League Website
We go back to 1939 and replay the history of baseball from that point moving forward. There are some slight changes of course. The big one is that free agency has been introduced as well as an amateur draft. |

Joe Cronin Traded in Blockbuster Deal on the Eve of Opening Day
Monday, April 17th, 1939
After a week of negotiations, the Red Sox and Cardinals have come to terms on a deal on the eve of Opening Day. The trade will send 32-year-old SS Joe Cronin and 20-year-old minor league RHP Bill Voiselle to St. Louis for 33-year-old LHP Bob Weiland and 23-year-old minor league LHP Preacher Roe. In his career Cronin has hit for a .303 average and totaled 1711 hits, 97 home runs and 1029 RBIs. In his career Weiland has compiled an ERA of 4.30 with 52 victories and 82 defeats and has held opponents to a .261 batting average. He also has struck out 551 batters in 1241 innings and given up 1314 hits. Weiland is a free agent after the season but he will be a much needed #2 starter for the Red Sox behind Lefty Grove. Joe Cronin is also a free agent after the season. Contract extension talks with the Red Sox broke down a few weeks ago and the Red Sox felt it was best to move on from Cronin with prospect Pee Wee Reese waiting in the wings at SS |

Thursday, April 20th, 1939 The Philadelphia Phillies met their match today in Boston hurler Lou Fette. He kept them guessing the whole game and spun a 1-hit shutout. "He just worked us over," Philadelphia skipper Doc Prothro said. "He probably didn't even need a shower after the game -- he barely worked up a sweat."
