This Sheffield kid ...
I'm running a replay of the 1986 season.
As of May 11, 1986, the Milwaukee Brewers are basking in the glow of first place in the AL East with a 17-10 record. They are led by young slugger Gary Sheffield, who is leading the American League in home runs (13) and RBI (31) while batting a cool .306. Gary Sheffield is 17 year old! I've seen Ken Griffey Jr. debut in my historical sims at 16 years of age, so I guess this is not surprising. However, I do not remember Griffey putting up these kinds of numbers as a 16-17 year old, so it is impressive. I do think, for the sake of realism, this needs to be tweaked somehow. While there have been players historically who have debuted at such young ages, it has been extremely rare. However, giving Griffey and Sheffield's ratings (actual/potential), the computer assumes they are major league ready and I do not think it really accounts for their ages. At the same time, Sheffield is killing it in your sim, but would a real life 17-year old Gary Sheffield put up similar numbers in 1986? I do not think that would be the case.
At any rate, it is a good storyline! |
