NOTE: 19 HW are joining the LBA in 1904 .... some old guys that I either missed or added since the start of 1903 .... I have split these 10HW - 9LHW so there will be a few more LHW. Nobody of real note went down to LHW

Javier,
I make a few fighters every year mainly because I like to have at least 4 new fighters in each division each year. I don't post them because I don't put any research into their ratings. I look at their record and decide what rating I want them. I look a little at who they beat and lost to. I look at if they won by KO or lost by KO and that is it. I don't test them at all. They have worked well for me but I wouldn't post them because it would be an insult to the guys on this board that work hard on their ratings. With that warning I will post this guy just for you. Aurelio Herrera, he finished 56-12. Lost twice to Abe Attell, beat Young Corbett. I rated him an 8. Boxrec lists him from US but I found several articles talking about him being the first notable Mexican who fought in California. So I put his nationality as Mexican. My grandfather was born in Madrid. Moved to Mexico City when he was 3 and lived there until his early 20's. He was a BW golden glove champ in the late 20's in Mexico City. I am 1/4 spanish so I will be rooting for this guy. I will make a note on here when he fights. I am still looking for a picture of him. Last edited by mh2365; 04-15-2007 at 07:09 PM. |

ROOT CITES LACK OF COMPETITION AFTER TITLE DEFENSE
January 15th, 1904
Jack Root (16-3) defended his LHW title for the 5th time with a TKO1 over #4 JH Brown (5-6 but rated a 1). Root claims Brown claims brown should of never been in the ring with him. "The better fighters in this division are too new to be sanctioned by the LBA for a title shot." Root denied rumors that he would move up to the HW division after the fight. Joe Choynski stated "Jack is the one who picks his fights if he thinks they are too easy then why doesn't he fight me again?" On the undercard LHW - Jack Dempsey NP TKO6 SP Stockton (Dempsey moving up to LHW for the win) LW - Patsy Sweeney UD10 Marty McCue (McCue moving up to LW for the loss) MW - Joe Butler TKO1 Dick Sandall LW - Andy Bowen MD6 Dave Holly (due to a scheduling error by the LBA Holly faced a non-club fighter in his beginner debut, the fight will not be expunged from his record but it will be noted for future reference) BW - Frankie Neil DRAW Joe Bowker (club fight) |

FEBRUARY 1904 TITLE FIGHTS
Three title fights in 1904 (sorry Javier, Herrera's # hasn't come up yet!)
HW - Jack Johnson drew a 10-25 ranked fighter and will take on #20 Billy Smith, who is actually 11-4. FW - Jimmy Briggs drew a 6-10 fighter and will take on Billy Whistler in what could be an all-time lowest rated championship fight ever. a 5 vs a 3. There are only 8 fw's ranked and Whistler is #6 on the PP rankings ... he is on 2-4-1 but has won his last 2 fights including an upset ofver LW Jack McAuliffe. Although Jack was DQ'd in that fight. BW - Terry McGovern drew the top ranked fighter scheduled to fight this month and that was #3 George Dixon who is 9-3. McGovern KO8 Dixon in the original BW Title fight on 11-3-1902. |

JOHNSON CRUISES TO HIS 4TH TITLE DEFENSE
February 5, 1904
Jack Johnson (15-1) wasted little time dictating how this fight would go when he dropped Billy "The Australian" Smith (11-5) in the opening minutes of teh bout. Smith hung on and faught galantly the rest of the fight. He was clearly overmatched and only took the 5th round from the champ. But he didn't run and stood in there giving himself a slugger's chance. He was cut over the right eye in the 4th and his left eye started to swell shut in the 8th. Referee Raul Caiz, stopped the bout in the 12th when he felt the swelling was too bad to continue. Markus, sitting ringside, and I had it 109-99. The official judges ruled the bout 110-99/109-99/108-100 On the undercard MW - Stanley Ketchel UD8 Mike Donovan (Ketchel, still pre-prime dominates toughest match yet) BW - Tommy Kelly MD10 Digger Stanley MW - Harris Martin DRAW Billy McCarthy (a picture of either or both of these guys would be greatly appreciated) WW - Otto Sieloff KO4 Jack Bennett HW - John Ferguson KO3 Jack Scales |

BRIGGS CAN'T HOLD TITLE
Billy Whistler (3-4-1) KO's champ Jimmy Briggs (2-3) in the 11th round to win the FW championship. Whistler rated a 3 survived a fast start by Briggs and wore down the champ. Briggs was down in the 8th, cut under his left eye in the 8th, and his left started to swell then also.
Whistler put Briggs down in the 10th and then out in the 11th. "I guess I came out fast to prove I was worthy of the title," Briggs said after the fight. "I just wasn't in good enough shape to continue that pace." "These two fighters have made the most of their opportunities," Mike Hanson, president of the LBA, stated after the fight in response to questions about two lowly thought of fighters holding the title. "Other lowly ranked fighters have had title shots in other divisions, Jimmy took advantage of his "one shot" and so did Billy, they shouldn't hang their heads because the press doesn't think they are worthy." Whistler had a big lead on all the scorecards when he KO'd Briggs. On the undercard FW - Abe Attell UD10 Joe Bernstein BW - Owen Moran UD10 Jimmy Walsh HW - Dominic McCaffrey KO9 Charlie McDonald HW- John McDermont KO3 Nick Burley (begginer Burley's first loss) HW - Johnny Woods KO4 Fred Robinson (Robinson stepping up to LHW for the loss) |

MCGOVERN CONTINUES KO STREAK
February 28, 1904
The last 6 fighters that Terrible Terry McGovern (16-2) has faced have ended up recieving a 10 count. George Dixon (9-4) has now counted for 2 of those 6 times. Dixon came out strong and took the fight to McGovern in the first. From the 2nd round on though it seemed everytime McGovern landed it stunned Dixon. It was a foul plagued fight for Terry as the ref deducted two points from McGovern both for holding and hitting. Dixon's right eye began to swell in the 3rd. McGovern landed a straight right in the 5th and Dixon took a knee for a 2 count. Midway through the 7th McGovern connected with an uppercut that dropped Dixon for good. This was McGovern's 4th title defense. On the undercard WW - Harry Lewis KO6 Harry Gilmore (Gilmore stepped up to WW and won the first 5 rounds before being KO'd in the 6th) LHW - Jack O' Brien UD10 John Donaldson (O' Brien 9-0-1 will debut at #1 on the LBA rankings) LHW - Al Greenfield UD10 Morris Harris WW - Owen Ziegler UD6 Dave Holly (Holly stepping up to WW for this loss) BW - Tommy Feltz UD10 Thomas Palmer (club fight) |

AUSTIN GIBBONS GETS HIS SECOND CHANCE
March 26, 1904
LW- Austin Gibbons even his record with a UD10 over Mike Daly (5-8-2) to move out of the club ranks. Gibbons dropped into the club ranks on 07-25-1901 when he fell to 0-5-1. It took 3 club losses and nearly 3 years to get back but he finally made it. He won 6 out of his last 7 fights to do so. |

HERRERA PITCHES SHUT OUT IN HIS FIRST BOUT
March 31st, 1904
FW - Aurelio Herrera (1-0) dominated veteran BW Chappie Moran (7-11-1) to win a UD10 in his first bout. Herrera took control in the first when he dropped Moran half way through. He came storming out in the second going for the KO and dropped Moran again late in the round. Herrera then settled in and won every round. I had it 100-90. Walt Arnold ringside had it 100-92. The official judges had it 100-90/100-90/100-91. This was notable because it was my first played out fight that was a complete shut-out. There you go Javier, I bring in my first Mexican and he sets a record!!! notable on the undercard LW Dick Burge (7-8-1)scored a TKO2 over WW Otto Sieloff (1-5) and decided to officially move up to WW. This is the first LBA fighter to move into a new weight. There were 14 "8" or higher rated fighters in LW, but only 6 in WW. He should be more successful there. PIC of Herrera included Last edited by mh2365; 04-15-2007 at 07:09 PM. |

APRIL TITLE FIGHTS
Busy month for championships in April as 3 of the 7 titles are on the line.
LHW - Jack Root (16-3) will make his 6th defense against UR Leo Houck (5-1-1) this will be a real test for Root as Houck is rated a 9 MW - Bob Fitzsimmons (14-0) will make his 6th defense against #1 Jack Dempsey NP (19-1) who he beat for the original title WW - Tommy Ryan (16-0) will fight a non-title fight as no decent WW were scheduled to fight this month. Probabley a match against a MW LW - Joe Gans (13-1-1) will make his 6th defense against #6 Andy Bowen (8-8) on a 4 fight win streak. Shouldn't be too much of a test for Gans. I see it as two belts possibly changing hands. |

LEO HOUCK WINS TITLE
April 12, 1904
Leo Houck (6-1-1) won a UD15 over champ Jack Root (16-4) to take the LHW Title away from the original holder. Houck used a strong start to take a big lead over Root then held on barely by winning the final two rounds. A defensive fight right from the start saw both fighter only landed around 30% of their punches. Houck (by my card) won rounds 2-7. Root made a galant comeback taking 8-10, 12, and 13. But Root couldn't win either of the last two rounds to keep his title. The punches landed were only 6 apart. I had the fight 144-142. Root had ringside expert Jim Trunzo in his pocket, Trunzo scored the fight 145-143 for Root. We may have to review his contract as a so called expert . The official judges had it 144-143/144-143/144-142. On the undercard LW - Young Griffo UD10 George Lavigne (Griffo stepped up to LW for the win but will stay at FW) LHW - George Gardner UD10 John Flood LHW - Joe Choynski KO4 Al Weinig HW - Joe Goss KO5 Mick Dooley (beginner Goss was down and behind on points when he got the KO) MW - Owen Ziegler TKO6 Kid Carter (Ziegler stepping up to MW for this club fight) |

FITZSIMMONS WINS AGAIN
April 17, 1904
Bob Fitzsimmons (15-0) beat Jack Dempsey NP (19-2) with a 14th round TKO for his 6th title defense. Fitz controlled the fight from the begining winning 5 of the first six rounds. He dropped Dempsey in the 5th. Dempsey got back into the fight winning 8-12 before getting sent to the mat again in the 13th. Fitz dropped Dempsey yet again in the opening seconds of round 14 and then swarmed Dempsey landing shot after shot until Enzo Montero stepped in at the 1:58 mark. Ringside expert Walt Arnold and I had the fight 125-121 when it was stopped. The official judges had it 126-121/125-121/126-121 On the undercard FW - Abe Attell UD10 Danny Dougherty (Dougherty stepped up to FW for the loss) LHW - Gunner Moir UD10 Fred Cooley HW - Dick Egan MD10 Steve Taylor (For those of you following Taylor's star has tarnished since his fast start, he has lost 5 out of 6 to drop to 8-7) HW - Jem Mace UD6 Henry Higgins (Mace is a beginner) HW - Tug Wilson SD10 James Dalton (club fight) |

GANS WINS 6TH DEFENSE
April 27, 1904
Joe Gans (14-1-1) stopped #6 Andy Bowen (8-9) in the 6th round to win his 6th title defense. Gans dominated from the opening bell and was pitching a shut out on all cards when the fight was stopped. Bowen was pretty beat up when they stopped it but he never went down. His right eye started swelling shut after round 2. He was cut over his right eye in round 3. Under his left eye in round 5. The the ref stopped it when he started bleeding under his right eye in round 6. On the undercard BW - Casper Leon KO4 Jimmy Walsh MW - Joe Walcott UD10 George Fulijames (Walcott stepping up in weight for the win) HW - James Corbett MD10 Marvin Hart MW - Jim Brady UD6 Jimmy Handler (Handler fighting as a beginner) WW - Matty Matthews UD10 Charles McCarthy (McCarthy stepping up to WW for the club fight loss) |
