The Atlanta Braves have sold RF Tony Gonzalez to the California Angels. The 34 year old is hitting .280 with 7 HRs and 49 RBIs in 116 games with the Braves. Gonzalez was plagued most of his career by eye problems, possibly due to getting hit by pitches. Between that and back surgery, Gonzalez may not have reached his potential. The Angels are have rumoured to be looking for Gonzalez as to add some depth to their roster for a playoff/pennant push.

Facts....... and more Facts.

The Real LIfe 1970 MLB Pennant Chases:

On September 6th, 1970 the NL East was led by the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 74-64 record, 2 games ahead of the Cubs and 2.5 games ahead of the Mets. First year manager Danny Murtaugh had the Pirates go 19-10 from September 1st on to win the East by 5 games over the Cubs and 6 games over the Mets. Pirates SP Dock Ellis pitched a no hitter on June 12th, allegedly while on acid, everything seemed to go right for the Pirates. As well the Pirates drafted OF Dave Parker in the 14th round of the draft. Murtaugh would go on to win the Associated Press NL Manager of the Year. Although the Cubs finished 2nd in 1970, they drafted SP Rick Reuschel who went on to a pretty good career. The Mets could not duplicate the miracle of the 1969 World Series season, they finished a respectable 83-79 but a trade with up and coming Amos Otis who was sent to the Royals for Joe Foy may have been an pre-season omen.

In the beginning of September of September the NL West was not a close race, the Cincinnati Reds had a 11.5 game lead on the 2nd place Dodgers with the Dodgers losing SP Bill Singer for the rest of the season. Manager Sparky Anderson had just come off a 14-15 month of August for the Reds, the only losing month of the year for the Reds. The Reds would finish the season 14.5 games ahead of the Dodgers. The Reds got off to a 70-30 start in 1970, they cruised 32-30 the rest of the way. Johnny Bench would go on to win the NL MVP in 1970.

The AL East was not a close race either. On September 1st, the Baltimore Orioles had a 12 game lead on the Yankees. The Orioles were 86-47 to this point. The Orioles finished 22-7 the rest of the way to take the division and pennant by 15 games over the runner up Yankees. The Orioles were back in the playoffs and looking for redemption after the 1969 World Series loss to the Miracle Mets. Led by the bat of 1970 AL MVP Boog Powell and his 35 HRs and Brooks Robinson's 94 RBIs with the steady stream of Cuellar, McNally and Palmer on the hill, the Orioles were not challenged by the Yankees.

Things were a little tighter in the AL West, the Twins had a 3 game lead on the Angels and 7 over the Athletics with a month left in the season. The Twins (22-10) pulled away from the Angels who faltered down the stretch (12-18) and held off the surge of the Athletics (19-11) in the final month for the pennant win. The Twins were lead offensively by 3B Harmon Killebrew (.271 41 113) and RF Tony Oliva (.325 23 107). The Twins would have been more of a threat offensively but lost Rod Carew to a knee injury in the 1st half of the season. Pitchers Jim Perry (24-12 3.04) Jim Kaat (14-10 3.56) and rookie Bert Blyleven (10-9 3.18) gave the Twins a good 1-2-3 punch.

Robinson has a long list of awards, he was the 1961 NL MVP, 1966 AL MVP, 1956 NL Rookie of the Year, 1966 World Series MVP to go along with his 10-time All Star games and 1 Gold Glove.

Minnesota Twins SP Luis Tiant's season appear's to be done. The 29 year old is going onto the DL for the 2nd time this season. Tiant is 4-8 with a 4.78 ERA in 15 starts. Tiant was an 1968 AL All Star, he led the league with a 1.60 ERA in that season. It appears that the crack in the bone of his right shoulder is still bothering him as he missed 10 weeks already this season.

The California Angels will face the last tow weeks of the pennant chase without star SP Andy Messersmith as he was place on the DL. The 25 year old is 14-8 with 1 save, a 2.32 ERA in 26 starts. Messersmith was an AL All Star this season and had a NO HITTER in July against the Brewers. Credited by Yankees manager Billy Martin as having the best stuff in the league, Messersmith proved he was going to be a star in 1969.

The Philadelphia Phillies season was bad enough but now they will finish the season without star 1B Dick Allen. The 28 year old is hitting .339 with 35 HRs and 111 RBIs in 135 games. Playing in unfamiliar territory at 3B in 1964, Allen made 41 errors in his rookie season. Allen, never really ever escaped controversy, whether racial, fighting with teammates or contract issues. In 1965 Allen held out for more money, got into a fight with teammate Frank Thomas over what Allen thought was a racially motivated comment. Only once in his career to this point since 1959 has he played 125 games or more (153 in 1964). Maye is noted for breaking teammate Joe Morgan's kneecap in 1966 during batting practise while playing for the Astros.

The "knuckleballer" played his whole career as 1 year younger then he told everyone, it was discovered at the time of his death in 2002 he was born in 1922 rather than 1923. The trade to the Cubs by the Braves is suspicious according to MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn. He investigated the deal but let the deal stand even though it was considered a "rental". Wilhelm holds two baseball career records. He has 217 saves and 1043 games pitched.

Facts.... and more Facts

The 1970 Playoffs in this Sim will be pretty close to what happened in Real Life without the Minnesota Twins replaced by the Oakland Athletics.

In the NL Championship Series, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 to move onto the World Series. In game 1, was first marred by an impromptu Umpires strike that forced minor league umps to officiate the game. The Reds won game 1 in extra innings breaking a 0-0 pitching gem between Gary Nolan and Dock Ellis with a 3 run 10th. Lee May's 2-run double was the key blow. The Reds won games 2 and 3 to sweep the Pirates.

In the AL Championship Series, the Baltimore Orioles swept the Minnesota Twins 3-0. Unlike the Reds-Pirates series, the games were not real close and the Orioles had two 7 run innings. In game two, with the scored 4-3 in favor of the Orioles going to the top of the 9th, SP Dave McNally got it started with a leadoff double and the Orioles got 6 more hits including a 2-run HR from 2B Davey Johnson scoring 7 runs and taking a 11-3 lead.

In the World Series, the Baltimore Orioles beat the Cincinnati Reds 4 games to 1. The Reds won game four of the series to make it 3-1 still in favour of the Orioles, and scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st to take an early 3-0 in game five. After that it was all Orioles as they scored 2 runs in each of he first 3 innings to take a 6-3 lead and eventual 9-3 win to grasp the World Series. Brooks Robinson was the World Series MVP, he hit .429 with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs in those 5 games.

The 1970 National League Championship Series Preview

The Cincinnati Reds took a while to get this season rolling this year. They kept pretty close to .500 ball right up until the end of May and trailed the league leading Dodgers by 5 games. Nearing the All Star Break, the Reds were still 5.5 games behind now the Braves at 57-49. It was after that the Reds caught fire and finished the last 62 days of the season at 40-16 and were tied for the lead in the NL West on September 1st with the Braves, then never really looking back.

The Reds simply hit the ball, they ranked pretty much in the top 3 in the NL in all offensive categories including leading the league with extra base hits. The Reds also are strong defensively at all 9 positions with above average pitching. The Reds were pretty much injury free all season and were aided by the emergence of Gary Nolan and Jim Merritt as being bonafide starters in the Majors. Wayne Granger led the league in appearances with 78, he closed the season with 17 saves. C Johnny Bench proved that his 33 HRs in 1969 were not a fluke and he has the makings of a superstar. RF Pete Rose led the league in at bats with 671, hits with 217 and doubles with 38. Rose continues to be a hit machine.

The Mets used superior pitching to clinch the NL East. They almost led every pitching category including 2.99 ERA, 3.07 Starters ERA, 540 runs allowed, .228 opposition batting average and 1158 strikeouts.

The 1970 American League Championship Series Preview

The Oakland Athletics used hitting power with the 2-3-4 hitters combining for 109 HRs and 175 RBIs and a solid starting group and the AL's best bull pen to win the AL West. The Athletics had to survive a weak June (11-16) in which they started the month with a 4 1/2 game lead on the Angels that ended with the Athletics trailing the Angels by 1/2 game. A strong July (17-10) actually was not good enough because on August 1st the A's fell to 2 games behind the surging Twins. The A's were just 17-13 in August but the Twins and Angels slumped with Oakland now leading the division by 3 games on the Angels and 6 games ahead of the Twins. The Athletics never looked back after that even though they are not going into the playoffs on a hot streak.

CL Bob Locker coming over from the Brewers solidified an already strong relief corp. The Athletics purchased him from the Brewers in June. The addition of 1B Don Mincher was huge as he had 41 HRs and 98 RBIs after just 18 HRs in 1969 with the Seattle Pilots. The A's got Mincher in a January trade with the Pilots (Brewers) . Another addition in the off season was LF Felipe Alou, Alou had just 36 RBIs in 127 games for the Braves in 1969 and was traded by the Braves in December 1969.

The Orioles were blessed with two 20 game winners and a strong hitting and power in the 3-4-5 slots of the line up. The Orioles led the AL East from Opening Day till game 162. The Orioles never faltered in any month of the season.

The 24 year old Stinson hit .1.000 with his 1 for 1 performance this season. Stinson was named the MLB's 52nd ranked prospect in April 1970. The 28 year old Allen hit .338 with 35 HRs and 111 RBIs in 137 games for the Cardinals. Allen was the 1964 NL Rookie of the Year and 4-time All Star. Allen was involved in one of the most famous trades in MLB history, almost a year ago to the date, Allen was involved in a trade to the Cardinals in a deal that included Curt Flood. Flood refused to report to the Phillies and later sued he MLB challenging the MLB's reserve clause. The Cardinals are claiming that the deal has nothing to do with the controversy that follows Allen, its about needing a second baseman in getting Sizemore.

The Washington Senators have traded SS Ed Brinkman, 3B Aurelio Rodriquez, SP Joe Coleman and RP Jim Hannan to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for SP Denny McLain, 3B Don Wert, RP Norm McRae and 3B Elliott Maddox. The 28 year old Brinkman hit .217 with 1 HR and 40 RBIs in 159 games for the Senators. Brinkman won the 1969 AL Gold Glove at SS. Brinkman played high school baseball along side Reds star Pete Rose and was actually ranked higher by the high school scouts than his long time friend. The 22 year old Rodriquez hit .258 with 12 HRs and 67 RBIs in 163 games with the Angels (17) and Senators (146). The Mexican born Rodriquez made his debut in 1967 with the Angels and has played in 426 MLB games since hitting .253 with 26 HRs and 164 RBIs. The 23 year old Coleman was 15-10 with a 2.71 ERA in 38 games including 30 starts for the Senators. Coleman was the AL's September 1970 Pitcher of the Month. Coleman led the AL with 15 wild pitches in 1969 and led the AL with a 6.06 hits/9 in 1970. Coleman debuted in 1965 with the Senators and tossed a 4-hit complete game win. A 1st round pick in 1965, he was selected 3rd overall, Coleman was called up in September by the Senators as an 18 year old beating Catfish Hunter of the Athletics who was 19 years old. After several years of suffering the management style of Ted Williams, Coleman will be happy to move on. The 30 year old Hannan was 5-8 with a 5.12 ERA in 21 games including 17 starts for the Senators. The 26 year old McLain was 9-11 with 1 save, a 5.41 ERA in 29 games for the Tigers. McLain was the 1968 AL Cy Young Award winner, 1968 AL MVP and a 3-time All Star. McLain led the league with shutouts in 1968 (16) and 1969 (26). Those same years he led the AL with starts, starting 41 games in each season. McLain was 31-6 with a 1.96 ERA in 1968 for the Tigers. The free spirited McLain had a strained relationship with team mates and with managers and fans. This may have been as a result of his tough home life. McLain hit a HR in his MLB debut in 1963, in real life it was his only HR he hit in the Majors. With endorsements with Pepsi and Hammond Organs, by age 22 McLain was making more money off the the field then on. Baseball and life took a change of direction when in February of 1970 it was suspected that McLain had ties to the Mob and had invested into a book making operation. MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended McLain while he conducted an investigation which involved at the time well know gangster Tony Giacalone. Due to the suspension and that his lawyer misappropriated much of his income, McLain was suddenly broke and was forced to file for bankruptcy. McLain was reinstated into baseball on July 1st, 1970 after Kuhn's investigation. Detroit had enough of McLain and moved him to the Senators to duel with Ted Williams. The 32 year old Wert hit .225 with 5 HRs and 31 RBIs in 124 games for the Tigers. Wert was an AL All Star in 1968. The 23 year old McRae was 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA in 4 games for the Tigers. The 22 year old Maddox hit .310 with 3 HRs and 30 RBIs in 117 games in his rookie season with the Tigers. Maddox was ranked the MLB's 30th prospect in April 1970. History will prove that this was one of the most lopsided trades in the MLB for many years.

October 1970 News and Transactions

The Boston Red Sox have traded RF Tony Conigliaro, SP Ray Jarvis and C Jerry Moses to the California Angels in exchange for RP Ken Tatum, CF Jarvis Tatum and 2B Doug Griffin. The 25 year old Conigliaro hit .269 with 29 HRs and 118 RBIs in 155 games for the Red Sox. The 1967 All Star led the AL with 32 HRs in 1965. Conigliaro started his career off with a bang in 1964, the 1st pitch he faced at 19 years of age he homered at Fenway Park. He hit 24 HRs in his rookie season, the most ever by an 19 year old. The following season he was the youngest player to lead the league in HRs. Conigliaro was often getting hit by pitches, due to his crowding of the plate. In his rookie season he took 4 days to recover from a small fracture in his wrist and then missed a month due to a broken arm after getting hit by a pitch. In 1965, Tony was joined by his brother Billy after the Red Sox selected him in the 1st round. On August 18th, 1967 with the Red Sox in the middle of a pennant chase, Conigliaro's crowding of the plate would change his career forever. He was hit by a Jack Hamilton pitch in the head. It was said that Tony prayed, "god, please please don't let me die right here in the dirt at home plate in Fenway Park". Conigliaro did not play the remainder of the season and there were concerns he would lose his complete eye sight. He tried to come back for spring training in 1968, but his doctor told him his eye sight was inadequate and that he should consider retiring from baseball. After retraining himself on how to see the ball, during 1968 he began to try to get ready for 1969 and spring training. His 2-run HR in the top of the 10th on opening day in 1969 told the world, he was back. He was voted the Comeback Player of the Year. In 1970, his brother Billy joined him as a regular in the Red Sox lineup. The Red Sox sensing that Tony was playing on pure guts and talent but concerned that his eye sight will become a problem in the future took advantage of his high stock value and traded him to the Angels. It is rumoured that Tony Conigliaro is crushed by the news. Tony's brother Billy was more outspoken, he blamed the trade on Carl Yastrzemski having too much influence on Red Sox management. The 24 year old Jarvis was 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in 3 games for the Red Sox. The 24 year old Moses hit .264 with 9 HRs and 41 RBIs in 97 games for the Red Sox. The 26 year old Ken Tatum was 6-3 with 6 saves, a 3.19 ERA in 47 games for the Angels. Tatum was the 1969 AL Rookie of the Year winner when he led the AL with 21 saves. He was the MLB's 53rd ranked prospect in April 1969. The 24 year old Jarvis Tatum hit .220 with 1 HR and 14 RBIs in 44 games for the Angels. The 23 year old Griffin hit .241 with 0 HRs and 7 RBIs in 43 games as a rookie for the Angels. Griffin was named the MLBs 78th ranked prospect in April 1970.

The Twins called him up again 1968 in September, this time he hit his 1st MLB homer off of Angels Clyde Wright. The Royals then got Kelly in the expansion draft in 1968. White Sox Manager Chuck Tanner appeared excited at getting Kelly, and added they were overloaded at 1B. The 25 year old O'Riley was 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 2 starts for the Royals. Schofield was signed by the Cardinals in June 1953. Schofield got ejected out of his 1st and only career ejection before he every took an at bat in the big leagues. On the instructions of his manager Eddie Stanky, Schofield tossed a towel on the field after umpire Augie Donatelli told Stanky that if another towel got tossed out of the dugout the person would get ejected. With options limited to Schofield in the Cardinal infield, the Cards shipped him to Pittsburgh where he played second fiddle to another starting SS in Dick Groat. In September 1960 and with Groat injured, Schofield showed what he could do and hit .403 down the stretch. Finally in 1963 after Groat was traded to the Cardinals, Schofield became a starting SS and lead off hitter for the Pirates. From 1953 to 1970, only from 1963 to 1965 did Schofield play more then 100 games in season, he was mostly a utility player. The 27 year old Campbell hit .000 in 3 at bats for the Cardinals.

He led he league with 211 hits in 1964, and he also led the league twice in at bats. The 31 year old endured much racism in his minor league days with the Reds, and even a trade to the Cardinals left him on the bench because of racial issues early on. But by 1960 he became a part of a successful Cardinals team and Flood showed what he could do hitting and driving in runs while winning a pair of World Series rings. After the Cardinals refused to meet Flood's contract demands in 1969, the Flood-Cardinal's relationship was strained and on October 8th, 1969 Flood was told he had been traded to the Phillies. Flood was not happy with the trade, he took it as a demotion. Flood challenged the MLB's reserve clause which made it impossible to sell his services to another club until his existing contract had expired for at least 1 year. Flood vs Kuhn (Bowie Kuhn baseball commissioner) to place in court in May 1970, the ruling in favour of the the owners. Flood appealed in April 1971. (to be continued) This trade was negotiated when the Phillies allowed the Senators to negotiate directly with Flood on a contract for 1971. The 23 year old Martin has not played in the MLB since 1968 when he hit .364 with 1 HR and 1 RBI in 9 games for the Senators. The 25 year old Goossen hit .254 with 3 HRs and 18 RBIs in 99 games for the Senators (38) and Brewers (61).

Since his debute in 1961 with the White Sox, Hershberger has played in 1061 games, has 858 hits, 26 HRs and 329 RBIs with a .253 batting average.

The Baltimore Orioles have traded RP Moe Drabowsky to the St Louis Cardinals in exchange for 2B Jerry DaVanon. The 35 year old Drabowsky was 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 28 games with the Orioles (19) and Royals (9). Drabowsky was known for his pranks, using snakes and sometimes firecrackers. The Chicago White Sox have traded CF Ken Berry, 3B Syd O'Brien and RP Billy Wynne to the California Angels in exchange for CF Jay Johnstone, C Tom Egan and SP Tom Bradley. The 29 year old Berry hit .277 with 11 HRs and 69 RBIs in 147 games for the White Sox. Berry was an 1967 AL All Star and as a 26 year old he hit .241 with 7 HRs and 41 RBIs in 147 games for the White Sox that season. Berry is best known for his fielding but had a 20 game hitting streak from May 28th to June 15th in 1967. The 26 year old O'Brien hit .276 with 14 HRs and 57 RBIs in 127 games for the White Sox. O'Brien was named the MLB's 77th ranked prospect in April 1969. The 27 year old Wynne was 6-8 with 1 save, a 3.36 ERA in 47 games including 10 starts for the White Sox. Wynne had a 1-hit shutout on April 18th, 1970 with 8 strikeouts against the Brewers. The 25 year old Johnstone hit .289 with 11 HRs and 50 RBIs in 128 games for the Angels. Many call Johnstone a flake, for his talent, smarts and ability to speak his mind. Johnstone stated about the trade and the Angels "They never seemed willing to give me a steady job and say they'd give me time to develop no matter what I did." The 24 year old Egan hit .226 with 12 HRs and 32 RBIs in 89 games for the Angels. The 23 year old Bradley was 8-4 with 3 saves, a 2.41 ERA in 28 games including 13 starts with the Angels. Bradley was named the MLB's 42nd ranked prospect in April 1969. Bradley was drafted by the Angels in 1968 despite having less than good vision. (20/450) and needing glasses. Wilhelm led the league with a 2.19 ERA in 1959. The "Old Knuckleballer" once got in trouble by ramming a police car in 1954, suffering a bruised arm. The trade from the Braves to the Cubs earlier was considered controversial as Bowie Kuhn considered it an "rental" when the Cubs traded him back to the Braves. The 26 year old Breeden has not played in the MLB.

The Chicago White Sox have traded SS Luis Aparicio to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for 2B Mike Andrews and 2B Luis Alvarado. The 36 year old hit .281 with 4 HRs and 35 RBIs in 154 games for the White Sox. Aparicio was the 1956 AL Rookie of the Year and has won 8 Gold Gloves and is a 7-time All Star. Aparicio collected his 2000th career hit on May 14th, 1969. Aparicio led the league 9 straight year (1956-1964) in SBs. His 1956 Rookie of the Year award was the first for a Latin American player. The 27 year old Andrews hit .270 with 16 HRs and 59 RBIs in 154 games for the Red Sox. Andrews led the league with 18 SAC Hits in 1967. The 21 year old Alvarado hit .207 with 0 HRs and 12 RBIs in 116 games for the Red Sox.

Phoebus made his MLB in September 1966 and had a complete game shut out 2-0 win over Dean Chance and the Angels. In his 2nd career start, he had another shut out to become only the 7th pitcher since 1900 to achieve 2 shutouts in his first 2 starts. Phoebus had mixed emotions in the trade, he had many family and friends in Baltimore which was his and his wifes home town, but he would get a fresh start as a regular in the rotation for the Padres. The 26 year old Severinsen did not pitch in the MLB in 1970. Severinsen was named the MLB's 44th ranked prospect in April 1970. The 28 year old Beene was 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 1 game for the Orioles in 1970. The 21 year old Hernandez has not played in the MLB as of yet. The 28 year old Dobson was 11-14 with a 3.52 ERA in 34 starts for the Padres. Dobson made his MLB debut on May 31st, 1967 against the Indians. December 1970 MLB News and Major Transactions

The Pittsburgh Pirates traded SS Freddie Patek, SP Bruce Dal Canton and C Jerry May to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for SP Bob Johnson, 2B Jackie Hernandez and C Jim Campanis. The 26 year old Patek hit .259 with 2 HRs and 18 RBIs in 103 games for the Pirates in 1970. "The Flea" only stood 5'5 was a 22nd round pick of the Pirates in 1965. With current SS Gene Alley, the Pirates felt that Patek was expendable. The 29 year old Dal Canton was 3-7 with 5 saves, a 5.70 ERA in 41 games including 6 starts for the Pirates in 1970. Dal Canton was an All Star in 1969 and finished 2nd in the Reliever of the Year voting that season. He had 17 saves and a 2.50 ERA in 57 games for the Pirates in 1969. The 27 year old May hit .239 with 1 HR and 13 RBIs in 44 games for the Pirates in 1970. The Pirates added 27 year old Johnson who was 9-9 with a 2.81 ERA in 26 starts for the Royals. Johnson finished 3rd in the 1970 AL Rookie of the Year voting. He was ranked the 12th MLB prospect in April 1969. The 30 year old Hernandez hit .181 with 1 HR and 12 RBIs in 98 games for the Royals in 1970. The 26 year old Campanis hit .111 with 0 HRs and 3 RBIs in 8 games for the Royals in 1970.

The New York Yankees traded LF Bill Robinson to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for SP Barry Moore. The 27 year old Robinson did not play in the MLB since 1969 when he hit .198 with 3 HRs and 11 RBIs in 84 games for the Yankees. Robinson was a member of the 1969 World Series winning Yankees. Robinson was nicknamed "Weaser" and nobody including himself can determine why. Known for his unique pre-batting ritual which included a quick Lords Prayer, crossing himself, rubs his forehead from the eyebrows to the hairline with the middle and index finger of his right hand. In his debut in 1966 at age 23, Robinson pinch ran for Hank Aaron. Robinson's struggles in 1970 made him expendable in a trade as he spent the season in the minors. The 27 year old Moore was 7-11 with 1 save, a 5.22 ERA in 37 games including 18 starts for the Indians (11) and White Sox (7).

The Cleveland Indians have traded C Duke Sims to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for SP Alan Foster and RP Ray Lamb. The 29 year old Sims hit .316 with 21 HRs and 62 RBIs in 131 games for the Indians in 1970. Sims is a 2-time All Star (1969-1970). The 24 year old Foster was 15-9 with a 3.45 ERA in 33 starts for the Dodgers. Foster made his MLB debut on April 25th, 1967 for the Dodgers. Foster in real life gave up a HR to Pirates Willie Stargell that was hit completely hit out of Dodger stadium, some 507 feet. The 26 year old Lamb was 2-4 with 5 saves, a 4.78 ERA in 34 games for the Dodgers in 1970. Lamb was ranked the 64th MLB prospect in April 1969.

The Chicago White Sox have released Lee Stange. The 34 year old was 0-3 with a 6.83 ERA in 17 games for the White Sox (12) and Red Sox (4) in 1970. It appears that this could be the end for Stange. Stange made his MLB career debut on April 15th, 1961. Stange may still harbor some resentment to the Boston Red Soxs when Stange did not get a start in the 1967 World Series. Stange was also known for bowling, including a picture of him taken with a bowling ball on the pitchers mound. Stange once struck out 4 batters in an inning in 1964. With Stange struggling in 1970, the White Sox snapped up Stange on waivers and hinted if he didn't help out the White Sox, he would retire.

The California Angels have traded RP Greg Garrett to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for SP Jim Maloney. The 23 year old Garrett was 4-2 with 1 save, a 5.44 ERA in 19 games including 7 starts for the Angels. Garrett was ranked the MLB's 80th prospect in April 1970. The 30 year old Maloney was 1-3 with a 10.19 ERA in 7 games including 3 starts for the Reds. Maloney was an NL All Star in 1965. Maloney led the league with 19 wild pitches in 1963 but also led the league with 9.53 K/9 in the same season. In 1966 he led the league with 5 shut outs. Maloney was always a threat to pitch a no-no, he had in real life a 9 inning no hitter, 10 inning no hitter, lost a no hitter in the 11th and left 2 potential no hitters in the 7th with injuries. Maloney was originally scouted as a SS, but long time scout Bobby Mattick suggested Maloney go pro as a pitcher. In May of 1963, Maloney struck out 8 consecutive Braves. Chronic arm problems started to show up in Maloney's performance in 1970 as well another hold out with the Reds to start the season did not make him popular. To add to matters, he ruptured his Achilles tendon running out a ground ball and missed much of the season. With tensions between Maloney and Reds Manager Sparky Anderson, Maloney was traded.

The Philadelphia Phillies have traded SP Grant Jackson, C Jim Hutto and LF Sam Parrilla to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for RF Roger Freed. The 28 year old Jackson was 8-8 with 1 save, a 2.61 ERA in 28 games including 23 starts for the Phillies. Jackson was an All Star in 1970, he made his MLB debut on September 3rd, 1965 surrendering a 3-run HR to Reds Frank Robinson after striking out the 1st two batters he faced. Jackson was hoping to get selected by either of the four expansion franchises in 1968 as he was not getting regular starts with the Phillies, but after being a regular starter in 1969-70, he finally got his wish when the Phils moved him to Baltimore. The 23 year old Hutto hit .096 with 1 HR and 5 RBIs in 20 games for the Phillies. The 27 year old Parrilla hit .200 with 0 HRs and 0 RBIs in 2 games for the Phillies. The 24 year old Freed hit .261 with 0 HRs and 2 RBIs in 13 games for the Orioles in 1970. Freed was ranked the 67th MLB prospect in April 1970.

The Atlanta Braves have released SP Don Cardwell. The 35 year old was 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in 15 games including 3 starts in 1970 for the Mets (3) and Braves (12). It looks like it could be the end of the line for Cardwell who led the league with 38 starts in 1961. Cardwell debuted with Philadelphia in the MLB on April 21st, 1957 where he pitched 3 innings at the Polo Grounds in an 8-5 Phillies win over the Giants. In 1960 with his 1st start as a Cub after a trade he NO HIT the Cardinals. It was the first no hitter by a pitcher in MLB history when a pitcher made his debut with a new team after a trade. During the Miracle Mets run in 1969 (real life) Cardwell and Jerry Koosman drove in the only runs in a pair of 1-0 wins against the Pirates giving the Mets two winning runs driven by pitchers in a doubleheader. It is rumoured that Cardwell will seek retirement and get into the auto industry.

The Chicago Cubs have released LF Tommy Davis. The 31 year old hit .293 with 9 HRs and 69 RBIs in 134 games for the Cubs (13), Athletics (61) and Astros (60) in 1970. Davis is a 2-time All Star. Davis led the league with 230 hits in 1962 as well with RBIs with 153. Davis is a 2-time batting champion hitting .346 in 1962 and .326 in 1963. Davis made his MLB debut on September 22nd, 1959, he struck out against the Cardinals in his only at bat in 1959. Davis appears bitter that he is being released despite having a pretty good season.

The Montreal Expos have traded 1B Dave McDonald to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for 2B Ron Hunt. The 27 year old McDonald last played in the MLB in 1969 when he hit .263 with 0 HRs and 0 RBIs in just 7 games for the Yankees. The 29 year old Hunt hit .275 with 2 HRs and 42 RBIs in 132 games for the Giants. Hunt was an All Star in 1964 and 1966. He led the league twice for being hit by a pitch, 1968 (25) and 1970 (17). Hunt was the runner up in the 1963 Rookie of the Year award to Pete Rose. Hunt's motto was "some people give their bodies to science, I give mine to baseball". Hunt would have his elbow extended over the plate and get hit often (in real life 50 times in 1971 for Montreal)

Married in January 1949, his best man was Joe Garagiola. After a failed attempt to manage the Yankees in 1964, Berra joined the Mets as a player-coach in 1965. Berra was a 10-time World Champ as a player. Berra was a free swinger that expanded the strike zone with tremendous bat control. Yogi believed "90% of baseball is mental, the other half is physical"

The Atlanta Braves have announced that a Winter league injury will keep LF Rico Carty out of the line-up in 1971. Although in real life its a combination of an injury during winter ball in a collision with Matty Alou that made him suffer a fractured knee and ligament damage. Carty would eventually report to spring training in 1971 in a leg brace and would have been available in August 1971, but a blood clot in the damage leg would keep him out of the season. The 31 year old hit a league leading .339 with 17 HRs and 82 RBIs in 152 games for the Braves. During the 1970 season in real life, Carty got into an argument with Ron Reed and it was rumoured the Braves had put him on the trade block despite he league leading batting average.

The St Louis Cardinals have traded LF Vic Davalillo and RP Nelson Briles to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for CF Matty Alou and SP George Brunet. The 34 year old Davalillo hit .299 with 1 HR and 13 RBIs in 64 games for the Cardinals. Davalillo won a Gold Glove in 1964 for CF and was an 1965 All Star. Davalillo made his MLB debut for the Cleveland Indians in 1963. A speedy leadoff hitter, he had 3 seasons with over 20 SBs. Mid season in 1965, Davalillo led the league with a .345 average and eventually finished the season in 3rd in hitting batting .301. In real life, Davalillo had set a record for 24 pinch hits in 1970. The 27 year old Briles was 10-8 with a 3.89 ERA in 25 games including 19 starts for the Cardinals. Briles made his MLB debut on April 19th, 1965 with the Cardinals. Briles suggests that Bob Gibson had a big impact in his development as a pitcher as team mates for the Cardinals. Because Briles recieved a signing bonus in 1964, the Cardinals were required to put him on their 1965 roster or lose him in the draft. Leg injuries limited Briles to 19 starts in 1970 compared to 33 in 1969, the Cardinals stunned their fans and Briles with this trade. The 32 year old Alou hit .309 with 2 HRs and 49 RBIs in 158 games for the Pirates. Alou was an All Star in 1968. Alou led the league with 226 hits in 1969 and led the league with a .342 average in 1966. Alou is part of the famous Alou family that saw 2 brothers (Jesus and Felipe) 2 cousins (Jose Sosa and Mel Rojas) and nephew (Moises Alou) all play in the MLB. The Pirates made the move to make room from a young and up in coming CF Al Oliver. The 35 year old Brunet was 6-10 with 1 save, a 4.63 ERA in 26 games including 21 starts. Brunet has twice led the league in losses, 19 in 1967 and 17 in 1968.
