Call out for old advertising images
As you might know, I’m trying to finish my collection of major league ballparks since 1901. I’m kind of blowing through the last batch of deadball era parks which have very little good photographic evidence to go on.
Anyway, Instead of spending more time trying to find some images of old ads o could use on the walls/fences of these parks, I was hoping I could enlist the help of some of you to find good ones for me and post them here. It would be much easier and more efficient time-wise to have a repository of old ad images to pick from. (This could be great for any other ballpark creators also) I will post this on the logos and graphics forum too. Maybe I can get some great graphics people to come up with some cool stuff. Thanks! Robison Field
I'll try and pitch in. Here's one I found of Robison, ad on the wall partially obscured by the 1st baseman. Also have no idea when this was taken but better than nothing.

I appreciate the help, but I’m looking more for advertisement images I can use to add to my parks. Sorry I wasn’t more clear. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I posted in your graphics forum. As I was attempting this for Exposition Park recently, I had to dig deep into the web for results to cut-and-paste or even just finding a clear enough photo to research period specific stores/companies/brands. Many of those stores/brands went extinct 75+ years ago. So I combed through countless cityscape photo archives for additional photos or brands since large signboards were used extensively on buildings to advertise.
Some search terms and sources that may help: Shorpy Ebay Google Images Getty Images Digitalballparks.com "vintage photos" for a city "vintage advertising" for a city and year/decade "vintage signboard" scanned historic local newspapers (most are now subscription services) baseball auction listings Last edited by the_mad_monk; 03-19-2019 at 03:44 PM. |

Good luck with the Robison Field/New Sportsman's Park/League Park research. It doesn't seem like anyone in St. Louis had a camera before 1920. Though it led me to images with the Cubs and plenty of South Side Park outfield photos here:

I’ve already down searches and have found very little. This is why put this call out to others who might have some ads to share. I really don’t feel like researching anymore Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Can you list the ballparks and franchises needed? I've got a good handle on the Pirates and Exposition Park, but I won't spend much more time on St. Louis or the Cubs, for example, because I'm not a fan.

I don't care if they are team or city specific ads. I'm looking for any product of the era. Like whatever cigars or whiskey, or cigarettes companies.

I'm not going to post them individually, but I've always found a good source of vintage advertisements can be found through model railroading sites.

Yeah, the source material for the Gilded Age starts to get pretty sparse. But I'll post these and am going to call it a night. I hope you can get some use out of them.

My (limited) research so far shows that there were very few national brands advertising at ballparks pre-1920. And since most of the large outfield signboards were hand-painted, minimal graphics were used. They focused on large letters and verbiage that could be seen from the infield stands (wealthier fans?) concerning products that could be bought locally/regionally.
I'll dig into Polo Grounds' specific advertising as I've come across excellent historical ballpark photos. Last edited by the_mad_monk; 03-19-2019 at 10:30 PM. |
