Tactic Mesh

I was curious, the addition of "suitability" for tactics is important but doesn't there also need to be suitability for offense & defense?

For example, does Tarasov (O) really mesh with Neutral Zone Trap (D) ?
The suitability for my team says 5 dots for each.

It would seem each offensive tactic should have certain defensive tactics that enhance it and vice versa.

Maybe I am thinking too much

It doesn't do that at the moment, but it's not a bad idea for the future. I'm thinking about adding some era-related adjustments, too, so modern teams aren't as effective with ancient tactics, and old historical teams aren't using systems that were developed half a century later.

It would seem logical that ancient tactics are not available to teams in 2020
And modern ones not available in 1940, not sure if they are since I have never played back that far.

But depending on the era, tactics should come and go.

I would like to be able custom create my own way of playing as opposed to having to choose. I sometimes find it frustrating that certain 3rd liners are restricted to more physical roles/getting penalties which I hate. Maybe he's skilled and I want to use him that way
I vote for my flexibility in my coaching.

Speaking of scoring across eras, do tactics play a role? For example, during a full history sim, scoring starts out really high then drops in the '20s. How much of that is the game forcing a reduction in goals, and how much is due to tactics? Does Firewagon Hockey give a boost to goals scored and allowed beyond what the players would achieve in a neutral environment? Does Ultraconservative Offense do the reverse?

It's a little complicated. Some of it is hardcoded into the game based on the actual goals-per-game of the year in question. But the player ratings of the era also have a significant influence - there just aren't a lot of defensive specialists in the smaller-roster era, for example, defencemen don't have as much diversity in style as they do now. Since the AI chooses tactics based on how their players fit them, that will tend to guide teams in that era in specific directions. And the tactics do have a significant effect on game performance - Firewagon Hockey does make the players get more offensive chances (all other things being equal), but also yield more chances to the opposing team.
