Tony Gwynn

I just pulled a Tony Gwynn, Historic All-Star, 1984. He hit .351 BA, .410 OBA, 213 Hits, 33 SB, 6.3 WAR...yet his card is only 69? How did you calculate that?

Hell of a card. Solid hitting with good defense.

Probably the only card in the 60's that can easily feature in PL teams.

Not a lot of power or eye rating.

But a hell of a card and will be great for tournaments or leagues with a cap.

I wouldn't give up my Gwynns or Carews for the world. They will always find a spot in the lineup.

That card is very nice, it's like the 69 Ichiro from 19 in terms of being much better than its rating.

The algorithm for figuring out total rating must not be overly impressed with the contact rating.

I really want to start Gwynn, Lavalliere or both on my perfect league team. But, the way my cards are set up I am liable to deactivate them by mistake while sorting through new stuff. Crazy that it's the main reason I don't use the cards...they are just so far removed from all my other active cards in the list.

I use a Pudge Rodriguez/ Lavalliere tandem on my PL team. It's the one place I don't look to upgrade.

I tried the 98 Roy Campanella, but didn't produce much. Now I'm using the 88 Pudge Rodriguez vs right and the 96 Chris Hoiles vs left and both doing good.

Buck Ewing is my everyday catcher with Johnny Bench backing him up.

My 90 Satchell Paige is 9-1 at the moment. My 81 Willie Foster (Negro League) is doing great as my closer with a 1.14 ERA.

Bench as a backup backstop...Ewing must be pretty good!

Anyone know how the 82 Cool Papa Bell performs? His speed is amazing, of course, but how is his on-base stats in Perfect Team?

Tony Gwynn

Cool Papa Bell works well in the lower levels but once you get to Diamond, he is starting to have more problems.
Without looking at his card, you may be able to still use him as a backup in LF (defensive is just below 90) and play him every time against LHPs. His average seems to drop too much against RHPs.

My son uses him on his Diamond team as backup and primary player for LHPs in LF while also using him as a pinch runner against right handed batters. He won’t lead the league is steals but he still gets his share and his average/OBP seems to be acceptable against left handed pitchers.

Long term, you will probably want to look at an even better hitter or better defensive player.

Unfortunately, all our data is up to Diamond league.

Negro League cards most of them I've seen, aren't often spectacular but often well-balanced which plays well even in the Perfect Leagues sometimes. (no blue ratings but at least green, plus the multiple positions)...Olerud is another one has a 69 card that can play D and hit .305 against the best.

Not too bad. I'm in the Bronze league at the moment.

Do they have a card for Josh Gibson?
