How many minor leagues and feeders?
I'm doing a fictional league that will start out with 10 and eventually progress to 24 teams.
How many minor leagues do I need to best make it work? I'm looking for the least amount of leagues to make it work. Is Triple A, Double A, Single A enough? And do I need to mess with feeder leagues or no? |

Yeah no feeders means a much faster sim. I've gone from no feeders ever to a league now where I only have them because I find my draft classes are way more stable, talent is consistent in my league and I like being able to follow guys early or put them someplace if I find someone I want to follow from age 14 or college through their retirement.
I have a 48-team major league and have 2 HS leagues and 2 college leagues which generate enough for 40+ rounds of draft per year. Obviously most of those dudes don't make teams, but it's enjoyable if you're into that. It was very tedious to set it all up and I did not do it all at once, I waited years before I added them. Incremental growth is easier because it gets you to playing faster. Otherwise playing without is fine too. Did that for many years and enjoyed it. |

I've played with 3, I've played with 1, I've played with a full MLB setup, and I've played with a reserve roster. It all works just fine, so it's all about personal preference.

I've always wanted to set-up a fictional league similar to the NBA/NHL with 1 main farm league consisting of all your prospects and depth players. Since it would have to be at the AAA level, I'm worried about the development of young players if they have to go straight from H.S./College to this league. How will they handle playing against older more developed players? Won't it kill their development?

Having said that, it doesn't take away from the fact that players need to play to develop. So if you have a 40 or 50 man AAA with older and younger players, the guys who play will develop, the guys who sit won't. If you platoon everybody, then everybody only gets a tiny bit of playing time. And remember, even the bench players of the future need to develop too, so they also need playing time. 1 level is fine, but keep it at a reasonable size so you can play the guys you want to develop. Having 20 top hitting prospects at 1 level will clog the playing time up a lot. Last edited by Bluenoser; 03-05-2015 at 12:24 PM. |

So if it works that way, then why can't you stick your 18 year old draft pick straight into AAA in an MLB league without killing his development?

Because you have more than 1 level, that's why. And that's not to say it can't be done, there is the rare young prospect who comes along and is ready for a high level of minors right away, but that's rare. Players will progress (develop) along the path of your minors setup. More than 1 level? - then start your rookies at the lowest and move up when ready. Only 1 level? - then you only have 1 choice. It's really not rocket science The game will adapt the development curve in line with your setup - 1 level, 2 levels, 3, 4, none. If you rush players, your risks increase. Same as leaving them too long. |
