What Happens to Free Agents w Rights Owned by Other Team?
If a player is available under Free Agency, and his rights are owned by another team, what happens if I make an offer to him?
- can he accept? - if he accepts, do I then need to negotiate for his rights? Trying to understand what happens to a free agent who's rights are owned by another team. Thanks! |

What you're talking about is what is known as a Restricted Free Agent. If you don't want to see them when searching, you can toggle them off.
Yes, you can offer them a contract, but the team holding his rights has the right to match the contract. If they don't, then you'll likely have to return some form of compensation right now. The game uses the NHL system, here's a link to what that looks like: https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017...pensation.html So make your offers carefully if you do. |
