1969 MLB Draft
The top draftee this year was another pitcher--Levi Rodgers--a lefty out of Rice University. He has tons of potential and is very close to realizing it. The Brewers drafted the first high school player, RHP Brantley Ness out of Texas. The first position player drafted was a high school SS - Rocco Hollinger - former Tappan Zee Dutchman. |

1969 Hall of Fame
Aaron Bjorgo, RHP Bjorgo pitched in relief his first two seasons before taking on the starting role. From 1957 through 1968, he was a dominant ace for both the Orioles and Devil Rays, missing only 12 days total in that span. The Devil Rays turned him into a reliever again in 1969, despite putting up a 5.2 WAR season the year before. He did not perform well and retired at season's end. Initial Acquisition: Drafted 17th overall in 1953 by the Orioles out of Iowa MLB Awards: 5 J.P. Avila, 6 AS Career Stats: 3359.7 IP, 1213 BB, 2676 K, 2.98 FIP, 78 FIP-, 81.5 WAR, JAWS Owen Merchant, 1B Merchant was a doubles machine over his career, leading the league twice and finishing 15th all-time. He was valuable until his age 38 season, where his one year with the Phillies did not go well. He took a few years to get ramped up and only played 207 games through his age 24 season but then very rarely had a day off for 13 years. Initial Acquisition: Drafted 10th overall in 1952 by the Braves out of East Carolina MLB Awards: 1 Tomas Reed MVP, 3 Youssef Raadouni GG, 4 AS, 4 SS Career Stats: 10079 PA, 2447 H, 309 HR, 2 SB, .351 wOBA, 127 wRC+, 84.8 ZR, 59 WAR, 48.6 JAWS Baltasár Rivas, 2B Rivas was a high-contact, speedy, slick-defending second baseman for the Royals and Tigers, fitting in 57.5 WAR before his 34th birthday. He was signed to play in the Atlantic League when it folded and did not get re-signed in the MLB. Initial Acquisition: Signed in 1951 with the Royals out of Colombia MLB Awards: 3 Youssef Raadouni GG, 6 AS, 1 SS Career Stats: 8322 PA, 2159 H, 87 HR, 225 SB, .329 wOBA, 108 wRC+, 136.5 ZR, 57.5 WAR, 47.8 JAWS Wes Sowers, RHP Sowers career started as a mostly mid-rotation innings eater. From 1954 through 1962, he started over 35 games each year, leading the league three times in the category and twice in innings pitched. He put up a moderate 3-5 WAR total each year. Then he had a midlife revival and from age 32 through 35, he put up seasons of 6.4, 5.2, 6.2, and 6.0 WAR, winning the J.P. Avila award along the way. Those elite seasons happened with the Brewers, but he spent more time in a Marlins uniform. Initial Acquisition: Drafted 5th overall in 1952 by the Marlins out of Georgia MLB Awards: 1 J.P. Avila, 1 Youssef Raadouni GG, 4 AS Career Stats: 4180.3 IP, 1631 BB, 1782 K, 3.81 FIP, 97 FIP-, 61.5 WAR, 59.3 JAWS Noah Sylvain, 1B Sylvain was a blue-chip prospect and elite defender at 1B from the very beginning of his baseball career. He won the Gold Glove three times in high school and the Gilson Cravoa MVP his senior year. He was then drafted 1st overall and ranked as the top prospect the following year. His 70 potential contact was fully realized, along with 65 power and a 60 eye. In 1962, after 16 years in the Red Sox organization, Sylvain signed a contract with the Yankees. Initial Acquisition: Drafted 1st overall in 1946 by the Red Sox out of Wiregrass Ranch MLB Awards: 1 Youssef Raadouni GG, 2 AS, 3 SS Career Stats: 10219 PA, 2391 H, 409 HR, 25 SB, .353 wOBA, 124 wRC+, 79.9 ZR, 57.5 WAR, 46.6 JAWS Keven Allen, RHP Allen had a strange career usage pattern that leaves him in a strange Hall of Fame situation. He was a starter in college with elite movement along with good stuff and average control, but the Astros turned him into an every third-day long reliever. He only started one major league game, but still put up over 100 innings pitched every year in his short 11-year career. He appeared in 810 games and put up a steady 2-4 WAR every year, even stretching into 5+ WAR in 1963. There are two relievers with similar career totals in terms of WPA and WAR - Hall of Famer Tim Beckman, and near Hall of Famer Marvin Munoz. Had Allen pitched longer into his career, he would probably make it into the Hall, but a torn UCL that ended his career at age 32 will keep him out. Initial Acquisition: Drafted 17th overall in 1956 by the Astros out of Cal State Fullerton MLB Awards: 5 AS, 5 RelOY Career Stats: 1452.3 IP, 936 BB, 1557 K, 2.95 FIP, 75 FIP-, 31.9 WAR, 31.1 JAWS |

1970 MLB Draft
The first player selected was a pitcher yet again. Emmanuel DaCosta was selected by the Tigers out of Nebraska. He does have some injury history but has three nearly MLB-ready pitches and will just rely on the control to develop. The Pirates drafted the first high school player -- Russell Cargill from Huntington Beach. He also has a lengthy injury history and is currently out with forearm inflammation. The top hitter drafted was Justin Milne, a high school shortstop at pick 9. He is a line drive spray hitter with elite SS defense. |

Meredith Applewhite, RF Applewhite surpassed Joziro van der Walt from the '20s and '30s as the best right fielder in MLB history. He had 7+ WAR three times and regularly accumulated 5+ WAR throughout his career. His fielding was roughly average and his offensive value was driven by a great knack for just not getting out. He held a high OBP for many years. Initial Acquisition: Drafted 5th overall in 1953 by the Astros out of UCLA MLB Awards: 2 Tomas Reed MVP, 1 ROY, 4 AS, 5 SS, 1 WS, 1 PMVP Career Stats: 9475 PA, 2196 H, 342 HR, 2 SB, .380 wOBA, 146 wRC+, 17.5 ZR, 74.8 WAR, 60 JAWS Juan Alonzo, CF Alonzo retires as a top-20 CF all-time. He was well-balanced offensively with seasons of 20 HR and 20 SB, though not the same season. Early in his career, he was a highly valued defensive centerfielder, but that value was reduced in his 30s. He retires just 10 hits shy of 2000 and just 11 SB shy of 200. 1971 Top 100 Prospects
The 4th overall draft pick in 1969 is now the top prospect in all of baseball, and--surprise--it's a hitter. Rocco Hollinger is still in the low levels of the Mets' system but is progressing well enough to move into the top slot. The top pitcher is the first overall pick last year -- Emmanuel DaCosta.
