Fan Interest/Player Popularity

Please fix this, just because a player is popular doesn't mean the fans interest goes down when you don't resign him. Especialy in the later stages of a career, my fans got mad in my online league when I didn't resign Tulowitzki after he had 19 at bats and hit .180 for me. Nobody should be mad when he doesn't get resigned

You're overestimating fans' intelligence. If a player is popular enough, there are always lots of armchair GMs that know better than you.

Agreed. The game should always assume that your team's fanbase is stupid. Because it probably is.

Popular players = ticket sales. If you have a bunch of no-names only the die hard fans show up. I ignore this mostly because as GM/Manager my main goal is to win ball games, not to sign players strictly to put butts in the seats. And that saves money also because popular players usually have more expensive contracts and demands. So I cast off the Yankee mentality and try fielding a good team with as low a payroll as possible.

There were plenty of fans in Detroit last year that were mad when the team finally cut ties with "The Weed" aka Brandon Inge.

Yeah, you can see how the St. Louis fan base self destructed when Pujols wasn't resigned :sarcasm:

I'm sure there are upset fans when a washed up popular player is let go, and there are happy fans when some washed up name is signed. But what needs to be verified is that OOTP assigns the correct impact to this.

Winning and history and ticket prices and stadium accessability and a bunch of other factors are more important (in some cases overwhelmingly more important) than player popularity.

Not resigning a 38-year-old Troy Tulowitzki might cost you a dozen season ticket sales. But each win over 85 might gain you 500, and each dollar you lower tickets might gain you another 500. I'm not sure anyone has ever analyzed OOTP's behavior to make sure this is done correctly.

Milwaukee Brewers attendance didn't really change either after Prince Fielder left to Detroit. Club success on the field has a bigger impact on attendance then player popularity in real life I think.

That's where fan loyalty comes in.

True for some teams but not others. Milwaukee fans love the Brewers but in some cities like LA and nearby Anaheim, stars like Chris Paul and Albert Pujols are what increase attendance.

I read a study once where the thing that correlated best with MLB attendance was the team's winning percentage.

How about data from both of you?

I'm interested to see studies on this either way. Though being from MN I tend to think the winning is more important.

The Astros prove both points, i.e. nobody shows up when you have no stars and nobody shows up when you suck.

Having fans like to see certain players, even when they are nto the best player available is not stupidity. It is just being a fan.

I used to watch a Basketball team in Calgary who had a point guard named Chip something. He was a short (relatively) 3-point shooter and he was very popular. Whenever he hit a trey they would throw a graphic up on the scorebaord that referred to him hitting "A 3 point... CHIP shot!"

He was really popular. Was he the best player on the team? Probably not. Would the fans have been unhappy if he was traded away... NO MATTER WHAT THE TEAM GOT IT RETURN? Very likely.

(You can also argue a measure of racism that the popular player was the sub-6 ft white guy over the 6ft+ black guys in a city like Calgary...)
