Real life stuff: Known for his 50-ounce bat, slugger Mule Suttles is known as the all-time Negro League home run leader with 237, 13 more than runner-up Josh Gibson. *On Deck - 1937 MLB Batting Leaders*

Real life stuff - Outfielder Guy Curtright played nine seasons in the minors after graduating from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University) in 1934. After playing for the St. Paul Saints in 1942, he joined the Chicago White Sox the next year. In his first big league year, he set a rookie record with a 26 game hitting streak. *On Deck - 1937 MLB Pitching Leaders*

Real life stuff - In 14 seasons with the Homestead Grays, Ray Brown became one of the great stars of Negro League baseball, leading the team to eight pennants in one nine-year span. His vast repertoire of pitches included sinkers, sliders and even knuckleballs, but his curve was his go-to offering. *On Deck - 1937 post season*

Real life stuff: Outfielder Emil Mailho played briefly for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1936 Athletics but is better known as a longtime member of the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League. He played 17 years in professional baseball, with a minor league batting average of .318. He could also run - he stole 52 bases in 1933. He acquired a nickname "Fast Mail Mailho". *On Deck - 1937 World Series*

Real life stuff: Ray Brown ranks high in winning percentage among Negro League pitchers of all time. Throughout his career he had long winning streaks, including one stretch in 1936-1937 when he won 28 straight games over two seasons. *On Deck - 1938 HOF Inductees*

Real life Stuff: Benny Kauff ran afoul of the law in February 1920 for accepting stolen cars in a used car business he and his brother ran. Commissioner Kenesaw Landis banned him before the 1921 season got underway. He had played 8 seasons, hitting .311. *On Deck - Opening day rookie watch*

Real life stuff Dan Bankhead had impressive winning percentages in the Negro Leagues, minor leagues and major leagues. In 1947, Dan became the first African-American pitcher in the majors. Tex Sanner spent 17 years in the minor leagues, playing from 1941 to 1957. He was excellent with both the bat and on the mound, hitting over 200 home runs and winning over 130 games. *On Deck - 1937 Final Standings*

Real life stuff - Chino Smith contracted yellow fever in 1931, and succumbed to the affliction, failing to reach his 30th birthday. He was one of the most feared hitters in Negro League history. Baseball historians can only speculate about what Chino might have accomplished if he had enjoyed the luxury of a long career. *On Deck - 1938 batting leaders*

Real life stuff - Van Robays is credited with naming the "eephus pitch", developed by teammate Rip Sewell. In a 1942 exhibition game, Sewell threw a high, arching lob to the plate, and when the pitch finally arrived, Dick Wakefield swung and missed. After the game, manager Frankie Frisch asked Sewell what he called the pitch, and Van Robays replied "that's an eephus pitch." When Sewell asked him what an eephus was, Van Robays said, "Eephus ain't nuthin'." From then on, Sewell called it the eephus pitch. *On Deck - 1938 pitching leaders*

Real life stuff Tony Freitas played in the minor leagues and Major League Baseball, spending most of his career in the Pacific Coast League. He ranks fourth all-time in career minor league wins, with 342, and won the most of any southpaw. The most consistently outstanding pitcher in the Negro National League during the late 1930s and 1940s, Leon Day was a heady pitcher whose money pitch was his fastball. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. Ad Liska, a submarine pitcher, was in the majors for five years but spent most of his career as a star in the Pacific Coast League. He was the first major league player to come from the University of Nebraska. Sig Jakucki pitched three years for the St. Louis Browns (1936, and 1944-1945) and another seven years in the minor leagues. Dutch Henry pitched in the big leagues from 1921 to 1930. He also played on and off in the minors from 1921 to 1934. *On Deck - 1938 post season*

Real life stuff Leo "Muscle" Shoals crushed 362 home runs from 1937 to 1955 and he is often referred to as the Babe Ruth of minor league baseball...his career nearly came to an end in 1939 as he was shot in a barroom brawl, but he recovered to become one of the most renowned sluggers in minor league history...his greatest accomplishment came in 1949 when he hit 55 home runs, a Carolina League record which still stands. Al Unser – no kin to the race car drivers – played parts of four seasons in the major leagues during World War II...those 120 games were just one facet of a career – as player, minor-league manager, and scout – that began in 1933 and ended in the late 1970s. *On Deck - 1939 HOF Inductees*
