1905 season in the books (except for the playoffs). The Cardinals had an 11-10 record head to head with the Phillies, so they will have the home field advantage for the NLCS, and whatever AL team gets through the ALCS will have home field in the World Series. Here are the final standings (in two parts), final batting stats, and final pitching stats:

Who is Mitch Jones? Did he lead your league in HRs?

Mitch Jones was a cup of coffee player with the Dodgers in 2009 IRL. I didn't like the fact that he had no fielding ratings with the default database, so I re-imported him via the Spritze database, and deleted the default database version of him. As you can see from his profile page (first picture), his first two seasons in the bigs were...well...awful. But he did demonstrate some pop. His third season he completely exploded for 48 dingers, which is my league's all-time mark. According to his editor page (second picture), the pop is maybe a little high, but pretty much right on, but the batting average is forty points higher and that took everything up with it.
This doesn't happen with every Spritze guy I bring in (or obviously I wouldn't do it), but when it does happen, they tend to go off with an earth shattering ka-boom! In my OOTP16 game, I brought in a PCLer named Red Porter, who had some phenomenal seasons in my game (despite the Editor Page saying he should be a sub-.200 hitter pretty much every season). Neill Sheridan was another Spritze guy who went off this year for the Phillies, but like I said, not everyone does.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I looked him up in baseball reference and he is listed there just as a pinch hitter with 13 ABs, 4 hits-one a double.
One thing I like about historical is that I get curious about someone and look them up. |

I know the feeling as in “Who was/is this guy?” and off to baseball reference we go....
This of course is coupled with my weird foible of not liking nicknames and again off to baseball reference and then the player’s editor page, strange but I learn lots of things about players. Today I learned OOTPs Fleet Walker is actually Moses Fleetwood Walker the last Negro before Jackie Robinson. |

This one's mainly for JaBurns, as he likes to follow what Spritze guys I bring in. This year I brought in 4. Major leaguer Yurendell de Caster (decasyu01) had absolutely no fielding ratings, so I brought him in and he can now field at four different positions (yeah!). Got rid of the no-field version of him. Major leaguer Ariel Prieto (prietar01) is a Cuban starting pitcher who probably lost some years off his career to silly political squabbling, so I brought him in as a 19 year old to see what he can do with the extra years. Got rid of the older version of him. Yoshihiro Kodama (kodamyo96) is an *** guy, who came into the game as a 19 year old relief pitcher. Dick Lundy (lundydi00) is the Negro Leaguer. He came in as a 17 year old shortstop, and already had a facegen image, which probably means he's a reasonably famous Negro Leaguer. Yep, just checked, he played for a long time in many different Negro Leagues. Cool. He looks like he's gonna be a good one, but his injury rating is a little bit high, so he may be slowed by injuries. Them's the breaks I guess. I also tried to bring in Hyun-soo Kim to give him some more career time as Korean players and Japanese players have to commit to playing in their home countries for a while (7 years? 9 years? can't remember - neither here nor there), but he's a very recent big leaguer so he wasn't in the Spritze DB and the import failed. Oh well, can't win 'em all.

1st round of the 1905 Amateur Draft, with player ages as of June 30, 1906, and all the positions they are rated at:
1. Pittsburgh Pirates: Eddie Stanky, 26, 2B 2. New York Highlanders: Frank Killen, 19, LHP/LF/RF 3. Cleveland Naps: Dick Lundy (Spritze Negro Leaguer), 17, SS 4. Cincinnati Reds: Frank White, 21, 2B 5. Washington Senators: Phil Bradley, 23, LF/CF 6. Chicago Cubs: Pete Harnisch, 20, RHP 7. Boston Beaneaters: Tommy McCarthy, 19, LF/RF 8. Detroit Tigers: Jimmy Johnston, 20, 2B/3B/SS/LF/CF/RF 9. Brooklyn Superbas: Jerry Grote, 19, C 10. Washington Senators: Dave Collins, 21, 1B/LF/CF/RF 11. St. Louis Browns: Ivan Calderon, 21, LF/RF 12. New York Giants: Harry Wolter, 21, CF/RF 13. Philadelphia Phillies: Alan Ashby, 20, C 14. Chicago Cubs: Gary Thomasson, 19, 1B/LF/CF/RF 15. Detroit Tigers: Jocko Flynn, 21, RHP/LF/CF/RF 16. Chicago White Sox: Phil Leftwich, 23, RHP This was not a great draft to have lots of picks in. Anytime Phil Leftwich shows up in your first round, the talent level for the draft is not so hot. The Washington Senators had the most picks with 11. They wound up with Phil Bradley, Dave Collins, Len Swormstedt, Bobby Darwin, Hi West, Hyun-soo Kim, and some organizational filler in Mike J Sullivan, John Fick, Ed Goebel, Gene Steinbrenner, and Claude Rothgeb. We'll see if the sheer volume of talent infusion helps them in the coming years, or if the generally low talent level of those players will bite them in the butt. That's the chance you take at the draft table roulette wheel. Sometimes it's great and sometimes...not so much.

He's a great pitcher, but his hitting...Uh...needs work. He hit a sterling .064/.099/.064/.163 (5 for freakin' 78...Ugh!) with 0 extra base hits, and 0 RBI in 1905, and probably just about every single pitcher in the National League was a better hitter than he was. Ack! Also, notice how many players who win these awards are below the age of 30. Makes me think RL Scott Boras should shut his pie-hole about older players being undervalued on the free agent market. No Scott...I'm sorry, but the market is finally catching up to the reality that most players are on the downside of their careers once they hit the age of 30. If you want someone to blame, blame the franchises in MLB who keep hiring those really, really smart Ivy League dudes, who understand how to value baseball players. The days of Jack McKeon setting up shop in the middle of the hotel lobby at the winter meetings chomping on a big cigar and a table that says: "Open for business" are looong gone.

AL Mariano Rivera Award:
1. Duane Ward, RHP, 23, WS1 2. Dustin Nippert, RHP, 26, CWS 3. Bert Dorr, RHP, 19, NYY NL Mariano Rivera Award: 1. Kenley Jansen, RHP, 32, STL 2. Jack Banta, RHP, 24, CIN 3. Eric Wilkins, RHP, 24, CHC 4. Tom Davey, RHP, 26, BSN 5. Sean Doolittle, LHP, 27, PIT 6. Michael Wuertz, RHP, 25, BRO Duane Ward bagged his first Mariano Rivera Award in 1905, which is great to see for this Blue Jays fan. Especially since Dave Stieb has battled injuries and poor performance the last two years since making the 1903 AL All-Star team with Jim Clancy and David Wells. Tom Davey was also a Blue Jays' prospect before a couple of other stops in Seattle and San Diego IRL. I've had Ward in a game before and he was the best damn reliever I've ever seen. IIRC he went to nine All-Star games, and won 4 MRAs. Interestingly enough, he also started out with Washington in that game. Jim Clancy and David Wells are in the 1905/1906 free agent class as well, so I'm getting lots of Blue Jay content. At least, on the pitching side of the ledger.

AL Jackie Robinson Award:

Tyler Collins, LF/CF/RF, 25, PIT * = Exceeded service time limit for rookies, so did not qualify as a rookie, but the AI put him in anyway. Hopefully these young 'uns that the Pirates have on their team can lead them out of their early morass. 1B Steve Garvey (still just 29 next year) was acquired along with (for some strange reason, as they already had a great 3B in Robin Ventura) 3B Stan Hack during the 1905 season (in return for RP Rocky Stone, SP Brian J Anderson, and *** 1B Hiroo Ishii). Just once, it would be nice to see the Pirates not be a complete train wreck (last place in the NL four straight seasons, with an average record of 62-100 over those four seasons [where's the barf smilie Markus?]), and win some actual games. They have managed to draft quite well in that time, picking up RP Sean Doolittle, SP William Bell, 3B Ventura (mentioned above), SP Glavine, SP Hoffer, SP Scott Karl, 2B Eddie Stanky, and SP Ariel Prieto (the final two are from the 1905 Amateur Draft). As mentioned above, they used three former draft picks in a trade to get 1B Garvey, and 3B Hack, so dare we say things might be looking up in Steel City? We shall see.

Couple of things: 1) How do you set rookie limits? I have noticed strange things with my rookies.
2) How do you set the trade deadline? I am having players traded In September nothing earth shattering more of annoyance. 3) Do not know if you want to know or care but just finished 1911 in my HRD. Still messing with things but overall am happy with the way the league is running, again that could change quickly if I go off on another tangent. Have to be patient I tie myself up at times with small sample size. 4) Changed my injury file to one you sent me, thank you, but almost laughed out loud this morning. Amos Rusie came into my last draft which I liked and then in September a CEI. |

2) Game > Game Settings > League Settings > Rules > Trading Rules Check Enable Trading box, which you obviously have checked already, and set the Trading Deadline Date in the space provided. 3) Feel free to post your results in here, or start a thread and do it there. Sounds like things are moving along crisply, and glad to hear that you're happy with the league over all. SSS can be a tricky one, can't it. Even a full season can be seen as a small sample size when you stop and think about it. 4) You shouldn't be getting straight up CEIs with the file I uploaded. What should be happening is that Rusie gets an injury and then has a setback (or multiple setbacks) and is forced to retire, but immediate CEIs should not be happening, unless I've uploaded the wrong one. You can always check the injuries.txt file in Excel, and make sure that every injury in there has a Career Ending Possibility Bool (fourth column or column D I guess) of "0" instead of the few (ten or so) that have a "1". Lemme know if you have anymore questions OK?

I am not advanced enough to start my own thread. I will continue to piggy back off the experts with my own little twists, which can be read as weirdness, crazy, or any other synonym, but having fun.
CEI's are way down to a level I can live with (<1 per year) and if I get better I may try to edit that file. I find it entertaining that I have lost The Big Train, Doc Gooden, and the guy that changed the distance of the mound. My next goal or as I call them, quantum leap, is try to fine a program that will allow me to make .txt files. With that and if I can ever get the proper award pics to show then I will be a happy camper for awhile but awhile to me is a varying time period. I am trying not to get hung up on the SSS, I tell myself "Don't worry about it, what is the worst thing that can happen?" "If it irates me too much I just blow it up and start again...." |

Slipped my mind back when I posted it, but none of the position players listed in the batting stats that I posted back in post #161 will be headed to free agency in the 1905/1906 offseason. However five pitchers from the pitching stats list in that post are headed to free agency. They are Brett Tomko, Jim Clancy, Irv Young, Al Orth, and Kenley Jansen. Certainly not as much depth or quality in this year's class, but let's see how it plays out. It may be that the lack of depth/quality will lead to some crazy contracts for players that maybe wouldn't get them with a deeper class. Supply and demand I guess.
