Johnson Gets Easy 10th Defense

April 11th, 1906

Jack Johnson (21-1) cruised to a UD15 over #3 Tom Sharkey (20-7). Sharkey was overmatched in every since of the word. He kept looking to land that one big punch that never came.

Johnson stayed to the outside and hit Sharkey over and over again. One of the most lopsided title fights in Louisville Boxing History.

Johnson landed 520 out of 769 punches for a connection % of 67.6. Sharkey only landed 114 out of 636 for a % of 17.9.

Johnson started Sharkey's right eye swelling in the 5th and dropped him for a 6 count in the 13th.

I had it 149-135. Aurelio Barrios at ringside had it 148-136. The official judges had it 148-135/149-134/148-135.

On the undercard

HW - Frank Childs (15-10-3) DRAW10 William Miller (10-10-2)
LHW - Billy McColl (5-4) KO1 John Donaldson (5-5)
LW - Leach Cross (1-0) KO1 Jim Owen (TC) (0-2) (Corss fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - Jack Stelzner (10-14-2) MD10 Jim Miles (5-15-3) (club fight)
LHW - Morris Heffey (9-9-1) UD10 Chris Pearson (0-8) (Heffey moves back to the upper division with this club fight win)

Gans Wins Another Yawnfest

April 16th, 1906

Joe Gans (22-1-1) scored a UD15 over #4 Jem Carney (14-9) in a snoozer. Gans dominated the pace and the fight from the outset. Only two rounds were close, the 2nd and the 15th.

Carney's left eye began to swell in the 11th, other than that no cuts or knockdowns.

I had it 149-137. Darryl Woodford ringside had it 147-141. The official judges had it 148-138/150-136/147-139.

On the undercard

FW - Tommy Kelly (10-10-1) UD10 Joe Cain (0-4) (Kelly moved up to FW for the win)
LHW - George Byers (6-0) KO2 Charlie Atherton (TC) (0-2) (Byers fought pre-prime in this club fight)

Jeffries Takes Lbf Title

May 2, 1906

James Jeffries (25-2) scored his 24th KO in the 6th round to win the title from champ Dominic McCaffrey (14-6-3).

Jeffries came in a 2-1 favorite, but it appeared that McCaffrey was intent on keeping his title. McCaffrey won the first 3 rounds and cut Jeffries over his left eye in the first.

Jeffries took the 4th and 5th before dropping McCaffrey with an uppercut in the 6th that ended the fight.

On the undercard

HW - Larry Floey (14-5-2) KO9 Joe Goddard (8-12)
LHW - Jack Root (21-6) KO8 Fred Cooley (3-7-1)

Butler Wins First Defense

May 10th, 1906

Joe Butler (20-4-1) scored a UD15 over #4 Charles McCoy (15-6-3) to win his first title defense of the LBC middleweight title.

Butler controlled the pace of the fight from the outset and never got into the slugging match that McCoy wanted. Butler battered McCoy in the first 2/3 of the fight and built a solid lead on the scorecards. McCoy was bleeding from the mouth in the 7th and went down in the 9th.

He shook it off and finished strong as Butler seemed content with the decision.

I had it 145-139. Tom Trunzo ringside had it 146-138. The official judges had it 143-141/146-139/144-140.

On the undercard

WW - Rube Ferns (16-7) KO2 Bill Quinn (1-5-1)
LW - Jewey Cooke (7-2-1) UD10 Eddie Connelly (7-1)
LHW - Dan Flynn (1-1) UD6 Kiernan Wibert (TC) (0-2-1) (Flynn fought as a beginner in this club fight)
FW - Ben Jordan (2-0) UD6 Alvin Rose (TC) (1-2) (Jordan fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - Syd Hughes (2-6-1) UD6 Heriberto Rojas (1-4-2) (Rojas fought as a beginner in this club fight)

#8 Dixie Kid Survives Late Rally To Take Lbc Welterweight Title

May 12, 1906

Dixie Kid (12-7-5) built up an insurmountable lead through the first 10 rounds and won a UD15 over champ Jimmy Gardner (13-9-2) to win the LBC welterweight title.

It was a good thing he built up such a lead because Gardner came storming back but it was too late to steal the win.

Gardner was dropped in the 3rd and cut badly in the 9th. Kid built a sizeable lead at the 10 round mark (I had it 97-92). Gardner then took 4 of the last 5 rounds and was close on the 5th. Might of pulled out the draw if he took all five.

I had it 143-141. Dan Cuoco ringside had it 145-139. The official judges had it 143-141/144-140/143-141.

On the undercard

WW - George Cole (3-3) TKO5 Buddy Ryan (5-7) (due to a recent re-rating of Cole I would expect a win streak out of him)
FW - Young Corbett (12-8-3) UD10 Martin Flaherty (2-4-2)
LHW - JH Brown (7-12) UD6 Fred Russell (1-1) (Russell fought as a beginner in this club fight)
FW - Will Curley (5-0) TKO6 Paul Marks (TC) (0-3) (Curley fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - Tony Ross (4-2) KO5 Con Coughlin (5-18) (Ross fought as a beginner in this club fight)

Lavigne Retains Title With Tech. Decision

May 15th, 1906

George Lavigne (18-6-1) won a TECH. DEC. 5 over #1 Battling Nelson (12-11) to successfully defend his title.

A accidental head butt in the 5th caused the fight to be stopped and go to the score cards. Lavigne had dropped Nelson in the 4th and Nelson was in trouble in the 5th when the head butt occurred.

I had it 39-35 at the time of the stoppage. Danny Wildhawke ringside had it 39-36. The official judges had it 39-36/38-36/38-36.

On the undercard

LW - Jack Blackburn (14-5-3) UD10 FW Kid Herman Landfield (3-7) (Landfield unsuccessfully stepping up in weight for this fight)
BW - Johnny Coulon (8-0) UD10 Charley Kelly (2-3-1)
MW - Billy Papke (2-0) TKO1 Gary Tyler (TC) (0-2)
FW - Sammy Kelly (1-1) UD6 Simon Curthall (TC) (0-2)
HW - Joe Lannon (9-13) KO7 Mike Sheehan (4-16-1)

Herrera Cruises To 10th Win

May 20th, 1906

Aureilo Herrera (10-2) scored a TKO5 over Marty McCue (5-9) to remain the #2 challenger for the LBA crown and #1 in line for the future LBC crown.

Herrera dominated from the opening bell easily winning the first 3 rounds. In the fourth he put McCue on the ropes and never let him back off, finally opening a huge cut over McCue's right eye prompting the ref to step in and stop it.

Mcgovern Regains Title

May 25th, 1906

Terry McGovern (20-4-1) regained his title with a TKO2 over champ Billy Plimmer (15-6-4). McGovern jumped on Plimmer at the opening bell dominating the first round and swelling up Plimmer's right eye. Early in the second a solid jab opened a huge gash on Plimmer's right eye and the ref stopped the bout.

It was a quick stoppage but Plimmer didn't bring his A game and was in for a long fight.

On the undercard

HW - Peter Jackson (22-3) KO1 Sam McVey (14-3)
HW - John Dwyer (15-5-1) KO8 John Knifton (14-11)
MW - Jim Griffin (3-0) UD6 Frank Slavin (2-17-1) (Griffin fought as a beginner in this club fight)
BW - Monte Attell (2-0) TKO2 Johnny Reagan (2-10) (Attell fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - James Dalton (6-14-3) KO8 PJ Rentzler (6-11-2) (Rentzler stepped up to HW for this club fight)

Choynski Wins Second Defense

June 5th, 1906

Joe Choynski (20-7) scored a UD15 over #3 Leo Houck to win his second title defense.

Choynski controlled the fight from the outset, beating Houck at his own game. Houck wanted a boxing match and Choynski outboxed him. Choynski controlled most of the fight suffered a cut under his left eye in the 9th.

Joe can back to cut Houck under his left eye in the 10th. Choynski's cut was closed effectively while Houck's bled for 3 rounds. Houck looked tired as he came out for the 13th and was promptly dropped twice in the round. Houck just held the rest of the fight to finish it out.

I had it 146-138. Mirco Mizera ringside had it 146-139. The official cards had it 147-136/146-138/146-137.

On the undercard

LHW - Charles Cooley (2-5) UD10 Morris Heffey (9-10-1)

Ryan Keeps On Winning

June 10th, 1906

Tommy Ryan (25-0) stayed undefeated with a TKO8 over #2 Honey Mellody (9-9). Ryan dominated the fight from the outset only losing one round.

Mellody was cut on the mouth in the 3rd, knocked down in the 5th, and stopped in the 8th when a nasty cut over his left eye opened.

On the undercard

HW - John Heenan (14-4-1) UD10 Hank Griffin (8-2-1)
HW - Marvin Hart (10-9-2) UD10 Billy Wilson (11-11-1)

Griffo Keeps Title ..... Barely

June 22, 1906

Young Griffo (20-4-3) retained his LBA Featherweight Title by virtue of a DRAW15 against #6 Tommy Sullivan (7-8-2).

Griffo piled up a big round lead with slim round wins (by 1 or 2 points) in 5 of the first 8 rounds, and good rounds in 2 others. By most score cards he held a 7-1 round lead after 8 rounds. Then Sullivan took over winning rounds 9-14. I had it even going into the last round.

Sullivan started slow in the 15th with Griffo scoring the first 8 points. Sullivan battled back to tie the points at 10, then Griffo landed a 2 pointer with 10 seconds left to take the round. That's right 6 of the 8 rounds he won by 2 points or less, talk about barely doing enough.

I had it 143-142 Griffo. Dan Cuoco rindside had it 143-143 with round 1 even. The official judges had it 142-142/142-142/143-141 Griffo.

On the undercard
HW - Bob Armstrong 19-7-2) UD10 Charley Stevenson (3-4) (Stevenson stepped up to HW for the loss)
FW - Clarence Forbes (8-5) SD10 Martin Flaherty (2-5-2)
FW - Kid Broad (6-1) UD8 Alvin Rose (TC) (1-3) (Broad fought pre-prime in this club fight)
MW - Arthur Cripps (5-1) TKO2 Steve Bacon (TC) (0-2) (Cripps fought pre-prime in this club fight)
HW - Joe Lannon (10-13) MD10 Joe Hess (1-18) (club fight)

This concludes the title fights for June ... see you in a day or two with July's title fights
