Sal,
I was very interested in you rating of Andre Tessier, as I was born in Springfield and saw him fight. He was very strong, with Gene Fullmer type strength. Although he was a slugger, he like to work behind a very good left jab. In his fight with Rory Calhoun in NY, the Times commented on how good his jab was. His problem was if his jab was off then he did not perform as well as usual even thought he was basically a slugger. He had a descent chin; most of the fights he failed to last the distance were do to cuts. When he got his opponent on the ropes, he liked to use uppercuts to straighten them up. I don't believe he ever took the 10 count, although he was dropped on several occasions. Our Ratings differed in the following areas; You Me Control B/S 8/8 6/6 Chin kd/ko 4/3 3/2 Agg 8 7 End 8 9 Def/FS 2/2 1/1 DP/Cond 2/3 4/1 (He could pack them in at Holyoke Valley Arena) Int/Pro 6/10 5/10 FI/FO 2/2 3/1 Cu 1 2 CL 72 68 Foul Occ Sel Jabs 25/3 20.25/0 Hooks 14/3 21/.25/0 Cross 24/4 19.0/3.75 Comb 13/2 17.25/3.75 Up 10/2 14.75/0 P/CP 38/36 35/35 PM/OR 64/4 64/5 Your Jabs and hooks are more accurate as he didn't use a left hook that much. He tried to back up his opponents with a jab and then use right crosses and right uppercuts to finish the fight. Austin |

Thats great Austin, thank you. I think SAL is doing what I do, trying as best we can to rate some of these guys based on what we can find on them. It is always better to hear from someone that is more familiar with the boxer. If you have a rating that you feel is better for Tessier or anyone else we've done due to your intimate knowledge, please post it. More accurate is always better!
The only guy that I have had the benefit of seeing up close many many times is John Scully. I have to say that it is much tougher in my opinion to rate someone I know well because I never seem to be completely satisfied. I can let a lot slide when I don't know that much about a boxer.

Conn,
Thanks for the compliment. Sal's rating of Tessier might be better than mine, as I was a fan of Tessier. This might have clouded my judgement. One comment regarding Paul Cardoza, his weight was 186 lbs when he beat Eddie Owens. As a result his win was not for the New England Title. I believe that Cardoza won the title early in his career over Johnny Freitas. He lost the title to Owens in New Bedford. I was at the fight and shocked that the title changed hands in front of his home town fans. Austin |

I listed that fight as a win, not a title defense. But my sentance structure certainly leaves somehing to be desired.
Did you ever see Scully, he fought a number of times up around the Springfield area. I really miss the days when there where more pro bouts around here than just at the casinos. They used to be staged downstairs at the Civic Center, in the Sheridan, at the San Juan Center, et cetera in Hartford. Oh well, those days are gone for good I'm afraid.

ARTHUR CHAMBERS LW
Born - Salford, Lancashire, England 11(9)-1-2 (Boxrec shows 8(5)-0-1) Chambers was an early claimant to the Lightweight Championship of America. He fought in England through 1871 then traveled to the USA where he fought bouts with Johnny Clark, George Seddons and Billy Edwards. In 1876 or 1877, he had a finger amputated and had to retire from the ring, vacating his title. In 1879, Chambers came out of retirement to battle Johnny Clark for the title once more in Chippewa Falls, Canada. The bout was won by Chambers on a knockout in the 136th round! He retired for good following this epic battle with Clark.

Austin,
Thanks for the input on Tessier. I work basically on the stats I find on boxrec when I rate fighters and compare them with fighters already rated in the game. When I know some individual characteristics of a fighter, I try to incorporate those findings into the fighters ratings. I changed some of the ratings I had for Tessier according to your personal knowledge: KO 4 to 2, Cuts 1 to 3, END 8 to 9, DP 2 to 3 and Cond 4 to 2. Punches: Jabs....... 26.5 / 3 Hooks..... 12 / 1 Cross...... 20 / 2 Combo.... 13 / 1.5 Upper..... 18 / 3 I left his clinching at 72 because I feel he clinched more than he had ring movement. 68 leaves 10 points for ring movement. Thanks again for the help, the more accurate the better. Scot Last edited by SAL; 01-08-2005 at 01:31 PM. |

JOHNNY COILEY MW
Hometown - Cambridge, MA, USA 25(16)-7-1 Coiley put together a 23-0-1 record in his first three years as a pro with a few decent wins over the well traveled Mike Pusateri and Billy Marsh. The wheels fell off the wagon for Johnny as he lost 7 of his final 9 bouts including a pair of losses to Tony Licata. One final KO at the hands of 3-13-1 Nick Peoples pushed Coiley into retirement.

RONNIE COPELAND HW
Hometown - Greensboro, North Carolina, USA 8(7)-4-0 Copeland began his career by rolling over 7 stiffs. He has since gone 1-4-0 with his only vicorty comming over the winless Antonio Sloan. His last bout in November of 2004 was a loss to Caseny Truesdale (9-57-3). It would appear that Copeland's future is as an opponent.
