North American Baseball (NABA) - 2020 Opening

Denver, NABA League Office, 17:01, April 1st 2020

"Who's going to watch this over MLB?", I ask the NABA President, Henry Chadwick. "Everyone!", the Englishman exclaims.

No low expectations to be found here, as the North American Baseball league, a new 24 team competition across Canada, the USA and Mexico, launches its first ever season. 6 brand new teams from Canada, 6 brand new teams from Mexico, and 12 brand new teams from the United States, absolutely none of which are in cities with current MLB franchises - was this a hard sell to investors? "Not at all", the President chimes back, smiling like the proud parent of a newborn. "We're bringing baseball back to the people who've missed it, and closer to its roots". Roots is a fair word for the placement of the (single) Minor League affiliations too - all are located nearer to their Majors team than anywhere else. Financially, 50% of team revenues will be shared across the league, in the hope of better financial parity. If owners wish to spend equally is another question, of course.

Whether the NABA can captivate its audiences across three countries remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure - it's certainly an exciting development for baseball fans. Today, we take a look at the teams, players, and key features behind the new league. Time to play ball!

Structure

Two conferences, the Pacific and Atlantic, with two divisions each of six teams. The USA West and Mexican divisions make up the Pacific Conference, and the USA East and Canadian divisions complete the Atlantic.

There will be 120 regular season games (including Interleague play), and two teams from each division will make the Playoffs. They will cross-play the other division in their conference, 1v2 and 2v1, then advance to a Conference Championship, and finally the NABA League Series, between the two Conference Champions.

April Delivers for NABA

15:13, Puebla, 1st May 2020

Here I sit in Puebla, the site of last night's 'Featured Game of the Month' (more later), and it occurs to me just what a momentous month of baseball we've seen go by, the first in NABA's history. 24 cities across the continent of North America have hosted games for hundred of thousands of fans, new stars are already rising, and tempestuous rivalries have started their (hopefully) long stories. A recap seems in order...

The Story So Far

The first pitch thrown in NABA came from the hand of Salt Lake City Surge starter Adrian Pentz, but it was the second game of Opening Day from Mexico City that brought the first run, delivered by, of all things, a balk; CF Tom Favreau of the Las Vegas Rock Cats crossed the plate, and may well find himself the subject of a trivia question in the distant future.

Week one of the season brought more than just baseball & balks, as No.1 Draft Pick Travis Deemer (SP, Monterrey) found himself out of the opening season no sooner than he'd started it - a Torn UCL put him on the shelf for 11 months. The first 3 homer game of the year (with 6 RBIs, no less) came early into the second week of action, with CF Rafael Garcia (San Antonio) showing off for his home fans in a blowout against Portland.

Vancouver started their season full of hopes, part of a Canadian Division that stretches from coast-to-coast and puts them, slightly oddly, in the Atlantic Conference of the league. The Seadogs certainly could not find their sea legs (no groaning please) to start the season though, and entered play on April 11th with the unenviable record of 0-10, still looking for their first ever NABA victory. If the fans had to wait a little (?!?) too long to celebrate a first win, their April 11th victory on the road in Calgary certainly went some way to make up for earlier disappointments - SP Jordan Flores threw the first Complete Game in league history, and a shutout no less, giving up just 4 hits and 1 walk on the way to a 3-0 success. Trouble has unfortunately not stopped there for Vancouver, as they finished April with a 7-21 mark, but as far as iconic franchise moments go, Flores delivered something that will stand the test of time.

As we entered the later half of the month, patterns began to emerge, much as baseball fans have come to expect as the games start to go by. Tijuana had a rollercoaster month; they started a positive 7-4, then went on a 10 game loser, before recovering to finish the month at 13-15. Over in Juarez, 1B Alberto Hernandez ended play on the 27th of April with a .500 OBP through 24 games, and became the subject of quite some excitement to see if he could finish out the month that way; he would fall just short, at .496. The first big contract renewal of NABA's history made some waves in the final days of the month, as SP Julio Diaz (Jacksonville) signed a $73.8m/7 year deal. While his talent as a 28 year old leftie is not in too much doubt, he'll be hoping to improve his form from a 5.04 ERA over 6 starts through April.

Our Players of the Month? With the bat, I'll pick LF Mario Morin from San Antonio. The experienced switch hitter put up a .344/.456/.828 slash, with 11 HR and 30 RBI - quite the standard to set! For pitchers, few impressed as much as SP Fernando Arias of Edmonton - though he somehow missed out on the league's official awards, his 0.56 ERA over 6 starts and 32 IP deserves praise.

Finally, before we round up yesteday's 'Feature Game of the Month', two notes from the Minor Leagues of NABA - SP Steve Higgins of Tallahassee threw a No-Hitter against Syracuse, with 8 K's and no walks, while RF Jason Shelter (San Luis Potosi) swung his bat for the Cycle on the road in Chihuahua.

Feature Game of the Month

Mexico City Coyotes (14-13) @ Puebla Alleycats (16-11), April 30th

29,132 baseball fans came along to the first meeting between these two Mexican Division rivals in the cool, air-conditioned Alleycats Ballpark. The starting pitcher contest put two players with excellent early-season records on the mound - Bobby Garcia (6 GS, 27.1 IP, 1.65 ERA) for Mexico City, and Dave Alcantara (6 GS, 26.2 IP, 3.25 ERA) for Puebla.

The first run came in the bottom of the 1st, with Puebla's third baseman Travis Mounce singling to the outfield to bring home 2B Ben Brant from second. Dave Alcantara threw down a 1-2-3 inning to hold the lead, before Puebla catcher David Barrera started his stellar game with a modest walk in the bottom of the 2nd.

The Coyotes opened their scoring account in the top of the 3rd through an unlikely source; SP Bobby Garcia was allowed to walk on base by Alcantara, and a couple of hits later found himself crossing home plate on right fielder Roberto Gonzales' infield single. The score stayed tied through to the bottom of the 4th, where the Alleycats opened things up; doubles from David Barrera and centre fielder Brian Malone brought in runs, while Ben Brant got his second hit of the game to bring in a third. Puebla led 4-1 by the end of the 4th.

Both starting pitchers would stay in the game until the bottom of the 6th, when Mexico City's Bobby Garcia (5.0 IP, 10 H, 4 ER) gave way to LHP Victor Salgado from the bullpen in a double switch. Dave Alcantara (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER) left in the top of the 7th with Puebla still holding a 3 run lead. The Alleycats added a fifth run in the bottom of the 7th, with David Barrera picking up a second RBI. Puebla's LHP Logan Lee provided a half-inning of magic in the 8th, by striking out the side, before his batters added one more with a Brian Malone home run to take the score to 6-1. With little drama in the 9th, Puebla took their 17th win of the season, while Mexico City dropped to .500.

Final Score - Mexico City Coyotes 1, Puebla Alleycats 6
Player of the Game - David Barrera (C, Puebla), 3/3, 2 RBI, 1 BB

NABA Division Leaders for April

USA West (PC) - San Antonio Sultans, 19-9
Mexican (PC)- Monterrey Alligators, 18-10
USA East (AC)- New Orleans Lakers/Jacksonville Blue Knights, 17-11
Canadian (AC) - Winnipeg Unicorns, 16-12

All-Stars Announced as NABA Approaches Halfway

16:35, Calgary, 1st June 2020

Time flies when you're having fun, and baseball is no different. When the North American Baseball Association (NABA) announced that regular seasons would consist of 120 games, few of us realised how quickly the season would come at us - the month of May has seen the league approach the halfway mark of proceedings, and given us the first ever NABA All-Star lineups, full of the new star names that have made an immediate impact on fans with their bat, ball, or personalities.

Later on we'll take a look at the leading names in every position from each conference, and look at the NABA's full standings and stat leaders; but first, let's review what happened in the days of May!

May-be This League Was a Great Idea After All

The month began with the opening of All-Star ballots, which surely confused fans a tad more than normal to fill out - "what's the name of that guy who did that thing last week?". Nelson Sanchez, right-fielder for New Orleans, certainly put himself front and centre on May 2nd with a monster game at home to Calgary; his 3-for-3 game with 2 HR, 6 RBI and 2 BB will be hard to beat for performance of season come awards time. Not to be outdone on the same day, the Juarez Whitecaps put in the greatest comeback to happen so far in NABA, dropping a 6-run bottom of the 9th inning to walk-off 7-4 at home to San Jose - second-baseman Jason Foster sent the final 3 runs flying over the fence into a raucous capacity crowd of 52,812.

Streaks & records were a theme of May; they always are in baseball, of course, but a new young league finds them all the more fascinating, and on occasion, strange. By the 5th of the month, Monterrey's shortstop Jason Jordan had reached NABA's first 20 game hit streak, which would extend to 26 by the time it ended on the 13th. Leon Mountaineers did their best impression of last month's Vancouver Seadogs, finding themselves on a 10 game loser through the 14th; fortunately for them, it would end the next day. The 'strange' achievements that kept coming up this month were combined shutouts; Tijuana did it with 4 pitchers, Omaha managed with 5, and then Buffalo & San Jose came along with 6-pitcher shutouts in the final week of the month.

Mario Morin (LF, San Antonio) is a name that is already synonymous with the league, after his Player of the Month award for April. Early All-Star voting cemented him as the most popular player in the Pacific Conference, and his 3-for-4, 3 HR, 6 RBI performance midway through the month did no harm to his voting tallies. Puebla's right-fielder Kyle Ford became the first player in NABA to hit 7 RBIs in a game, away to Portland on the 16th of May, and indeed that day in particular had put 'something in the water' all around the league; five teams managed double-digit scores that day, including a 19-15 final in the aforementioned Puebla @ Portland extravaganza, a 17-7 tilt between Juarez and Las Vegas, and a 14-1 home embarrassment for Vancouver against Calgary. As we approached the later part of the month, Nashville's shortstop Josh Nelson hit the first Major League cycle, delivering a dramatic triple in the 8th inning on the road in Charlotte, and Winnipeg found themselves storming to a surprise No.1 in the Power Rankings with a 7-for-7 week. They would go on a 14 game tear that would only be broken up by a double-header day against rivals Calgary on the 25th.

Frankly, too much happened this month for me to report at a sensible length, so here's an abbreviated list of the rest.... Ottawa won an extra-innings game in Buffalo with an 11 run explosion.... Portland's first-baseman Eric Anderson will miss 2 months with a fractured finger... he was batting .304 with 22 RBI.... Ricardo Vasquez, 2B for Las Vegas, hit for 22 games in a row, while Jeremy de Armas of Portland will go into June on a run of 26.... SP Blake Rice of Charlotte threw the best pitching appearance of the month, with 8IP, 2H, 5K...... Omaha's star pitcher Matthew Rutledge torn his shoulder, and will miss 10 months... The Pride will miss his 1.09 WHIP and 2.96 ERA over 11 GS.

Finally, Player of the Month goes to Ricardo Martinez of Leon, who hit a monster .306 AVG, 15 HR, and 30 RBI for the month. Yes. Just for May. An honourable mention that will bring sentiment to many a baseball fan - Jared Gatchell, a 36 year-old right-fielder, had been already been cut by two organisations this season, and bounced around the waivers system, spending time in the Minors in between. It's fair to say then, that his 5-for-5 star performance with 3 RBI for Portland on the 31st of May was quite an emotional moment for Jared and his family in the stands.

This Week In NABA! Edition 1

by Henry Chadwick, Monday 8th June 2020, 10:01am, Denver

Isn't it strange how All-Star breaks can seem like a lifetime?

This Week In NABA, we look at our first ever All-Star game from Winnipeg, our first ever Amateur Draft from Denver, and set the scene for the race to our first ever Playoffs! That should be enough to get on with, I think...

NABA All-Star Game 2020

The 2nd of June saw the fledgling league head up to Winnipeg, in the great country of Canada, for a showdown between the Pacific Conference (USA West & Mexican leagues) and the Atlantic Conference (USA East & Canadian leagues). A balmy 62F day in the Great North brought with it a vicious 21mph wind in from centre field, and a capacity crowd at Unicorns Ballpark.

The game would go 11 innings before the 10-6 final score saw the Atlantic Conference take the honours in front of their 'home' crowd, and it was Ottawa's left fielder Steve Williams who would grab the spotlight by completing a remarkable 'cycle'; Williams' 11th inning triple book-ended his 3 run homer from the 1st inning, one that looked to have given the AC the win before a bottom of the 9th shock from the PC to take the game to extras; Mario Morin from San Antonio stepped up to the plate with a 2 run deficit, 2 outs in the inning, and 2 runners on-base to swat a line-drive triple to right field, tying things up. The PC then pulled back another deficit of 2 runs in the 10th inning, before Rafael Pabon from Jacksonville led a 5 run bombardment for the AC in the 11th that closed the game out for good. Pabon himself finished with 2 HR & 6 RBI after starting the game on the bench, and may well argue for a few years to come that he deserved MVP honours himself.

NABA Amateur Draft 2020

Baseball fans had an entire three days to take in the stunning All-Star game before team executives headed South to Denver, Colorado to draft the future stars of the league. A first year amateur draft is an unusual thing to experience, especially given the Inaugural Player Draft that led off the league's launch this year, but seeing bright young talent take the stage is never a boring affair. The draft order for Round 1 was determined randomly, and then reversed for Rounds 2-5.

The Puebla Alleycats were lucky enough to receive the No.1 pick, and took American 22 year-old SP Joe Gabriel, College Senior from Tulane, Louisiana. The Omaha Pride came up next, selecting American 22 year-old CF Jimmy Schons, College Junior from Arizona State. The No.3 slot saw the Monterrey Alligators select a much younger prospect, 17 year-old SP Mitch Sussman, a High School Senior from Memphis, Tennessee. There were 5 rounds in total, and the league has plenty of talent stocked for the future!

Elsewhere This Week

The Leon Mountaineers signed their RP Antonio Antonio to a 2 year, $3.8m contract, presumably to ward off interest from.... San Antonio?

Jeremy de Armas can hit a ball well, and now he's shown everyone; the RF from Portland saw his hitting streak come to an end at 27 games. de Armas has a .385 OBP for the season, with 24 RBI & 17 stolen bases to boot.

The Nashville Jammers had some bad injury news, with RP Josh McClannahan being ruled out for 9 months with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow.

The Weekly Power Rankings see new names at both ends! The San Antonio Sultans reach the top spot, having boosted their record to 39-22, while the Salt Lake City Surge find themselves looking up at everyone with a 21-40 mark.
