Question on Converting Derek Lowe to a Starter in 1998

I am playing with the 1998 Red Sox and Derek Lowe is a 24 year old very effective reliever. He has 4 great pitches but a stamina of 2 on a 2-8 scale. I have sent him down to Pawtucket, forced him to be a starting pitcher in hopes it will stretch him out and raise his stamina. I would like to bring him back up soon because the 1998 Red Sox need some rotation depth.

Will this work?

I am betting that it will not work. His stamina is too low to expect a raise up to a starter's stamina. Sorry.... just my opinion. You could try him and see how many innings he gives you.

Lowe should become a SP at some point, if you are using a 3 yr calculation. Usually i just give some guys a bump in STA so they are SP again or as they should be. I did this to Smoltz in 2005? He then won the Cy Young for the Yankees. I gave him a STA of 6 (1-10)

Lowe didn't start being a full time starter until 2002. If you have recalc on it should take care of itself in 2000 or so. If not, you deal with how he was imported. (Usually I ask OOTP to calc stamina across the entire career for this reason.)

The alternative is to artifically raise his stamina. Your game, your way, but I would find this gamey in 1998. Through the '97 season he appeared in 20 games, starting 9. Not too bad, but after 10 starts in 63 games in '98, he wouldn't start again until 3 starts in 2001.

He averaged a little over 3 innings/game in 97, 2 in 98. Stamina 2 on a 2-8 scale is probably about right - maybe 3.

Thank for the feedback guys. I always keep recalc off. I don't plan on editing him. I like for a new history to be made. I was trying to do it because the 1998 Red Sox already have a pretty strong bullpen but a very weak rotation. I have him down in Pawtucket now. Going to give him three starts down there and see how he does. If not, he is a very effective guy out of the pen. Maybe I can trade Tom Gordon for a starter and make Lowe my closer. I will keep you posted
