Another fight, another belt

Adrien Broner just keeps collecting them. Broner already won the WBA JWW title earlier this year but last night went after Brandon Rios & his WBO 140 lb version.

In a give & take affair between 2 fighters @ the top of their games, AB ekes out a 15UD, 143-142 on all 3 cards.

No KD's in the fight & AB won the PL battle: 426 (34%) to 307 (28%). Brandon's right eye was swollen (orange) but aside from that, neither fighter had any injuries.

Iran Barkley made an impressive 1st defense of his WBO SMW belt with a 1 punch, left hook KO of the fearsome Mexican puncher, Francisco Sierra, @ 2:54 of the 10th.

Iran dropped Sierra with a hood & cross in the previous rounds before ending the fight in the 10th. Iran had out-punched/worked Sierra: 304 (33%) to 113 (17%).

The judge from Argentina had Iran up 88-82, but the 2 other judges had a much closer fight, 86-84 (US) & 85-85 (South Africa).

Iran is now 6-1 (3 KO's) @ 168 & Sierra's also 6-1 (6 KO's).

New IBF JWW champ, Ike Quartey, agreed to go to Puerto Rico to make his 1st defense against what he assumed was the faded Edwin Rosario.

Inspired by his countrymen, the post prime Edwin gave as good as he got & a combo in the 6th sent Ike down for a 9 count. Ike began the 7th with increased urgency as he tried to get Edwin out of there. A hard right cross from Ike appeared to shake up Edwin but he countered with an uppercut that sent Ike to the deck for the 2nd round in a row.

Ike was up @ a 5 count but this time Edwin didn't let Ike off the hook as he threw punches until the ref stepped in @ 2:21 of the 7th.

Edwin was up 198 (32%) to 156 (50%) in PL & on all 3 cards: 58-54 & 58-55 twice.

Carl Froch moved to 23-1 (14 KO's) with an impressive 1st title defense of his IBO SMW belt via a 15th TKO of the surprisingly game, Dyah Davis.

Davis stood & traded for the 1st 3 rounds with the strong British champ but eventually Froch's strength & power were just too much for the son of Howard Davis.

Dyah took a horrendous beating, hitting the deck 8 times before the ref stopped it in the 15th - far too late for many ringside observers.

The judges had it: 139-121, 138-121 & 139-120.

Froch had the PL edge: 468 (36%) to 204 (28%).

Dyah's left eye was red & close to closing from the repeated sledgehammer like rights he took from Froch all night long. In fact in the 15th, Carl shook his hand after appearing to hurt it from so much use in his 1st title defense.

One 0 had to go!

George Groves traveled to Sweden for a massive fight in Europe, taking on the unbeaten Badou Jack for the vacant WBA SMW strap.

Both fighters came in with 12-0 marks, Groves with 10 KO's to Jack's 9.

What appeared to be a pretty even fight going in was rather one sided as George's speed & boxing ability carried the day in a 15UD: 146-138, 146-139, 147-137.

A quick left hook in the 10th sent Jack to the canvas for a count of 4 but aside from that, no other KD's in the Groves boxing clinic out-landing Jack 466 (34%) to 239 (29%).

Noe Gonzalez Alcoba made the 1st defense of his IBF MW belt against what appeared to be on paper, an evenly matched opponent in Ghana's Sena Agbeko.

Noe easily dispatched the green Sena, dropping him 4 times en route to an 8th round left hook KO. He was up 68-61, 67-62 & 67-61 on the cards.

He may be stripped of his belt due to taking a voluntary defense as opposed to a mandatory. Noe won the belt from the rugged Roberto Santos due to a DQ in the 15th of Santos. Noe was up 132-131 on all 3 cards in that fight.

Jermain Taylor & Sergio Martinez met for the vacant IBF MW belt (since they stripped the champ for failing to face his mandatory) in a battle between two 10 rated fighters in Argentina.

Taylor's size & power appeared to be turning the tide in a close bout & about to take over until a quick hook from Sergio sent the American to the canvas for a 3 count. Sergio would not be denied & kept punching until the ref waived off the fight @ 2:19 of the 8th round.

2 judges had the fight even @ 67 each & the other judge had Jermain up 68-66.

Sergio was much more accurate with his punches landing 185 @ 52% while JT landed 168 @ 33%.

Sergio improves to 9-1 (6 KO's) @ 160 & JT's now 26-2 (26 KO's) @ MW. JT's 1st stoppage loss @ the weight, his other defeat by DQ.

Making the 4th defense of his WBO JMW title, Sechew Powell came to London to face England's Brian Rose.

Powell impressively & easily defended his belt with a 9th round TKO landing 45% of his punches to Rose's 27%.

Rose suffered his 1st defeat & Powell improved to 23-2.

WBC JWW champ, Ruslan Provodnikov, decided to postpone a defense of his 140 lb crown when a chance to take on newly crowned WBO WW champ (Joseph Makaringe) presented itself.

So Ruslan traveled to South Africa to pick up his 2nd world title with a 10th round TKO. JM's straight ahead style was made to order for the Russian hard man as Ruslan wore down the tough African over time. 2 hard right hand cross KD's (both for 8 counts) help to end matters as Ruslan's onslaught lead to the ref stepping in as Joseph started to go down again. Ruslan was up on 2 cards of the American judges (87-84 & 86-85) while the judge from Thailand had Joseph up 86-85. Ruslan out punched the champ 283 (43%) to 179 (33%). It was Ruslan's 2nd win @ 147 (2-0, 2 KO's) & Joseph is now 14-3-1.

UK Battle

England's Darren Barker sent Bradley Pryce back down to 154 with a 4th round TKO of the WBC Super Welter champ from Wales.

Barker made the 2nd defense of his WBA MW strap an easy one in the all UK affair. A right cross for a 9 count was the beginning of the end for Pryce in the 4th.

Travis Simms made the 10th defense of his IBO JMW title with a hard fought 15UD decision over Canelo Alvarez.

In a terrific fight, Simms was able to drop the Mexican star 3 times over the 15 round fight which helped secure the win. Simms won the PL battle as well: 328 (30%) to 302 (22%).

Judges had the fight 142-140, 143-139 & 144-140.

Simms is now 22-2-2 & Canelo dropped is 2nd straight fight, 8-2. His other defeat earlier this year when he lost his WBC title to Bradley Pryce due to a 2nd round cut TKO.

WBC/IBF HW unification

Chris Byrd gave Roy Jones his only loss @ HW with a 7th round cut TKO win years ago. Byrd had just won the IBF HW belt & Roy was his 1st defense.

Since that time, Byrd had made 8 additional title defenses & Roy had become the WBC champ & made 4 title defenses of his own.

So with something to gain, Byrd agreed to a rematch. Aside from a quick right hook in the 10th for a flash 1 count KD, not much else went right for Byrd this time.

Roy Jones put the finishing touches on a fight he controlled most of the night with a combo that ended matters @ 1:17 of the 15th.

Roy had out punched Byrd: 330 (37%) to 191 (32%) & also had control on the cards: 136-131 twice & 138-129.

Jones now 14-1 @ HW while Byrd suffered his 1st loss ever is now 23-1.

Byrd and Jones as long time heavyweight champions - is it a particularly weak weight class?

Yes it is Bob, to be honest I've sort of ignored that class for a while now too. Either the WBC or IBF will now strip Jones so I can start having more bouts in that class. They won't be elite fighters but I can set up some good bouts for the title with guys like Fury, Wilder, Stieverne, Mormeck, & Chisora, etc. fighting for a vacant belt.

I sort of lost interest with the Klitschko's being so dominant.

Things started well for former MW champ Cory Spinks when an uppercut to open the fight gave defending WBC MW champ Gennady Golovkin a terrible gash over 1 of his eyes. Cory went for broke & then missed with a big overhand left only to be on the receiving end of a GGG counter hook which ended matters @ 2:03 of round 1.

It was GGG's 2nd title defense & he's now 18-0.

Spinks drops to 10-2-1 @ 160, his only other MW loss due to cuts when he lost his WBA MW belt in 2010.

Danny Garcia wanted to impress in his 1st title defense of his WBA JWW crown so he chose Tim Coleman as his opponent.

Tim had lasted 12 rounds before being stopped by WBO champ, Mike Alvarado, so Danny intended to look more impressive.

Tim never got that memo & dropped Garcia in the 4th for a count of 4.

It wasn't until the 13th round that Danny's power took over, a shot to Tim's liver dropping him for a count of 9. Tim hit the deck again in the 14th when Danny's left hook sent him there. And then 2 more times in the 15th when the fight was stopped @ 2:38 of the round.

Garcia was up 135-128 & 134-129 twice on the cards & also 433 to 310 in PL - both landing @ a 27.1% clip.

Thomas Damgaard made the 12th defense of his WBC WW title with a 10th round cut TKO over Shawn Porter in Denmark.

It's unfortunate such a great action fight had to end early due to a cut. When the end came, Thomas was up 240 to 183 in PL & ahead on the cards: 87-84 & 88-83 twice.

It was Porter's 3rd fight @ WW (most of his fights @ 154) & Damgaard improved to 19-1-1 (17 KO's) @ 147.

Now Thomas adds Porter to his list that includes impressive KO/TKO wins over Amir Khan (@ 140) & Andre Berto as well.

Darren Barker planned to cap this summer with bookend title defenses against fellow Brits. In June, Barker blew away the WBC Super Welter champ - Bradley Pryce, in 4 rounds.

The UK's Frank Grant (a full blown MW) turned out to be a much sturdier opponent & in the end, won the WBA MW belt with a 1 punch, right hook KO @ 1:09 of the 8th round.

Barker was busier, landing 186 (41%) to Grant's 162 (29%).

Grant was ahead with the judges: 68-66, 67-66 & 68-65.

WBC Super Lightweight champ, Ruslan Provodnikov, continues to impress fight after fight. In the 2nd defense of this belt, Ruslan traveled to England to fight Ashley Theophane.

In a typical Ruslan like performance, the Russian hard man just wore down the perky Brit & 3 KD's (a cross, upper & rib shot) finally ended matters @ 2:35 of the 8th with a TKO.

Both fighters went out looking for a KO in the 8th & Ruslan got his 12th stoppage @ 140 to improve to 13-0.

The 2 US judges had Ruslan up 69-64 & 68-65 but surprisingly the Australian judge had Ashley up, 67-66.

Later this year Ruslan plans to move up to 147 to make the 1st defense of his WBO WW strap he won earlier this year.
