Trade Proposal

Winter meetings, December 2017:

Baltimore trades 3B Manny Machado, 2017 stats: .312/.401/.544, 37 HR, 96 RBI, 8.7 WAR, finished 3rd in AL MVP voting
Machado accepted a one-year contract at $18 million to avoid arbitration and will be a free agent after the 2018 season if not signed.

St. Louis trades:
SP Jack Flaherty (STL #1 prospect, MLB #9 prospect using dynamic rankings, age 22), plus
SS Delvin Perez (STL #3 prospect, MLB #49 prospect, age 19), plus
CF Magneuris Sierra (STL #6 prospect, MLB #149 prospect, age 21)
plus one more unranked prospect from a list of about 12)

Would you make this trade if you were Baltimore? The Orioles were 78-84 (4th) in 2017 and their focus is neutral. They have a red dot for starting pitching (current and potential). Current budget room is $1 million but they have plenty of money for extensions.

Considering Machado is a pending FA Baltimore would be dumb to turn that down. If he's extended it might be a different story but on a 1 year deal you can't pass on that.

If I were Baltimore and didn't believe I could sign Manny long term I would make this trade.

They are getting a front line pitcher a middle infielder and starting outfielder so this gets them 6 years of control of a new core.

FYI Colorado was insulted by the same offer for Arrenado, who is close to the same player and one year older. Arrenado is controlled for two seasons, which supports the theory that the contract is a factor in Baltimore's willingness.

Is Colorado in "win now" mode? Are they competitive or in position to win next year? I would make the trade if I were Baltimore, but likely wouldn't if I were Colorado if I felt I could compete next year.

I'd want to see how my scout rates each, but most likely yeah, that seems like a fair trade. In real life though, I have no idea how to make sense of Baltimore's moves most of the time.

I think that's a pretty fantastic package for Machado honestly. Even if Magneuris doesn't hold the hype that he held previously. I'd probably do that on both side.

Neutral but they just missed a wildcard spot in 2017.

Then if I were Colorado, I'd want at least one more year with Arrenado to make a run at the playoffs.

That's more realistic than the other trades you had posted on here for Machado/Arrenado. I don't think the O's would do it in real life just because Machado is the Franchise and they think they can re-sign him long term. But it is a solid haul so it's not a crazy thought. Flaherty became a stud in my save just as an FYI.

Yes, I have simmed several years forward from the standard game a few times in earlier patches and Flaherty always turned out to be very good. I hate to give him up but I think the Cardinals have to turn some of these prospects into a legitimate superstar player this offseason. Trout, Harper, Bryant, and Arrenado weren't available and Machado was.

I tried to come up with a trade that the AI would accept (hard difficulty, same result whether on neutral or favor prospects) AND that met my own sense of fairness. All that posted helped a lot, thank you.

For the record, Machado signed an extension with me for 8 years, $220 million. I don't know if that is realistic or not given the new TV deals but it made sense in the game relative to other star contracts. I would certainly prefer this contract to Stanton's!

Anything that's below 300M for Machado isn't realistic, unfortunately. And there's a decent chance he could hit 400 given his age if a team gives him a lot of term.

The years (at 8) are too low. No player with his resume would sign a contract that ends at age 33. The contract max in the game is 10 years, but he will go over that with some opt-outs.

He's likely to need more than 10 years to get to 400M, but if he's getting 10 years he's probably getting 330-350M.

Machado signed with the Yankees in my sim... making a ton of money and one of the best players in the league.

Flaherty has been a #4-5 SP for me.

Kind of disappointed to see Machado signed with the mets for 6 years but only a total of $96 million. After a season where he hit like 40 HR, 110-120 rbi and hit over .300

Yes, that is surprising.
