Ed Abbaticchio came in to run for Barbeau and would be thrown out at home by Paskert after tagging up at third and trying to score on a Willis fly ball. Delahanty tied the game with an RBI single but, on the play, Hulswitt was injured advancing from first to third and had to leave the game. He was replaced on the bases by Chappy Charles. In the top of the ninth, with the Cardinals still ahead by one, the Pirates had runners at the corners with two out. Leach followed with a single to score Wagner. Leach would later leave the game with a foot injury after being thrown out advancing from first to third on a Miller single. He would be replaced by Ward Miller. In the bottom of the third, with a runner on first, Ellis tied the game with an inside-the-park home run. Hulswitt gave the Cardinals the lead with a two-out two-run double. Hulswitt went on to score on a wild pitch. Only one of the runs was earned. After three: St Louis 5 Pittsburgh 2. In the top of the fifth, Wilson scored from second on a Dots Miller single combined with a Shaw error. Ward Miller scored from third when Gibson grounded to short and it was a one-run game. In the top of the sixth, Clarke scored the tying run from first on a Wilson two-out single combined with a Shaw throwing error. It was Shaw's third error of the game. With runners at first and second and two out, Irv Higginbotham took the mound for the Cardinals and got the final out of the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Konetchy put the Cardinals back in the lead with a two-out RBI single. Shaw followed with his own RBI single.
