1950-51 United Leagues of Braeland Awards

Eastern League

Babe Ruth Award

It was only a matter of time before Downie’s CF Alfonso León (.342/.407/.611, 43-2B, 32 HR, 126 RBI, 9.3 WAR) got his due, as the Puerto Rican native has excelled ever since he broke into the United Leagues in 1946, after being selected 2nd overall by Downie in 1944-45. León finished runner-up last season for the Babe Ruth Award but would not be denied this year. His 9.26 WAR for the season places him just behind Danny Trowbridge’s 1944-45 season, where Trowbridge finished with 9.31 WAR.

León led the Eastern League in SLG (.611), OPS (1.018), WAR (9.3), isolated power (.269), total bases (366), HR (32) and RBI (126). He finished in the Top 5 in five other offensive categories (runner-up three times).

This year’s runners-up were:

2nd: Downie’s 2B Dominic Dudding (.335/.423/.559, 38-2B, 23 HR, 109 RBI, 8.1 WAR)
3rd: Cobourg’s CF Raymond Williams (.328/.418/.576, 40-2B, 30 HR, 121 RBI, 8.1 WAR)

Dudding led the circuit in Runs (119). He finished in the Top 5 in nine other offensive categories (runner-up twice).

Williams finished in the Top 5 in thirteen categories (runner-up five times).

Satchel Paige Award

Back in 1942-43, RHP Aaron Saunderson (19-12, 3.29 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 3.51 FIP, 122 ERA+) finished 2nd behind LHP Anastasio Rodríguez for the Satchel Paige Award, but this past season saw the 30-year old veteran come out on top in an extremely close (and confusing?) vote. Saunders and Luis Cruz actually tied for most points with Cruz getting more first-place votes. Yet, Saunderson got the nod. But the 5-time All-Star, who has also pitched for the Wolseley Unions and Queensland Eagles, has been an absolute workhorse year after year, so its hard to begrudge him over the well-deserved accolade.

Saunderson led the East in GS (35), IP (292.2) and complete games (26). He finished in the Top 5 in three other categories.

Saunderson’s win is the first for a RH pitcher in the East since Lenny Freke won it back in 1939-40 and just the third overall.

Coming in behind Saunderson were:

2nd: Cobourg's RHP Luis Cruz (15-11, 2.98 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 3.33 FIP, 135 ERA+)
3rd: Downie’s RHP Joong Ling (12-5, 2.82 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 3.27 FIP, 140 ERA+)

Cruz led the Eastern League in K/BB (1.5) and tied for WAR (6.0). He finished in the Top 5 in four other pitching categories.

Ling, who finished in 3rd spot last season as well, led in ERA (2.82), Winning PCT (.706), OPP SLG (.332) and OPP OPS (.639). He finished in the Top 5 in three other categories (runner-up twice).

Hawking led in OPB (.448), OPS (.999), RC/27 Outs (9.07), games (151- tied), runs (109), total bases (300), BB (129) and intentional walks (11-tied). He finished in the Top 5 in five other categories (runner-up twice).

Satchel Paige Award

With this year's award, 32-year old RHP Roberto Taváres (21-10, 2.40 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 3.37 FIP, 164 ERA+) becomes the first player to win the Satchel Paige Award with two different clubs. Taváres previously won the award back in 1944-45 with the Sherburn Tigers. He also finished 2nd in voting in 1948-49.

The voting was not close this year. Taváres led the West in Wins (21 - tied), ERA (2.40), complete games (23), shutouts (6) and HR/9 (0.4). He also finished in the Top 5 in five other pitching categories (runner-up once).

Finishing behind Taváres in voting this year were:

2nd: Cambria’s LHP Jamie Wigley (15-10, 2.44 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 2.96 FIP, 163 ERA+)
3rd: Fort Richmond's RHP Ch’ang-chieh Li (15-11, 2.78 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 3.27 FIP, 142 ERA+)

Wigley led the Western League in games started (35 - tied), OPP SLG (.325), OPP OPS (.615) and WAR (7.3 -tied). He finished in the Top 5 in ten other categories (runner-up twice).

Li led in WHIP (1.13), BABIP (.240), H/9 IP (7.6), OPP SLG (.227) and OPP OBP (.284). He finished in the Top 5 insix other categories (runner-up once).

Rookie of the Year Award

Wolseley only signed him as a minor league free agent back in April 1950, but 22-year old 3B Carlos Ortíz (.340/.399/.550, 26-2B, 12 HR, 56 RBI, 3.7 WAR) quickly established himself, earning an all-star selection, a playoff MVP award and then a United Cup Championship. Now, Ortíz has added a Rookie of the Year Award to his mantlepiece, the fourth Unions player to do so.

The runners-up for the Rookie Award were:

2nd: Pulberry’s CF Cooper Tyson (.263/.320/.429, 35-2B, 13 HR, 46 RBI, 5.1 WAR)
3rd: Hespeler’s CF John McMurray (.273/.326/.455, 24-2B, 12 HR, 71 RBI, 3.2 WAR)

Tyson led the West in strikeouts (101), while McMurray led in triples (18).

Manager of the Year Award

50-year old Finlay Fay (481-443, .521) holds the distinction of being the first manager to win a United Cup, back with the 1937-38 Kingston Pelicans. Then he was unceremoniously dumped by the team and spent seven years in the wilderness. In 1943, the Cambria Cannons picked him up to be their bench coach. He spent three seasons there until the Brunswick Legends hired him to be their field manager in 1946. Although the Legends have been in flux since their championship years, Fay has kept them competitive and his work was rewarded this past season as he earned his first Manager of the Year Award. Fay has an excellent reputation, but his fiery personality is well known throughout the Leagues. Ejections can happen at any time when he is managing a game.

The polar opposite to Fay is Fort Richmond’s 45-year old manager, John Mathis (279-183, .604). Mathis is as laid back as they come. Nevertheless, he is aggressive, frequently calling for sac bunts and squeeze plays. Mathis started his managing career with a bang three seasons ago when he led the Generals to a 103-51 record and a first-place finish. The team has made the playoffs each season under Mathis’ guidance, but he has yet to take home the Cup. However, he did pick up his first Manager of the Year Award this season, ending Wolseley manager Tony Fay’s two-year reign.

New Records Set

Just one new record on offense was set this season. Downie’s CF Alfonso León set a new mark for total bases with 366. That broke the old mark of 361, originally set by Hall of Famer Okuro Ito back in 1938-1939.

On the pitching side of things, Queensland’s RHP Logan Belsey set two new marks: 203 strikeouts (surpassing RHP Oscar Burress’ mark of 173, set back in 1941-42) and 6.556 K/9 IP (breaking LHP Larry Kovnats’ mark of 5.752 set just last season).

Finally, RHP Kent Dundon of the Brunswick Legends set a new mark with 198 walks given up. That surpassed the old record of 180, set just last season by Hespeler’s RHP Paul Woodruff.

Notes on 1950-51 All-Braeland Team

Starting Pitcher

There were some fine pitching performances this past season, but in my view, one stood clearly above the rest. 32-year old RHP Roberto Taváres is an eight-time all-star (he failed to qualify in 1942-43, his first full season in the ULB) and previously won the Satchel Paige Award back in 1944-45 with the Sherburn Tigers, where he went 20-8, 2.33 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 2.90 FIP, 156 ERA+. His performance this year was right on par with that and he was clearly the top pitcher in the United Leagues. But he was not alone in enjoying a banner year on the mound. Below are some other performances that I felt were worth noting in addition to Taváres (league leading stats in bold). Personally, I’ve developed a soft spot for 26-year old RHP Rodrigo González, Balmoral Giants’ No. 3 starter. The Puerto Rican González was the 110th overall pick (14th pick, round 7) back in 1944-45 and enjoyed a tremendous season, just his second in the majors. He’s already earned two all-star selections, so here’s hoping his success continues.

• Fort Richmond’s Roberto Taváres - 21-10, 2.40 ERA, 34 GS, 281.0 IP, 77 K, 1.26 WHIP, 0.4 HR/9, 2.9 BB/9, 2.5 K/9, .258 BABIP, 3.37 FIP, 164 ERA+, 5.9 WAR.

• Embro’s 32-year old LHP Aaron Saunderson – 19-12, 3.29 ERA, 35 GS, 292.2 IP, 120 K, 1.37 WHIP, 0.6 HR/9, 3.2 BB/9, 3.7 K/9, .277 BABIP, 3.51 FIP, 122 ERA+, 5.9 WAR.

• Cambria’s 28-year old LHP Jamie Wigley – 15-10, 2.44 ERA, 35 GS, 266.0 IP, 135 K, 1.15 WHIP, 0.5 HR/9, 2.4 BB/9, 4.6 K/9, .259 BABIP, 2.96 FIP, 163 ERA+, 7.4 WAR.

• Fort Richmond’s 28-year old RHP Ch’ang-chieh Li – 15-11, 2.78 ERA, 33 GS, 278.2 IP, 128 K, 1.13 WHIP, 0.6 HR/9, 2.6 BB/9, 4.1 K/9, .240 BABIP, 3.27 FIP, 142 ERA+, 6.3 WAR.

• Balmoral’s Rodrigo González21-10, 2.78 ERA, 32 GS, 265.1 IP, 96 K, 1.27 WHIP, 0.8 HR/9, 2.5 BB/9, 3.3 K/9, .266 BABIP, 3.72 FIP, 144 ERA+, 4.6 WAR.

--------

Catcher

Initially, I absent-mindedly selected Braeland City’s 29-year old Christopher Dainty as the top catcher in the United Leagues before remembering that Fort Richmond’s 30-year old Louis Wearne won the Western League Babe Ruth Award this season. Both are worthy choices as top catcher, but Wearne was obviously the deserving one this year. Nevertheless, Dainty had an outstanding year, the best thus far of his four-year career. Its not hard to envision him as a top choice in the not-too-distant future.

Camasura and Denis also had fine seasons, but Wearne and Dainty were clearly the two top choices.

Louis Wearne – .297/.403/.576, 131 H, 21-2B, 34 HR, 90 RBI, 80 BB, .979 OPS, 178 OPS+, 7.2 WAR, 1.085 EFF.

Christopher Dainty – .342/.444/.528, 155 H, 30-2B, 16 HR, 79 RBI, 83 BB, .972 OPS, 155 OPS+, 7.0 WAR, 1.015 EFF.

• Kingston’s 25-year old Carlos Camasura – .326/.406/.476, 148 H, 27-2B, 11 HR, 65 RBI, 64 BB, .882 OPS, 144 OPS+, 5.9 WAR, 1.043 EFF.

• Wolseley’s 26-year old Éric Denis – .331/.388/.467, 170 H, 26-2B, 14 HR, 85 RBI, 46 BB, .855 OPS, 136 OPS+, 5.8 WAR, .927 EFF.

--------

First Base

For the past 11 seasons, three players have vied as the top first baseman in the ULB: Jim Friend (7 times), Dean Bishop (twice) and Stuart Bentham (twice). Friend (37 years old) and Bishop (36) both endured down years, especially compared to their previous seasons and their careers appear to be winding down. But Brunswick's 34-year old Stuart Bentham enjoyed another outstanding season – at least at the plate – and earned his third selection to the All-Braeland Team. Still, there is a definite ‘changing of the guard’ feel to the position, with the likes of Cobourg’s 25-year old Harry Doxey and Braeland City’s 27-year old Dean Witherden leading the charge. Other talented first basemen, such as Cambria’s 24-year old Carlos Correa (3.6 WAR) and Queensland’s 25-year old Ryan Conisford (3.3 WAR), could soon be joining them in the annual discussion.

Stuart Bentham – .348/.442/.554, 207 H, 35-2B, 27 HR, 97 RBI, 95 BB, .995 OPS, 162 OPS+, 5.5 WAR, .892 EFF.

Harry Doxey – .347/.388/.513, 219 H, 45-2B, 16 HR, 105 RBI, 48 BB, .901 OPS, 137 OPS+, 5.2 WAR, 1.046 EFF.

Dean Witherden – .333/.378/.503, 198 H, 31-2B, 22 HR, 78 RBI, 44 BB, .881 OPS, 130 OPS+, 4.0 WAR, .981 EFF.

--------

Second Base

Two players who moved full-time to second base this past season enjoyed unqualified success. Downie’s 25-year old Dominic Dudding was selected as the top third baseman two seasons ago but yielded to 23-year old rookie Louie Revill (4th overall pick – 1947-48). Dudding was just outstanding and was the easy pick as the top second baseman. But Kingston’s 14-year veteran, 35-year old Katsunan Chikafuji, enjoyed his best season in 5 years after moving back to second base full-time. Chikafuji earned his first selection to the All-Braeland Team as a second baseman in the ULB’s inaugural season. But he made the shift to shortstop full-time the following year and earned three more selections to the All-Braeland Team from 1943 to 1945. He nearly earned his fifth selection but Dudding was the clear choice.

Dominic Dudding – .335/.423/.559, 190 H, 38-2B, 23 HR, 109 RBI, 87 BB, .982 OPS, 165 OPS+, 7.7 WAR, 1.020 EFF.

Katsunan Chikafuji – .318/.415/.551, 138 H, 19-2B, 26 HR, 100 RBI, 67 BB, .965 OPS, 166 OPS+, 6.6 WAR, 1.008 EFF.

• Braeland City’s 25-year old Patrick Lidgate – .301/.381/.541, 181 H, 28-2B, 28 HR, 100 RBI, 75 BB, .921 OPS, 140 OPS+, 6.2 WAR, 1.014 EFF.

• Stratford’s 38-year old Jake Walker.351/.465/.465, 181 H, 32-2B, 7 HR, 86 RBI, 112 BB, .930 OPS, 148 OPS+, 5.0 WAR, .910 EFF.

--------

Third Base

After two relatively down years, Cobourg’s 29-year old Alexander Tolmie came back in a big way this past season to earn his second selection to the All-Braeland Team. Tolmie is currently rated as the top third baseman in the ULB and he certainly played like it. Jorge Arredondo, who earned his first selection to the Team last year, did not have as quite a strong season, while Rookie of the Year winner Carlos Ortíz is already rated as the 3rd best third baseman. He will be someone to watch in subsequent years.

Alexander Tolmie – .334/.421/.525, 184 H, 33-2B, 24 HR, 101 RBI, 91 BB, .946 OPS, 149 OPS+, 6.3 WAR, .983 EFF.

• Brunswick’s 30-year old Jorge Arredondo – .285/.385/.440, 170 H, 19-2B, 21 HR, 87 RBI, 97 BB, .825 OPS, 117 OPS+, 4.9 WAR, 1.008 EFF.

• Wolseley’s 22-year old Carlos Ortíz – .340/.399/.550, 120 H, 26-2B, 12 HR, 56 RBI, 36 BB, .949 OPS, 161 OPS+, 3.7 WAR, .948 EFF.

--------

Shortstop

26-year old Nobuyoshi Yoshida spent the 1949-50 season as Fort Richmond’s starting second baseman and received consideration for the All-Braeland Team. But with the acquisition of 25-year old Derek Reed, Yoshida returned to the shortstop position this year and enjoyed his best season by far. Although the position has always produced a strong field of candidates, Yoshida made this selection easy. He beat out last year’s selection, César Ruíz.

Nobuyoshi Yoshida.348/.399/.464, 210 H, 32-2B, 10 HR, 78 RBI, 49 BB, .864 OPS, 147 OPS+, 8.2 WAR, 1.071 EFF.

• Cambria’s 31-year old César Ruíz – .318/.410/.556, 141 H, 36-2B, 20 HR, 91 RBI, 71 BB, .966 OPS, 172 OPS+, 6.4 WAR, .985 EFF.

• Hespeler's 28-year old Zhao-hui Qian – .316/.376/.477, 189 H, 22-2B, 17 HR, 75 RBI, 62 BB, .854 OPS, 134 OPS+, 6.2 WAR, 1.022 EFF.

• Wolseley's 30-year old George Kimpton – .296/.371/.473, 185 H, 37-2B, 19 HR, 87 RBI, 75 BB, .844 OPS, 132 OPS+, 5.4 WAR, .948 EFF.

--------

Leftfield

Wolseley's 30-year old Carlton Hawking has been selected to the All-Braeland Team in four of the past five seasons. His dominance continued this year as he earned his fifth selection. But he is no longer considered the top-ranked left fielder. That distinction now belongs to Wellington’s 24-year old sophomore, Matthew Floyd. There is currently a large gap between them and the rest of the field, although Queensland’s 25-year old rookie Rod Dennis (2.6 WAR) may one day join them.

Carlton Hawking – .314/.448/.551, 171 H, 28-2B, 29 HR, 97 RBI, 129 BB, .999 OPS, 175 OPS+, 6.9 WAR, .968 EFF.

Matthew Floyd – .312/.369/.553, 188 H, 33-2B, 30 HR, 113 RBI, 54 BB, .923 OPS, 147 OPS+, 6.3 WAR, 1.049 EFF.

• Embro’s 29-year old Rizalino Ringor – .302/.451/.454, 133 H, 12-2B, 13 HR, 58 RBI, 124 BB, .904 OPS, 141 OPS+, 3.8 WAR, .957 EFF.

Centerfield

The centerfield spot in the United Leagues is filled with young, dynamic players, led by Downie's 25-year old Alfonso León and Cobourg’s 25-year old Raymond Williams. Williams earned a spot on the Team last year and was outstanding once again, but León put in one of the greatest seasons by a ULB position player. He richly deserved the honor this time around.

Below are the current Top Five centerfielders ranked in order. It will be interesting to how rookies Tyson and Mars develop in future seasons.

Alfonso León – .342/.407/.611, 205 H, 43-2B, 32 HR, 126 RBI, 71 BB, 1.018 OPS, 174 OPS+, 9.3 WAR, 1.029 EFF.

Raymond Williams – .328/.418/.576, 190 H, 40-2B, 30 HR, 121 RBI, 88 BB, .994 OPS, 161 OPS+, 7.7 WAR, 1.009 EFF.

• Pulberry’s 24-year old Cooper Tyson – .263/.320/.429, 153 H, 35-2B, 13 HR, 46 RBI, 49 BB, .749 OPS, 112 OPS+, 5.1 WAR, 1.047 EFF.

• Wellington’s 25-year old Jim Mars - .325/.395/.481, 179 H, 26-2B, 12 HR, 82 RBI, 66 BB, .876 OPS, 136 OPS+, 4.8 WAR, .978 EFF.

• Fort Richmond’s 29-year old Dylan Moyne – .272/.343/.406, 154 H, 18-2B, 16 HR, 70 RBI, 57 BB, .749 OPS, 114 OPS+, 4.2 WAR, 1.016 EFF.

--------

Rightfield

Rightfield is currently the weakest spot by far in the ULB. Brunswick’s 30-year old Marcus Peyto enjoyed his best season in three years to pick up his second selection to the All-Braeland Team, but it was still a far cry from his 1947-48 season when he earned 6.1 WAR. Kingston’s 27-year old Mo Spenceley (2.3 WAR) is ranked as the top rightfielder, but he is taking a long time to get comfortable in the majors. His offense is improving nicely, but his defense is woeful (-9.7 ZR, .986 EFF) despite his outstanding defensive ratings at the outfield corners.

It may take a fresh-faced 23-year old to lift the position out of the doldrums. Pulberry’s 2nd overall pick from 1946-47, John Oldknow (32/80) finally reached the majors late last season and will embark on his rookie campaign as the Trolley’s starting rightfielder. In the early going, he will bat in the No. 5 spot against RHP and lead-off against LHP.

Marcus Peyto – .291/.392/.507, 156 H, 38-2B, 24 HR, 93 RBI, 92 BB, .899 OPS, 136 OPS+, 3.8 WAR, .979 EFF.

• Stratford’s 34-year old Nicky Willis – .278/.415/.477, 134 H, 25-2B, 23 HR, 98 RBI, 117 BB, .892 OPS, 137 OPS+, 2.8 WAR, .927 EFF.

• Embro’s 25-year old Jose Maldonado – .290/.384/.464, 146 H, 19-2B, 17 HR, 58 RBI, 80 BB, .848 OPS, 125 OPS+, 2.4 WAR, .973 EFF.

Thanks Klew1986! I didn't realize there was still any interest in a quickstart. But I posted one for OOTP20 as well as a 'latest and greatest' graphics folder in the post linked below should anyone be interested in them:

Clyde Boney Inducted into Hall of Fame
Wellington Athletics Sees Its First Player Honoured

Balmoral, Oxford, May 18 (BP) – He may have been a bridesmaid when it came to player awards, but there was no denying LHP Clyde Boney this year. After finishing with 64.9% of the vote in 1950, the 41-year old Boney earned induction into the Braeland Hall of Fame on his second try, picking up 77.6% of the votes in total. The 12-year veteran, who hails from Pulberry, Oxford, is the fourth pitcher to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and 9th player overall.

Boney’s election marks a milestone for the Hall of Fame, as he is first player to be inducted solely by the Baseball Reporters Association of Braeland (BRAB), as the six-member Hall of Fame panel was dissolved after the 1949 selection process. He is also the first player to be inducted into the new Braeland Museum and Baseball Hall of Fame in Balmoral. Previous ceremonies were held at Gilbert Hall on the adjacent King Hugh University campus.

Although he did not win a Satchel Paige Award as his League’s best pitcher, he came close twice, finishing as runner-up to RHP Colm Soper in 1937-38 and RHP Lenny Freke in 1939-40. Interestingly, all three pitchers are the same age (41) and both Soper and Freke are still pitching – out of the bullpen with the Queensland Eagles.

But Clyde Boney was no stranger to the yearly Leaderboards. Having played almost exclusively in the Eastern League his entire career, he led the League in Wins twice, Winning % twice, Strikeouts three times, BABIP twice, WHIP twice, RA/9 twice, H/9 four times, K/9 twice and Shutouts three times. Listed below are some his other accomplishments as well as the results of the Hall of Fame voting.

BRAELAND JOINS UNITED NATIONS, KOREAN WAR
GENERAL ASSEMBLY APPROVES ADMISSION, BRAELAND COMMITS TO UN ACTION IN KOREA

United Nations Headquarters, New York City, U.S. - Currently Under Construction

BRAELAND CITY, June 28 (BP) – Prime Minister Wesley Bryans delivered on one of his key campaign promises when the United Nations General Assembly unanimously approved Braeland’s application to become a Member State. The successful vote, conducted at the nearly-completed UN Headquarters in New York City yesterday morning, makes Braeland the 61st member of the United Nations and the most recent since Indonesia was admitted in September 1950. In response to its admittance, Braeland immediately established its Permanent Representation, headed by Braeland’s former Ambassador to Spain, Tyrone Duncan.

Commitment to Korean War Meets Criticism

But while the achievement was cause for celebration, especially among party faithful, the Government quickly waded into controversial waters when it announced shortly after the successful vote that it would begin contributing to the United Nations’ combat effort on the Korean Peninsula. The decision to involve Braeland Armed Forces was met with criticism from both the Liberal and United Labour Parties.

“Any decision to engage military forces in a non-emergency situation should be a matter of debate in the House of Commons”, asserted Liberal interim leader Hubert Sullivan, speaking in Parliament this morning. “The government acting in such a unilateral way sets a dangerous precedent. I would hope, Mr. Speaker, that the Prime Minister would respect the Constitution and the democratic principles our government is based upon.”

Prime Minister Bryans responded to the attacks by defending his government actions, declaring that deploying military forces falls under royal prerogative and does not require parliamentary authorisation. But he did clarify that Braeland’s initial contribution to the conflict would involve only naval and air forces. “In response to UN Security Council Resolution 83, Braeland will follow through on providing initial military assistance to the Republic of Korea. However, the matter of deploying ground forces to the region will be a mater of debate in the House of Commons in the coming days. Of course, the House will be continually updated with reports on the military actions.”

Navy Returns to Action; First Test for Fledgling Air Force

At yesterday’s press conference, Defense Minister Cedric Phelps outlined Braeland’s initial contribution to the Korean conflict. Two Loch class frigates recently acquired from the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy, the HMBR Gowen and HMBR Mitchell, will depart shortly from the Cambria Naval Base to join Commonwealth forces at Sasebo, Japan and serve under British Command. Braeland will also contribute units from its fledgling Air Force, created in the last years of the previous Liberal government, fulfilling a personal goal of former Prime Minister Douglas Avery. Mr. Phelps announced that three Gloster Meteors and five F-86 Sabres would be attached to Australia’s No. 77 Squadron RAAF. But it was Mr. Phelps’ response to a reporter’s question on the possible commitment of ground forces in Korea that stirred up controversy in the House of Commons this morning.

“Braeland is committed to supporting the United Nations’ call for military assistance in Korea. Efforts are underway to raise a volunteer military force to serve with UN forces, with a goal of providing 800 volunteers as expeditiously as possible.”

Following the testy exchange during question time in Parliament, the Ministry of Defense issued a clarification, stating that the Minister was not declaring that unilateral action was being taken by the government, but merely providing a ‘blueprint’ for timely debate in the House of Commons.

This past off-season was a quiet one, at least in player deals. Precious few trades and free-agent signings were made. In fact, the biggest news this off-season was made in management shuffles, as several teams made changes to their leadership ranks rather than shake-up their roster. But there was one notable player departure: 44-year old RHP Satchel Paige was granted his outright release from the Kingston Pelicans so that he could sign with the St. Louis Browns. He rejoins owner Bill Veeck, who recently purchased a majority share in the American League club.

Here are some of the noteworthy baseball developments that transpired since the conclusion of the United Cup back in April and the start of the Coconut Leagues in late August:

Noteworthy Retirements:

SP Ryan Borden – 14-year career (210-154, 3.26 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 128 ERA+); 2 Satchel Paige Awards (1944, 1948), 6-time All-Star, 2 All-Braeland Teams.

SP David Cooling – 14-year career (217-149, 3.22 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 131 ERA+); 1 Satchel Paige Award (1941), 10-time All-Star.

3B Adam Ashley – 13-year career (.316/.374/.431, 43 HR, 699 RBI, 601 BB, 175 SB, 120 OPS+, 54.8 WAR); Rookie of the Year Award (1939), 10-time All-Star, 6 Ball Hawk Awards, 3 All-Braeland Teams.

-----------

Management Shakeups

May 5 –Pulberry Trolleys Hire Their Fourth Manager in Four Years

On April 16, 63-year old Luke Mitford retired, after just one season as Pulberry’s field manager. The rookie manager led the Trolleys to a 63-91 record and a 7th place finish in the Western League standings. But on May 5, the club made a splash when they announced his replacement: 46-year old veteran Ryo Ichikawa (561-519, .519%), the man who recently led the Embro Suns to the Eastern League Pennant and one victory shy of a United Cup Championship last season. Ichikawa managed the Suns for seven seasons, guiding them to three playoff appearances. Electing not to return to Embro following the end of this past season, Ichikawa signed on with the Trolleys for three seasons at $16,700 per annum. He is considered very personable and a tactician who always comes prepared.

-----------

May 11 – Sherburn Hires New General Manager

After 14 seasons as Sherburn’s first and only general manager, 58-year old Gareth Danior was shown the door. Despite his ‘excellent’ reputation, the Tigers reached the playoffs just twice and were five years removed from their last winning record. Assuming the reigns is 46-year Jack Clayton ($6,740, 1 yr.), a rookie in the United Leagues. He is said to highly favor prospects, hitting, loyalty and scouting.

-----------

May 12 – Embro Signs Rookie Manager

After long-time manager Ryo Ichikawa opted to depart, the Suns turned to a rookie, namely 55-year old Ashley Knuth ($5,540, 3 years) as their fourth manager in team history. He previously served as the Hespeler Stars’ bench coach under manager Carlton Stewart back in 1949-51. Low-key and laid back, Knuth is reported to favor prospects, defense and OBP.

-----------

June 5 – Stratford Hires New General Manager

The Barons cleaned house this off-season, jettisoning their bench coach, hitting coach, scouting director, team trainer and general manager. GM Robin Ash’s tenure ended after four seasons, with the Barons making the playoffs twice and boasting winning records each time. But with Stratford’s fortunes progressively fading, the club decided to make a whole-sale change. Enter 57-year old Kieran Sturtevant ($6,060, 1 yr.), who embarks on his first management assignment in the ULB. At his press conference, Sturtevant stated that he will not be afraid to wheel and deal in improving the club through trades. He also reputedly favors veterans.

-----------

August 8 – Wellington Athletics Sees Ownership Change

76-year old Seung-ryong Kim died after a long battle with an undisclosed illness. Taking over will be his only son Seung-ryong Kim Jr. While he worked closely with his father in managing the Athletics organization, Kim Jr. is expected to be much more hands off than Kim Sr., who had a reputation for meddling and being tight-fisted.

-----------

Trades and Signings

May 17:

The defending United Cup Champions Wolseley Unions were the big winners in free agency, signing 25-year old RHP Roberto Garza (54/54) from Costa Rica to a 1-year contract ($27,800).

Knee-jerk reaction: Garza will add depth to an already deep starting rotation that was third last season in ERA (3.55). The scouting report states that his best pitch is his forkball and can be counted on to generate groundballs and keep the ball in the park. He is also described as a middle-of-the-rotation starter and that is where he is slotted to start Spring Training – at the No. 3 spot.

-----------

July 17:

The Balmoral Giants and Hespeler Stars completed a two-player deal:

To Balmoral – 31-year old RHP Brent Nix (58/58)

To Hespeler – 24-year old minor leaguer CF Gerard Rains (35/48)

Knee-jerk reaction: Nix’s tenure with Hespeler was lackluster to say the least. In fact, the former 14th overall pick from 1939-40 has been struggling since he last pitched with Cobourg three seasons ago. Balmoral will be his fifth club and they will be looking to him to anchor their bullpen. While the starting rotation was tops in the West last season, the Giants’ bullpen was rated fifth. As for the Stars, they’ve anointed 25-year old Rodney Gabrielson (64/64), a former 10th-overall pick from 1943-44, as their new stopper.

Rains has the potential to be an intriguing acquisition. A second-round pick from 1949-50, he has not progressed the way Balmoral expected him to and thus shipped him to Hespeler. But Rains has speed to burn and is outstanding defensively anywhere in the outfield. If his offense can develop a little more, he may challenge for a regular spot in the major league lineup.

-----------

July 23:

The Cambria Cannons and Pulberry Trolleys consummated a three-player deal:

To Cambria – 32-year old RF Jarod Dwyer (35/35)

To Pulberry – 30-year RHP Alexander Ellacott (41/41) and 23-year old RHP Flanagan Tyers (41/42).

Knee-jerk reaction: With this trade, the ‘John Oldknow (32/80) era’ has officially begun in Pulberry. Oldknow takes over right field permanently, thus making Dwyer, a former 3rd overall pick from 1941-42 expendable. The three-time all-star is now relegated to Cambria’s bench. He is clearly on the downside of his career.

In return of his services, the Trolleys regain Ellacott, who was originally selected by Pulberry in the 3rd-round of the 1940-41 amateur draft and pitched for them for five seasons before being shipped to Hespeler for C Gareth Kody, who is still with the club. Ellacott struggled with Cambria, as he has the past four seasons, so its not entirely clear what positive impact he can make for Pulberry. Nevertheless, he is considered their ace going forward, giving you an idea of the state of the Trolleys’ pitching staff.

Tyers, a former 8th-round pick is a future starter who is decidedly average, with below average movement (fastball, slider, changeup: all 50/50). He is a long-shot to make a major league roster, but with Pulberry he may have a chance.

-----------

August 14:

The Balmoral Giants and Sherburn Tigers agreed to a three-player deal:

To Balmoral – 31-year old 1B Won-ho Kim (43/43) and 22-year old CF Harold Sparkes (20/37)

To Sherburn – 28-year old 3B Viera Kewini (43/48)

Knee-jerk reaction: Essentially some deck chair shuffling made by both clubs, although Kewini has perhaps the best chance of making an impact. Kewini takes over the hot corner from the platoon of 28-year old Fraser Rae (35/36) and 31-year old Otton Overbeek (30/30) who were no longer effective. Kewini is a former 5th-round pick who showed some promise last season with Balmoral. He is aggressive at the plate with very good defensive skills and a terrific throwing arm.

Kim meanwhile moves from centerfield with Sherburn to first base with Balmoral, where he should be more comfortable defensively. He is a great base-stealer with above-average strike zone recognition. Nevertheless, scouts feel that he is merely a borderline starter.

Sparkes is a former second-round pick now with his third organization. He is primarily a depth player with a decent bat, great speed and terrific defense in the outfield. But right now, only a plethora of injuries could see him move into a starting lineup.

-----------

The War Gained chart nicely sums up how quiet the off-season was, at least in terms of player movement. For most teams, their rise or fall in the chart was largely the result of players retiring after the season, rather than impact players being traded. Most player movement was seen through the Rule 5 draft. AI trading is currently set to ‘average’, so perhaps that will have to be re-evaluated if that trend continues.

But in the meantime, the teams are gearing up for the 15th annual Coconut Leagues, set to begin on August 27.

Wow!

reds1, you are a blast!... a real hep cat... the ginchiest! (Kookie on 77 Sunset Strip TV Show in the 50s)... I go ape over the United Leagues of Braeland!... it's out of sight, man... dig me?

This is some kind of dynasty!... in my humble opinion, it may be arguably the best one of all-time!

My favorite all-time dynasties are the fabled and defunct Laseron Baseball Association and DreamTeams' long-running Metro League.

Really think your graphics are superb... they look so professional... really love your Braeland City Reporter newspaper banner and your Offseason banner... you even included the price of the newspaper and the weather forecast on the front page... items like this make your dynasty very special to me.

Plus you have a great map of Braeland!

And including world history based on real events is truly exceptional.

Who says you can't have it all?

May reds1 and his great United Leagues of Braeland live long and prosper.

Thank you for a "neato keen" dynasty... that's 50s slang for something very special.

Neither do I, Tyke!

Hey, all you groovy guys and gals, here a blast from the past from Edd Byrnes and Connie Stevens... he was the cool cat Kookie on the old 50s TV Show "77 Sunset Strip" and she played cute and cuddly chick Cricket on "Hawaiian Eye" TV series.

My apology to reds1 for totally destroying the sanctity of his fine dynasty league.

And now back to the serious business of baseball.

No apologies necessary, Eugene! I'm totally blown away by your and Tyke's generous words. Thank you so much!

I'd like to do more stories on the Royal Family, but I never thought I would get this far in the dynasty, so coming up with some new ideas is taxing my little brain.

Although in the past I thought of myself as a 'word' guy, I'm really a visual person - thus I grasp things better if you 'show me a picture'. So I like adding graphics to my posts as I personally enjoy it more than if I simply did text. But that's just me.

It sounds as though I'm a little bit younger than you, as 77 Sunset Strip and Hawaiian Eye were a little before my time. Thus, I still have some hair (although it is receding!)

My memory cells kicked in around the time of The Flintstones, Laugh-In, Get Christie Love! and Get Smart (albeit reruns).

So in that spirit:

Ziz is KOAS - Ve don't 'Ginch' here!

It’s finally arrived – Opening Day! The 16 clubs have wrapped up the exhibition season and set their sights and rosters for Day 1 of the 1951-52 campaign. The general consensus of this year’s Coconut Leagues was that they were pleasantly competitive. No team won more than 19 games or lost fewer than 12 during the 30-game tourney. Whether that’s a harbinger of things to come for the regular season, however, remains to be seen.

But it did feel that the competition was keener than in previous years. That was most evident with a late free agent signing made by a team that’s not usually known for making aggressive player acquisitions: the Pulberry Trolleys.

-----------

Free Agent Signing

September 12:

The Pulberry Trolleys sign 21-year old LHP Ramón Castro (51/53) from Columbia for $59,000.

Knee-jerk reaction: The Trolleys ultimately prevailed in securing Castro, a solid, young arm. Castro is projected to have good movement and control that should allow him to throw all four of his pitches for strikes. Scouts consider him a future No. 2 starter, but Pulberry has already installed him as their new ace. He is rated as the Trolley’s No. 3 overall prospect and his signing has catapulted Pulberry’s farm system into the No. 1 spot. His work in the Coconut Leagues was limited due to the late signing. In all, he pitched in two games, going 8.0 IP, 1-1, 12 HA, 1 HR, 5 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 5.63 ERA, 1.88 WHIP.

-----------

Eastern League Results

---------

The Stratford Barons are projected to run away with the East, based mainly on their pitching staff. The Barons have three starters appearing in the Top 10: RHP Magtanggol Jaojoco (58/63), RHP Bill Wolf (48/54) and RHP Ted Smith (44/52). If the prediction holds true, then Stratford will appear to have survived the lost of their two long-time pitching stalwarts: 43-year old Ryan Borden and 41-year old LHP Joel Fearn (47/47). Borden retired at the end of last season and Fearn is nearing the end of his – although he is not ready to call it quits just yet. He enters the 1951-52 season as Stratford’s No. 4 starter and career leader in seven pitching categories, such as wins (243), complete games (312) and strikeouts (1620).

On offense, the ageless Jake Walker is projected to continue being ageless. Walker enters his 15th season as the United Leagues’ leader in Hits (2383), triples (185) and walks (1281).

One team looking to break out of the second division after three seasons are the Queensland Eagles. If successful, they too will appear to do it on the strength of three starters: RHP Logan Belsey (66/77), RHP Stiofan Micklethwait (56/68) and RHP Pi-ao Quian (54/54). Belsey is also looked to for breaking the season record for strikeouts with 229. The record was set last season by Belsey, with 203.

Western League Results

---------

No surprises this year, as the Wolseley Unions and Fort Richmond Generals are projected to dominate the West once again. But there are a couple of other teams that could make a push.

The Hespeler Stars enjoyed a particularly strong spring training and may parlay that into a wild card appearance. Sophomore CF John McMurray (49/62) and three-season veteran 2B Vic Lewis (49/50) are predicted to have big seasons and lead the offense, while RHP Stephen Tindall (52/53) and LHP Larry Kovnats (50/53) are projected to do the same for the rotation. Tindall looks to build upon last year, his best in four seasons, while Kovnats really needs to cut down on his walk rate if he’s ever going to develop into a true ace.

The Pulberry Trolleys are another team that may be ready to finally challenge for a spot in the first division in the not-too-distant future. Three players are projected to make some noise: CF Cooper Tyson (61/73), SS Francis Jones (59/59) and LF Ellis Dibble (56/59). Tyson is looking to build on his rookie season, where he finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting and quickly established himself as one of the best defensive outfielders in the ULB. Meanwhile, Jones is looking to regain the form that he displayed during his 1949-50 all-star season. The three-year veteran Dibble has quietly improved with each passing season. And that doesn’t include rookie RF John Oldknow (32/80 – .275/.345/.431, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 5 BB, 11 SO in spring training) and IF/OF Aiden Thirkettle (35/80 – .338/.394/.523, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 6 BB, 15 SO in spring training). Both showed promise in spring training. Thirkettle will start the season in AAA but may not remain there for very long. Add the acquisition of LHP Ramón Castro mentioned at the outset and things may finally be looking up for the long-suffering club.

Eastern League: One Jumbled Mess

--------

Offense: .274/.343/.409 (AVG/OBP/SLG – 3rd/7th/4th)
Pitching: 4.45/4.16/6.05 (Team ERA/Starters’ ERA/Bullpen ERA – 6th/2nd/8th)
Defense: .700 (3rd)

After a pair of last-place finishes, the Queensland Eagles find themselves in top spot in the East after the first two months – but just barely. The Eastern League is a model of mediocrity in the early going. Only five games separate the penthouse from the basement, and the Eagles as the top club are only three games above .500. In fact, if the Eagles were competing in the Western League, they would find themselves merely in fourth place. But there have been some outstanding individual performances throughout the East, and that certainly includes Queensland.

25-year old Rod Dennis (.369/.427/.611, 12 HR, 44 RBI, 21 BB, 2.2 WAR), who finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting last season is enjoying a tremendous start offensively, either leading or tied for the lead in eight offensive categories. 25-year old 1B Ryan Conisford (.296/.370/.458, 6 HR, 27 RBI, 24 BB, 1.5 WAR) is also enjoying a fine sophomore season, one year after finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting.

The pitching staff has for the most part been up and down in the early going. 26-year old RHP Logan Belsey (6-3, 4.15 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 2.80 FIP) started off strong, winning Pitcher of the Month honors in October, but struggled a bit in November (2-3, 5.52 ERA, 1.43 WHIP). But his potential to be a dominant ace remains enormous and continues to dominate as a strikeout artist. Belsely leads the League in strikeouts, K/9IP and K/BB by comfortable margins. He is currently rated as the No. 1 pitcher in the ULB. Queensland’s most consistent pitcher in the first two months has been No. 3 starter 27-year old RHP Tyler Gissing (4-5, 2.77 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 3.37 FIP). The former 2nd-round pick from 1946-47 is off to his best start in four seasons and leads the East in ERA.

Player of the Week Awards:

October 22 – LF Rod Dennis (.478, 11 H, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 6 R)
November 12 – LF Rod Dennis (.600, 15 H, 1 HR, 5 RBI)

Current Injuries:

RHP Bartolo Sánchez – October 10 – dislocated shoulder. Out for: 3 more months.
RHP Quentin Goldsmith – October 30 – ulnar nerve entrapment. Out for: 3 more months.
RHP Gael Yule – November 10 – sprained elbow. Out for: DtD, unknown.
RHP Tyler Gissing – November 30 – sore back. Out for: DtD, 2 days.

--------

Offense: .262/.361/.378 (7th/1st/8th)
Pitching: 4.22/4.19/4.45 (2nd/3rd/6th)
Defense: .697 (Tied at 6th)

The Stratford Barons are the only Eastern League team that has avoided enduring a sub-.500 month thus far, but just barely. Like Queensland, they have not been terrible, but overall the team has been rather lackluster.

That cannot be said for 21-year old sophomore CF Sherwin Carasig (.344/.410/.566, 8 HR, 33 RBI, 24 BB, 2.7 WAR). He is one of the hottest players in the Eastern League this year. 32-year old C Aaron Skidmore (.296/.459/.454, 5 HR, 30 RBI, 46 BB, 2.5 WAR) is also off to a fast start after enduring a bit of down year last season.

The pitching staff got off to a rocky start in October but picked things up a bit in November to help the club remain near the top of the standings. 25-year old RHP Magtanggol Jaojoco (6-6, 3.25 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 3.50 FIP) has been the most consistent and in fact enjoying strong start. He leads the East with four shutouts, including a 6-hit shut-out one on Opening Day against the Downie Chiefs. He also leads the League in games started (tied with Embro’s Carl McBroom) and innings pitched.

Noteworthy:

October 15 – CF Sherwin Carasig entered the new season with a 6-game hitting streak. He extended that to 20 games before Braeland City’s RHP Freddie Trerise stopped him in a game at Stratford’s Bosworth Field. Carasig went 0-4 in the Barons’ 3-0 loss to the Monarchs.

Current Injuries: None.

--------

Offense: .276/.351/.421 (2nd/2nd/2nd)
Pitching: 4.62/4.28/5.47 (7th/4th/7th)
Defense: .701 (2nd)

The Braeland City Monarchs enjoyed a strong October, leading the East by a full game on November 2 but then stumbled, going on a 9-game losing streak before recovering somewhat and finishing the rest of November 7-6. But that has left them scuffling along with the rest of the East.

The starting lineup has been doing its part, however, as it has been one of the top offenses in the East in the early going. 26-year old 2B Patrick Lidgate (.297/.409/.538, 11 HR, 32 RBI, 35 BB, 2.3 WAR) and 27-year old 1B Dean Witherden (.324/.365/.437, 4 HR, 28 RBI, 16 BB, 1.6 WAR) continue to lead the club, but they have been joined by a couple of unexpected players.

21-year old RF Aidan Trembath (.379/.455/.638, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 8 BB, 1.1 WAR – 46/68) and 27-year old SS Kai Klein (.270/.356/.473, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 11 BB, 1.1 WAR – 48/50), both rookies, got into the starting lineup in November and are impressing the top brass. Trembath, a 15th overall pick from 1948-49 and Braeland City’s top offensive prospect, began getting more regular starts in rightfield at the expense of 30-year old Luca Bewick (.286/.363/.448, 4 HR, 22 RBI, 15 BB, 0.7 WAR) in early November and is now regularly batting 5th against RHP. Kai Klein, a free-agent signing from Germany back in June, was invited to Spring Training as a non-roster player and made the team. With the loss of SS Simon Flatt for the rest of the season, Klein has taken over the position and is more than holding his own.

The pitching has been a mixed bag to say the least, particularly the bullpen. No. 1 starter 30-year old RHP Okura Suzuki (6-4, 3.78 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 3.43 FIP) and No. 2 starter 30-year old RHP Robin Medellin (6-4, 3.44 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 4.62 FIP) are the only pitchers pitching with any consistency in the first couple of months.

Player of the Week Awards:

October 8 – LF Jesús Rodríguez (.476, 10 H, 3 HR, 9 RBI)
November 5 – RF Aidan Trembath (.667, 10 H, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R)

Noteworthy:

October 22 – The top pitching performance thus far in the East was handed in by RHP Robin Medellin, who 1-hit the Stratford Barons, leading the Monarchs to a convincing 6-0 victory at Kings Park in Braeland City. Medellin went 9.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. He threw 105 pitches on the day, 62 for strikes and finished with a score of 89. The Monarchs’ back-up catcher, Jorge Valentín (.262/.415/.571, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 10 BB, 0.6 WAR), did the most damage on offense, hitting a 3-run homer in the 3rd inning against Stratford’s RHP Bill Wolf.

Current Injuries:

SS Simon Flatt – November 21 – broken bone in elbow. Out for: 4 more months.
RHP Danilo Narvaez – November 25 – tender shoulder. Out for: DtD, 1 more day.

--------

Offense: .261/.337/.410 (8th/8th/3rd)
Pitching: 4.00/4.05/3.77 (1st/1st/3rd)
Defense: .697 (Tied at 6th)

The Embro Suns are just a game back of the wild card based largely on their pitching staff. However, the offense is not as bad as it appears on the surface. They lead in extra-base hits and home runs, but more significantly, the Suns are easing in a couple of promising rookies that should give the offense a boost as the season progresses.

23-year old rookie Moromao Nakagawa (.282/.386/.407, 4 HR, 23 RBI, 36 BB, 1.1 WAR) has taken over third base from 26-year old Keon-chae Cho (.281/.335/.433, 7 HR, 35 RBI, 16, 1.5 WAR), who now covers second base. That shifted 24-year old Napana Mamo (.210/.289/.383, 6 HR, 24 RBI, 24 BB, 0.3 WAR) to first base at the expense of Suns’ icon 37-year old Jim Friend (.125/.417/.292, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 12 BB, 0.0 WAR), who has been reduced to facing only LHP. That is a shame, as Friend is still rated highly by the scouts (60/60), although he did miss most of the spring training due to a hamstring strain.

An injury to long-time shortstop 28-year old Rafael De La Cruz (.384/.432/.507, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 7 BB, 0.9 WAR) has given 21-year old rookie Kieron Bradridge (.278/.313/.473, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 9 BB, 1.7 WAR) a chance to start full-time. Bradridge and Nakagawa have taken advantage of their regular starts, as both earned Rookie of the Month honors to start the season.

Embro’s rotation remains the same as last season. However, 25-year old LHP Carl McBroom (3-5, 3.97 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 3.43 FIP) has now taken over the No. 1 spot from 32-year old RHP Aaron Saunderson (4-5, 4.27 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 4.84 FIP), who now pitches from the No. 3 spot. That said, No. 2 starter, 32-year old LHP Arthur Bence (7-3, 3.33 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 3.10 FIP) has been the most effective Suns pitcher thus far.

Current Injuries:

SS Rafael De La Cruz – November 11 – fractured hand. Out for: 2 more weeks.
RF José Maldonado – November 30 – back stiffness. Out for: DtD, 1 more week.

--------

Offense: .272/.344/.380 (4th/6th/7th)
Pitching: 4.23/4.45/3.52 (3rd/6th/2nd)
Defense: .698 (Tied at 4th)

Last season, the Wellington Athletics were decidedly ‘unlucky’, as they finished the year with a Pyt. Record of 86-68, a difference of -12. If they had finished anywhere close to that record, they would have seriously challenged for a playoff spot. However, while they are still very much in the hunt as is the rest of the League, the team does not carry quite the same vibe as they did last year. A lot of that has to do with a pitching staff that appears to have come back down to earth. One of the top units in the East last year, the rotation has been largely lackluster this year.

26-year old RHP Troy Conlin (4-4, 3.59 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 4.17 FIP) has been the most consistent over the first two months, although 31-year old journeyman RHP Ian Peter (5-3, 4.24 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 3.97 FIP) did pick up his game in November (3-2, 3.48 ERA).

24-year old LF Matthew Floyd (.290/.378/.495, 5 HR, 42 RBI, 30 BB, 1.8 WAR) continues to lead the Wellington offense, winning Batter of the Month honors in November. But he has been joined by 24-year old RF Harvey Thornber (.346/.350/.447, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 0 BB, 1.2 WAR). Thornber, a former 5th overall pick from 1946-47, has not lived up to his high draft selection. But he is off to best start in his uneven 4-year career.

Other starters meanwhile have struggled. Case in point is 25-year old 2B Vaiga Bultarro (.233/.295/.316, 2 HR, 20 RBI, 18 BB, -0.1 WAR), who enjoyed a break-out season last year (.300/.354/.434, 3.7 WAR). Alas, it appears last season was an outlier, as he has regressed to his former mediocre play.

Current Injuries: None.

--------

Offense: .266/.350/.389 (5th/3rd/6th)
Pitching: 4.41/4.71/3.48 (5th/7th/1st)
Defense: .698 (Tied at 4th)

The Brunswick Legends’ fortunes are essentially the same as it was last season: under-performing rotation, great bullpen and not enough support for their offensive stalwart, Stuart Bentham.

The rotation was never expected to be great, but the loss of frequently injured ace 34-year old RHP Kelvin Hutchinson (4-0, 3.72 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 4.37 FIP) doesn’t help. Hutchinson only started one game for Brunswick last season due to a torn UCL after being traded from the Stratford Barons in January. Now he is out for over 6 weeks due to back injury. On the plus side, 26-year old rookie RHP Rob Backhouse (2-1, 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 3.63 FIP), an 8th-round pick from 1947-48, has performed well in his three starts so far in Hutchinson’s stead. In the bullpen, 29-year old RHP Lao Chen (2-3, 8 SV, 3.75 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, 3.06 FIP) continues to be the top stopper in the United Leagues. But the staff received another boost when 23-year old rookie RHP Eddie Stannard (1-1, 2 SV, 1.62 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 4.05 FIP – 50/63) joined its ranks this season. The former 2nd-round pick from 1949-50 has the potential to be starter in the future.

The offense continues to be led by 35-year old 1B Stuart Bentham (.368/.449/.536, 6 HR, 40 RBI, 29 BB, 1.6 WAR – 80/80) but the rest of the lineup has struggled to support him. That may be changing, as 23-year old rookie C Robert Kersey (.296/.364/.513, 7 HR, 29 RBI, 17 BB, 1.7 WAR – 57/75) is off to an impressive start. The 3rd overall pick from 1949-50 currently bats in the No. 3 spot against RHP – ahead of Bentham.

Player of the Week Awards:

October 15 – 1B Stuart Bentham (.500, 14 H, 1 HR, 6 RBI)

Current Injuries:

RHP Kelvin Hutchinson – November 2 – herniated disc. Out for: 5 more days.
CF Cameron Osmotherley – November 17 – strained posterior cruciate ligament. Out for: 3 more days.

--------

Offense: .266/.347/.390 (6th/4th/5th)
Pitching: 4.77/5.12/3.91 (8th/8th/4th)
Defense: .702 (1st)

The bottom appears to have fallen out for the Downie Chiefs, as the rotation is now a shell of its former self and the lineup is not as formidable as it was a couple of seasons ago when they won the United Cup. Still, no one is running away with the East. So if the Chiefs can shore things up, they can be right back in the thick of it.

Things look more promising on offense. 25-year old Dominic Dudding (.346/.418/.576, 10 HR, 38 RBI, 25 BB, 2.8 WAR) is off to another phenomenal start, while 25-year old CF Alfonso León (.286/.360/.452, 8 HR, 40 HR, 24 BB, 2.3 WAR) is on pace to match his award-winning season last year. He got off to relatively slow start last year before erupting in December. But a couple of sophomores could join them as offensive powerhouses. 24-year old RF Connor Bing (.314/.395/.590, 5 HR, 21 RBI, 14 BB, 1.7 WAR – 70/75) really picked things up in November (.352/.435/.741, 1.176 OPS). 23-year old 3B Louis Revill (.265/.318/.348, 2 HR, 25 RBI, 12 BB, -0.0 – 47/80) continues to be an enigma. The 4th overall pick from 1947-48 got off to an extremely slow start in October but awoke in November. Downie has been patient with him though, and that no doubt is the correct approach.

The pitching is much more of a concern, as 29-year old RHP Kelii Pelanekelina (3-6, 5.75 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 5.28 FIP) and 32-year old RHP Joong Ling (3-6, 6.36 ERA, 1.83 WHIP, 5.55 FIP) have been downright awful. That is alarming, as both were excellent the previous two seasons, although both were ineffective in last season’s Eastern League Pennant Series. Right now, only No. 3 starter, 35-year old LHP Gavin Hewat (4-3, 3.15 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 3.49 FIP), is pitching effectively. And their closer, 34-year old RHP Carl Luscombe (7-1, 5 SV, 2.90 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 4.83 FIP) currently leads the team in wins.

Player of the Week Awards:

November 26 – RF Connor Bing (.500, 9 H, 3 HR, 16 RBI)

Current Injuries: None.

--------

Offense: .283/.347/.422 (1st/5th/1st)
Pitching: 4.37/4.42/4.17 (4th/5th/5th)
Defense: .684 (8th)

It’s a familiar story with the Cobourg Red Stockings, as the club is still seeking a consistent pitching staff to support their steady starting lineup. Things were looking promising at the end of last where the team just missed out on the wild card. But except for newly installed ace, 23-year old LHP Bill Budd (4-5, 3.52 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 4.35 FIP), the rotation took a serious step back in November. One bright spot is 33-year old RHP Max Dunston (4-3, 2.13 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 2.97 FIP). After struggling the past four seasons, the former starter finally seems comfortable pitching out of the bullpen.

The offense continues to rival all other teams in the United Leagues for its consistency. That is no doubt due to 29-year old 3B Alexander Tolmie (.341/.424/.571, 12 HR, 36 RBI, 30 BB, 2.8 WAR) and 25-year old CF Raymond Williams (.332/.422/.544, 5 HR, 34 RBI, 33 BB, 2.6 WAR) enjoying incredible starts to the season once again. 30-year old SS John Medley (.361/.419/.493, 2 HR, 29 RBI, 20 BB, 8 SB, 1.6 WAR) is off to a fast start once again. However, Cobourg’s lead-off hitter fell into a slump last December, so we’ll just have to see what happens this time around.

Player of the Week Awards:

October 29 – CF Raymond Williams (.407, 11 H, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 7 R)
November 19 – SS John Medley (.519, 14 H, 9 RBI, 6 R)

Noteworthy:

October 26 –3B Alexander Tolmie is on fire to start the season and that was no more apparent than in Cobourg’s 9-0 thrashing over the Queensland Eagles. He went 5 for 5, driving in 2 runs and scoring 4 times.
Tolmie singled in the 1st, 4th and 6th innings, then hit two solo home runs off Bruno Skinner – in the 7th and 9th innings – to cap off his scorching day.

Current Injuries: None.

Edit: Yes, I'm using OOTP20.

Those are found right on the League home page. I use the snipping tool to grab a view and then edit the image in Photoshop to 'squeeze' it a bit, as the stat screens are a little wider than necessary on my screen. Below are a couple of screen shots to show what I mean:
