26th roster spot

What do you think will be the most common use of the 26th roster spot?

1) 3rd Catcher
2) Utility Infielder
3) Extra Outfielder
4) 8th Reliever

Note:
I currently go with this 25
Pitchers: 5+7
Battes: 2+6+5

I will go with utility infielder that is speed and defense. Bring back the lost aspects of the game.

I guess it would depend on the team your occupying. I’ll probably carry an extra pitcher for my blue jays.

IRL it likely won't be another pitcher, as teams are now limited to carrying 13 pitchers. That rises to 14 after September 1.

Other than the 26 man rule, I hate these new rules that Manfred has implemented.

Did anyone truly have a probably in with matchups or 40 man september call ups? I thought it was awesome to get to see a handful of new players in the bigs.

I always go 13/13 so 8 relievers.

I have been playing with the 26 man with XX. I bounce between utilizing the extra spot on a defense player that can play multiple spots, and a speedy pinch runner.

I have had objections to it for years. To have teams field essentially AAA rosters against teams in the playoff hunt always seemed wrong. To dilute the rosters at the most important time of the season always seemed bizarre.

The combination of the two was a big issue at times. Look at this moment showcasing the Red Sox 17 man September bullpen:

Having that many pitchers, with no usage restrictions was just ridiculous for pace of play.

I think 13&13 works for both the AL and NL as a general guideline. Though I'm not against trying out lots of different things. Like 11 +stamina pitchers, and 15 batters with a whole bunch of platoons.

I vote the extra spot goes to the team mascot

I never 'got' why rosters expanded so much in September, so I'm a fan of the reduction, although I now don't 'get' why the extra 2 players doesn't carry through to the postseason. Oh well

The key question though, is always "does pace of play actually matter that much?"

AL or NL may mean a difference. Personally I would go with an extra bat.. They have taken some strategy away with this must pitch to 3 batter rule.. That sucks.

Generally I don't care about it that much, but when teams were 3 relievers in an inning to get through matchups, it was awful.

I stop watching a lot of games after the 4th-5th inning as it gets quite boring when you get 3-10 pitches and then a commercial break. Then 3-10 pitches and another commercial break. For every 2 minutes of baseball, you get 2 and a half of adverts.

Maybe we should go back to the initial question here.

What do you think will be the most common use of the 26th roster spot?
What do use the roster spot for?

26 players is so 2020.

My league in 2026 has evolved to 27 man rosters and it's 13 pitchers and 14 hitters. I do a lot of pinch running and late inning defensive replacements.

I agree and now if you follow MILB you'll actually have solid AAA playoffs and not have to worry about your best players leaving in Sept to just ride the big team's bench.

3 batters or end the inning. But yeah, I hate it too.

MLB teams will likely have the max amount of pitchers available anyway, so go 13/13, regardless of league. Me personally I might be tempted to go for a pinch-runner / defensive replacement type.

I think a lot of teams will use it to carry a 3rd catcher.
Right now most teams play their catchers 2:1, meaning for every 2 games your starting catcher gets, the backup starts one.
If one of them gets an injury (and catchers as with all baseball players get injured a lot) it means you have to go into the minors and use an option year potentially.

In OOTP I will probably use it for a third catcher as well. If that catcher can also play a little 1B and corner OF then all the better.

I could be very wrong, but coming out of ST I could see a lot of MLB teams opt to go back north with a third catcher on their rosters.
