Bernaldino Loma, RHP (Louis-Alexandre Darger)
He is best known for throwing the first pitch in MLB history. He also made three all-star teams and was a three-time playoff MVP, including twice in 1906, where he led the Dodgers to a World Series championship. He had 9 above-average seasons but never quite pushed into the top tier of value. In a time where longevity is sorely lacking, he had it, even pitching well into his age 38 season. However, his peak was never quite high enough to qualify as a Hall of Fame pitcher.

Kinnon Duford, 2B
The NL MVP in 1901, 6-time all-star, 4-time silver slugger, 2-time world champion, and world series MVP. His peak was sharp but high and he held on long enough to have a respectably long career, despite the league opening when he was 28. He didn't amaze in any single aspect of the game but was a solid all-around player who provided a lot of value to his team.

Career MLB Stats: 7149 PA, .338 wOBA, 121 wRC+, -22.9 ZR (most of that negative rating came in one single, terrible year when he was 37.)

Jenbere McKune, RHP
He was a solid if unspectacular starting pitcher for the Red Sox for 10 straight years, with WAR values from 2.4 to 5.3. He was part of their 1905 World Series team.

Career MLB Stats: 308 G, 526 BB, 892 K, 2.54 FIP, 93 FIP-, 41.1 WAR


Tim Beckman, RHP
The first reliever in the Hall of Fame, but well-deserved. He is the yardstick by which other relievers will be measured. He won three Reliever of the Year Awards and made 5 all-star teams, leading the league in saves 3 times. His 398 career saves is the current MLB record.

Kurt Pedigo, RHP
Pedigo had a few good years at the beginning of the league but quickly fell off into average or replacement level value. He made one all-star team and won a gold glove.

Manny Orduno, 1B (Hai-Liang Suhara)
Orduno was no stranger to the all-star game, getting voted in 4 times. He also won 3 silver slugger awards. However, his bat was never quite good enough to propel him into stardom after being named the number two overall prospect in 1900. He did hit for the cycle in 1903 and had a couple 5-hit games in his career.

Jerry Viera, LHP
Clearly not at Beckman's level, but a very good reliever in his own right. Viera made three all-star teams and was the Reliever of the Year in 1907. He added a ton of winning probability to his teams, even if not always the traditional closer.

Max Hartman, RHP
Hartman was an integral piece to the success of many teams and spent 4 years as the Cubs closer. He would somehow find a way to help the team win, shutting down the opposition. He made an all-star team in 1908 and won the World Series with the Padres in 1911.

Doug Reynolds, RF
Nobody could take a walk like Doug Reynolds. He led the league three times in walks and is currently second in walks in major league history at 897, only to Nate Clements by 1. However, all that walking must have bled over into his defensive play because had absolutely no range in right field, which totally destroyed all of his value. (I'm not entirely convinced the AI knows how to use the DH properly, as the current DH on the team where he was playing is actually pretty good defensively)

Devon McFadden, RHP
The 5th overall pick in 1905 out of Teutopolis, Illinois. He won the Pitcher of the Year Award in 1911 and has been to three all-star teams. He finished 2nd this past year in the Pitcher of the Year.

Jack Dulude, SS
Dulude was a 3rd round pick by the Dodgers in 1906 out of Santa Clara. His bat is average to above average, but his defense at SS is elite, adding a lot to his value.

Cole Dins, SS
Dins has elite SS defense as well and a good bat too. He has made three all-star teams, won two gold gloves, and was part of the Astros 1910 World Series team. He was the 53rd pick in the 1906 draft out of Cypress High School.

Smack Housand, 3B
Smack was a New York high school product, drafted 9th overall in 1904. He has made the all-star team twice, won a gold glove, and a silver slugger.

Alec Bagby, 2B
A 3-time gold glover at 2B, 1907 Rookie of the Year, an all-star, and MLB champion. He was drafted 35th overall in 1906 from Kentucky.

Benny Wurdeman, SS
Wurdeman was an all-star in 1910 and capped the season off by winning the MVP award. He also has elite SS defense with an average bat, leading to above average production. He was the 44th overall pick in 1904 out of College Station High School.

After what seemed to be a lot of long-term contracts last season, there are many more 1-year contracts in the 1913/1914 offseason.


Jack Gilkey signed for 7 years with the White Sox, while


Smack Housand signed for 5 years with those pesky Royals.

Both Avila and Clements got 1-year deals.

Surprisingly, Kyle Matthews is still the top prospect. He did get into 23 games this past season for the Phillies, so he should graduate from the list this year.

Since high school players are created at age 14, we now have our first players in the database that were born in the 20th century. Their date of birth field is formatted differently in excel due to the way it works with dates.

The top player this year was also the top player in last year's draft but didn't sign. It is kinda lame how often college draftees don't sign - I feel like that should be very uncommon. It's almost like the draft demands that are calculated for each player don't take their status into account.

Top Prospects:
Tomas Reed - He was the top prospect in 1909 after getting drafted 1st overall out of Oregon State. He started the season with the Twins and proceeded to accumulate 46 WAR in his first 6 seasons. This included 5 MVP awards, a Rookie of the Year, 6 all-star games, 5 silver sluggers, and the 1911 division series and AL championship MVPs.

Draftees:
Nic Wiener - The overall top draft prospect in 1909, hailing from Washington State. He did win the 1910 Rookie of the Year award and has had a well above-average career thus far, resulting in 3 all-star appearances and two silver sluggers.

Ezra Siering - The top pitching prospect in 1909, drafted out of St Johns. He needed his changeup to develop and indeed it did. He has however dealt with injuries in his career, including a torn flexor tendon and a torn rotator cuff. He so far has been an above average starter for the Brewers but with no awards to speak of yet.

Travis Demko - He was drafted out of Naples, Florida as a 3B and had been performing quite well in the minor leagues. However, the Rangers just recently turned him into a pitcher which really doesn't make any sense to me.

Jake Ivins - The top high school player drafted in 1909 failed to sign and went to Oregon State. He was then drafted by the Brewers in the 1st round in 1912. He hasn't quite broken into the major leagues as he had a couple injuries as a minor leaguer.

Award Winners:
Lewis Brennan - The 1909 Rookie of the Year. His production dropped off a bit in the following seasons but he has settled in as an above average player - good glove, light bat.

Other:
Ken Robinson - Pitched a no-hitter in 1909, had a partially torn labrum in 1910, biceps tendinitis in 1911, shoulder inflammation in 1912, and retired in 1913.

Jack Britten - Once threw 335 pitches in a college game that resulted in 72 runs for the opponent. He was drafted - get this - with the 335th overall pick in 1911 and has been a minor league player for the Pirates organization.

Gerardo De Jesus - Pitched a perfect game in AA. He bounced around between different minor league organizations and finally started 16 games for the Yankees last year.

Jack McConnell - He was the top unsigned draftee, refusing to sign out of the 6th round. He attended Illinois, making one all-star team, and then was drafted in the 1st round by the Yankees. He's a top 100 prospect and working his way up through the minor leagues.
