Be Wary of Automated Personnel Decisions

I like fiddling with the managers. I try to promote from within as much as possible, and enjoy the story lines that occur in my head around the organization's personnel.

Occasionally I'm lazy or forget about hiring for a recently vacated lower level position, so I turned on the option to have the AI hire staff. I still cover most offers, but have that as a backup for when I forget or can't be bothered.

This also means that the AI may fire staff. I have a young outstanding manager that ultimately made it to AAA and was being groomed to head up the major league team once that manager decided to retire. This season, I was a little light on depth, leaving my AAA talent-less, and they were easily in last place ... leading to the AI firing the team manager. Ouch.

In hindsight, the risk of this occurring is obvious, but as their is a chance that I won't have been alone in failing to consider all of the ramifications, I thought I would pass on this quick warning.

Good post and warning. Personnel automation is a two-edged sword and you cannot have your cake and eat it too. (That uses up my quota for trite metaphors for today. )

I was lucky and he signed on at the next level down. I've decided he's an alcoholic who doesn't really care where he works; hopefully by the time I need him at the top he will have had a chance to sober up and be useful.

I never let such decisions out of my hands. OCD is my middle name.

I thought it was an OK post.

With you on this one Rich, except I have CDO, it's just like OCD except the letters are in alphabetical order as they should be

I've been caught in similar situations several times. The best workaround I've found is to create a note as a reminder to check personnel. I set it to show up right before the short season leagues end. Then, if you want, you could set another note closer toward the end of the MLB and full season minors. Little bit of a pain but it beats the surprises.

See, this is my mentality too. Any time I run into OOTP "quirks" I try to figure out some reason for it a la Curtis Borkholder.

Ah the alphabetic absolutist variation. Are you numerically orthodox too? I'm starting to hear a Jackson 5 song in my head.
