Mantle blew it. He hit 320 right handed, his natural side, and 280 left handed. Typically RHBs give up 15 - 20 points against right side pitching. He gave up 40 by switch hitting.

I'd vote for Ted Williams myself. If he could play those war years as well, whew!

I think he's my pick as well. Not sure what this thread was about, really. Just get something going is my best bet.
That average...the approach...plenty of pop... Funny though, his certainly isn't the only way to hit. But he did a good job of describing what he did as well. Though I haven't read the book yet. I did see a photograph of him that "said 1000 words" as to how to generate a good swing

Probably apocryphal story about Ted Williams.
He's at bat and the pitch is thrown for a ball. The catcher turns around and begins to argue it was a strike. The umpire, takes off his mask, and says slowly "Son, if it was a strike, Mr. Williams would have swung at it." |
