn in the morning and Lawrence in the afternoon, while Springfield plays at Lynn in the afternoon. No Sunday games. The published schedule (Sporting Life, 4/22/1916) has Lowell playing at Springfield on Sept. 19 - that should be Sept. 9. Worcester is shown playing at Lowell on Aug. 19-20 - that should be Aug. 9-10. Even more unusual in the railroad era than a twelve-team format was the ten-team format. The Eastern League re-formed in 1916 (the original EL became the International League in 1912) and apparently everyone was invited to join. The league trimmed down to eight teams in 1917. 1926 WESTERN LEAGUE
Teams: Denver (CO) Bears Des Moines (IA) Demons Lincoln (NE) Links Oklahoma City (OK) Indians Omaha (NE) Buffaloes St. Joseph (MO) Saints Tulsa (OK) Oilers Wichita (KS) Izzies Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G168_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="168" start_month="4" start_day="16" start_day_of_week="4" Teams play 168 games. Teams play each other 24 times. The season starts on April 16 and ends on September 27. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend games start at 1:00. Double-headers start at noon and 3:00. How do you fit 168 games into a 160-day season? Lots and lots of double-headers. Decoration Day and Independence Day both fell on Sundays, so holiday double-headers were scheduled for the following Mondays. Western League 1926.lsdl |

1914 UNION ASSOCIATION
Teams: Boise (ID) Irrigators Butte (MT) Miners Helena (MT) Senators Murray (UT) Infants Ogden (UT) Canners Salt Lake City (UT) Seagulls/Skyscrapers Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G124_T6_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="124" start_month="4" start_day="28" start_day_of_week="3" Teams play 124 games. Teams play each other from 24 to 26 times. Teams play either 60, 62, or 64 home games. Split-season format - first half of season ends with games on July 5. The season starts on April 28 and ends on September 14. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend games start at 1:00. Double-headers start at noon and 3:00. Games on Pioneer Day (July 24) start at 1:00. Not to be confused with the would-be major-league Union Association of 1884, this UA was a minor league that existed from 1911 to 1914. Because of the long distances between some of the cities, the league adopted a PCL-style schedule that typically saw teams face each other from Tuesday through Sunday, with double-headers on holidays. The published schedule has Ogden hosting Murray for three series instead of the usual two. That may be a misprint, although it's difficult to verify because the league ceased operations in early August. I moved the Aug. 25-30 series to Murray. Union Association 1914.lsdl This will be my last schedule for a while as I embark on a different project.

Since it's the first of the historical minors to be added, I'd like to see the 1919 Texas League.

I'll see what I can do.
In the meantime, I don't have any objections to others posting historical minor league schedules in this thread. All I ask is that you adhere to the following format.

1919 TEXAS LEAGUE
Teams: Beaumont Oilers Dallas Marines Ft. Worth Panthers Galveston Pirates Houston Buffaloes San Antonio Bronchos Shreveport Gassers Waco Navigators All teams located in Texas except for Shreveport (LA). Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G141_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="141" start_month="4" start_day="21" start_day_of_week="2" Teams play 141 games. Teams play each other either 20 or 21 times. Teams play from 69 to 72 home games. Season starts on April 22 and ends on September 6. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend games start at 1:00. Double-headers on holidays (Independence Day (7/4) and Labor Day (9/1)) start at noon and 3:00. The printed schedule (Sporting News, 3/27/1919) is in bad shape, but I think I got everything right. As is typical with the Texas League, there are no off-days. The schedule has Galveston only playing 140 games while San Antonio plays 142. I'm confident that's a mistake, and that Galveston should play at Houston on Aug. 30 while the Houston-San Antonio game listed for April 21 is a misprint. Shreveport hosts Ft. Worth 9 times and plays at Ft. Worth 11 times, which suggests that Shreveport may have given up one of its home games to Ft. Worth, possibly for a larger share of the visitors' gate. That certainly wasn't unheard of at the time, and there's no obvious way to move one of those games back to Shreveport, so I let it stand. Texas League 1919.lsdl

Hmmm, consulting the 1919 Texas League final standings, the number of games played to a decision ranged from a low of 146 games to a high of 158. The regular season ran from April 12 to Sept. 21. So it would seem the Texas League either adopted a different schedule at some point, or revised the one it had adopted.

Wow, that's a huge discrepancy. The only explanation I can offer is that the TL, like major league baseball, was taken unawares by the big resurgence of fan interest in the wake of the war, and decided to take advantage of it at the last moment by adopting a longer schedule.
EDIT: Yep, that's what happened:

You may be able to find a revised schedule published in the weekly editions of The Sporting News with a bit of searching (assuming you have access to Paper of Record). I know revised schedules were published for other leagues when major changes were made (e.g. the PCL in 1928, 1929, 1934, 1935. 1938, 1946, and 1956).

Teams: Bloomington (IL) Crawfordsville (IN) Hoosiers Danville (IL) Browns Davenport (IA) Decatur (IL) Dubuque (IA) Peoria (IL) Reds Rockford (IL) BR also lists Lafayette (IN) and Terre Haute (IN) as having teams in this league. They may have joined later or replaced existing clubs. Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G112_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="112" start_month="5" start_day="1" start_day_of_week="3" Teams play 112 games. Holiday (Decoration Day (5/30) and Independence Day (7/4)) double-headers start at noon and 3:00. Sunday games only at Davenport, Dubuque, and Peoria. Not to be confused with the Interstate League (which BR does), a series of leagues in the first half of the 20th century centered around Pennsylvania. Minor leagues in the railroad era typically scheduled double-headers on the summer holidays - Decoration Day/Memorial Day, Independence Day, and (starting in 1894) Labor Day. For those of you who want to use these schedules for your own leagues and want to make sure that the holidays line up correctly, you can refer to the following chart:
(A) May 30 and July 4 fall on a Monday and Labor Day is Sept. 5:
(B) May 30 and July 4 fall on a Tuesday and Labor Day is Sept. 4:
(C) May 30 and July 4 fall on a Wednesday and Labor Day is Sept. 3:
(D) May 30 and July 4 fall on a Thursday and Labor Day is Sept. 2:
(E) May 30 and July 4 fall on a Friday and Labor Day is Sept. 1:
(F) May 30 and July 4 fall on a Saturday and Labor Day is Sept. 7:
(G) May 30 and July 4 fall on a Sunday and Labor Day is Sept. 6:
I'm not sure when Memorial Day and Independence Day started being observed on either Friday or Monday when those holidays fell on a weekend - I think some states started doing that in the 1930s. That will, therefore, affect mostly post-war schedules.
