Day nine

Freebie walk-over for Tochinoshin today so he is 8-1 and tied for the lead. Needs to find two more wins this week to secure a jump back to Ozeki rank

AND
sumo is sorta like two linemen squaring off

Day ten. Barring disaster, Tochinoshin will regain his Ozeki rank. He may even have a shot at a second Yusho!

Really nice kimarite (winning technique) from Gouedo today

Day eleven:

Tochinoshin slips and remains one win short of re-gaining his Ozeki rank but Kakuryu blew it against a rank-and-filer so the race is still on for the Yusho.

The Kotoshogiku of a few years ago was on full display today with his unique bump and scuffle style. I miss seeing him at the top of the banzuke.

Day Twelve:

Tochinoshin missed an opportunity to notch his tenth win again. With three days left and no more matches against lower ranked rikishi, this is going to get dicey.

I have not had time yet to watch the full highlights from day 13 but here is the full match for Tochinoshin if you want to see a blown decision in sumo. Completely absurd.

Day 14: Tochinoshin exacts revenge and pulls a henka on the Yokozuna. Good for him

In the midst of the hubub over the judges robbing Tochinoshin, Asanoyana is going to take the Yusho fron his banzuke spot all the way down at Maegashira 8! What a week two it's been. I am happy that Tochinoshin has his Ozeki rank back.

The final day tomorrow will be without an drama as everything is all ready decided except the special prizes.

Final day. Asanoyama takes the yusho but it was a pretty weak victory. He was given the match with Tochinoshin on Friday by a horrible judges decision to overturn a perfectly fine call by the Gyoji and lost on the final day to Mitekiumi. Oh well, at least Tochinoshin got his Ozeki rank back!

Yeah I know nothing about Sumo but that call was bizarre.

The upper ranks have been filled with non-Japanese rikishi for some time now (the only Japanese Yokozuna in the past decade recently retired and was a huge dissappointment while he was Yokozuna). Tochinoshin is Georgian and was striving to get his Ozeki rank bank. Asanoyama (the winner and benefactor of the absurd decision) is Japanese. The judges were all Japanese.

I point these things out for no particular reason.

One could argue Kisenosato should not have been promoted to Yokozuna and it cost him his Sumo career. He probably could have had at least a few good years left if he hadn't been promoted and took the time to properly heal his injury.

That Tochinoshin call was terrible and was likely the reason for the henka against Kakuryu the next day.

It was a good Basho to watch. Hakuho should be back for the July tournament. Looking forward to his return and seeing how Takakeisho bounces back. There will be four Ozeki. Which one will be kadoban heading into the September Basho?

If I had to pick one, I'd say Guiedo will be kadoban. More likely is Tochinoshin though. Knee looked off again toward the end.

The tournament starts a little early this month (7/7). Supposedly, Hakuho has been doing well in practice so perhaps he will be able to last the full 15 days this time without any nagging injuries.

A sumo thread...I'm in heaven.

Used to love when ESPN would show the sumo events. The late-90's era yokozunas were my favorite. Akebono, Musashimaru, Takanohana...all fighting for the major honors, with some really good competitors all over the rankings.

I met and became friends with a number of Japanese years ago, and became fascinated with sumo wrestling and the whole culture around it.

The Banzuke (seeding) for July has been up for a while now. It doesn't take into account anyone that will sit out with an injury. My favorite Mitekiumi may still be dinged up but I haven't heard any news about his status (local papers here in Connecticut are tight lipped on the matter). Anyone that sits out will have their slot each day filled by a rotation of guys from the next division down (Juryo). They do not actually replace a guy on the official Banzuke once it is announced. They only have a walk-over when a rikishi is out unexpectedly.

Day One of the tournament. My favorites, Tochinoshin and Mitekiumi took it on the chin today. Fun to see Kotoyuki back up from Juryo though.
