We are in Hollywood to play the Stars a 3 game series. They just swept the mighty Royals in Kansas City in 4 games over the weekend. We are 5-2 against them on the season and we won 3 of 4 the last time we played at Gilmore Field, April 24-27. But that was back when the Stars were struggling. They started the season 5-17 (.227) and in last place. Since then, they are 58-25 (.699). They are 12th in the PCL in scoring with 3.94 runs per game (Portland is #1 with 4.81). The Stars are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.87 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.44). Their run differential is +8 and ours is +144.

Portland Beavers (59-46 .562 4 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Hollywood Stars (63-42 .600 in 1st place in the PCL West)

POR: Bruce Ancona (23-L 1-2 4.88) Rookie vs. HOL: Gerry Sullivan (26-R 12-5 2.75)

Not so happy about starting the series with our #5 starter and then our #4 is going tomorrow... Ancona won his last start, the first win of his Major League career, with 3 runs allowed in 6 IP.

Sullivan is 5-0 in his last 6 starts. He is 0-1 in 2 starts against us. We pummeled him once and he gave us 1 run in 5 IP in the no decision.

We put RP Jeremy Head (27-R) on the Disabled List and recalled RP Roy Huls (22-R) from his rehab assignment at Vancouver (A). Yesterday, Huls pitched 2 innings for the Mounties and struck out 5, so hopefully he is in shape now.

We are back home to play the San Francisco Seals a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 2 of 3 in Los Angeles. We are 4-2 against them on the season and split a pair of games the last time they were here, June 24-25. By the way, we have a winning record against everyone in the West, but are not in 1st place... The Seals are 3rd in the PCL in scoring with 4.65 runs per game (Portland is still #1 with 4.81). The Seals are 2nd to Denver in HR (110 to 118). We have 73 (9th). They are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.39 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.45). They are last with 3 CG. We are tied for 2nd with 17. Their run differential is +28 and ours is +147.

SF: John Miner (31-R 7-5 3.99) vs. POR: Steve Muir (28-R 14-4 2.87) Gold Glove(01)

Miner won his last start after a streak of 7 straight no decisions. He allowed 3 runs and 10 hits with no walks and 3 SO in 7 IP. He is 1-1 in 2 starts against us this season. Both were Quality Starts and the loss was a better performance than the win.

Muir is 3-0 in his last 4 starts. He only went 2 innings last time out and hurt himself hitting a double.

Bottom of the First:

Bottom of the Second:
With 2 outs, Kim Springer draws a walk. He steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Bruce Jump throws the ball into center. Reid Reddick takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. P Steve Muir triples to left center, scoring both runners!! 2 to 0, Beavers! And he is not hurt! Jerry Suazo grounds a hit to center and P Muir scores! 3 to 0, Beavers! Jack Hinckley hits one over the center fielder's head for a triple and Suazo scores! 4 to 0, Beavers! Tim Higbee grounds out to short.

Top of the Third:
Brian Dube and Bruce Jump lead off with back to back singles. P John Miner swings away and fouls out to 3rd. Jerry Serrano grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!!

Top of the Fourth:
John Proulx and Clay Laurence lead off with back to back singles. Bill Webber swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses! A wild pitch moves the runners up... Bobbie Duvall takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with 1 out. Mike Sorrel swings at the first pitch and ties the game with a Grand Slam to center... Tie Game: 4 to 4.

Bottom of the Fifth:

New Pitcher: Tom Cruzan (26-R), a rookie with a 4.02 ERA in 62.2 IP. Glenn Snowden takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Fernando Mexicano doubles to right center. He extends his hitting streak to 13 games. With the infield in, A.J. Lee grounds out to 2nd and the runners hold... Kim Springer plunks one down in front of the plate and Snowden heads home. It was not a Squeeze Play, but it might as well have been. C Bruce Jump pounces on the ball and then cannot pick it up and everyone is safe! E-2. 5 to 4, Beavers! Reid Reddick beats out an infield hit and Mexicano scores! 6 to 4, Beavers! Springer steals 3rd. P Steve Muir swings away and pops out to right and the runners hold. 2 outs. Jerry Suazo beats out an infield hit, his 3rd knock of the game, and Springer scores! 7 to 4, Beavers! Jack Hinckley grounds a hit to left and Reddick scores! 8 to 4, Beavers! Tim Higbee doubles to left center and Suazo scores! 9 to 4, Beavers! That does it for P Cruzan. New Pitcher: Arnold Burns (27-R), yet another rookie with a 3.82 ERA in 61.1 IP. Only 14 BB, but 7 HR. Glenn Snowden pops out to left. He is still looking to extend his 17 game hitting streak...

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Bill Webber grounds a hit to right. Bobbie Duvall grounds a hit to right and Webber goes to 3rd. We get the Bullpen up. Reid Reddick takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. PH Oscar Trejo (30-R) lines a hit to right center and Lee scores! 10 to 6, Beavers! A wild pitch moves the runners up. Jerry Suazo grounds his fourth hit of the game up the middle and Reddick scores! 11 to 6, Beavers! Jack Hinckley grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the Seventh:

P Roy Huls (22-R) makes his first appearance for the Beavers in almost two months and pitches a scoreless inning, only giving up a 2 out single to Clay Laurence, for which there is no shame, since he is hitting .345. But then Huls goes to see Trudy the Trainer when he comes back to the dugout...

We are going to have to trade a lot of players this winter, or at least try to:
C Tim Higbee, because his defense is horrible (but finding an acceptable replacement may prove impossible)
1B Oscar Trejo, because he has lost some speed during the season and can no longer outrun my pet 3-legged box turtle and also because he is going to get too much money in arbitration for a back up player.
3B Fernando Mexicano, because he is injury prone and greedy.
LF Kim Springer, because he is injury prone and not a good fielder.
CF Brian Mitchell, because he is injury prone
SP Steve Muir, because he is going to make too much money for someone who strikes out so few batters.
RP Roy Huls, because he is injury prone.
I would add SP Rondey Moe to the list, but I don't think anyone else will want him. Since his injury, SD Oscar Cervantes is projecting a severe loss in his skills.

That's a lot of great talent that will not bring back the same level of performance in trades....

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Vic Kyzer (24-L). Bobbie Duvall grounds a hit to left and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. But the next three make outs!

Bottom of the Eighth:
3B Dave Risinger (27-R) draws a walk and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. Jerry Suazo is denied the chance for a fifth hit with a 4 pitch walk. SS Juan Rojas (24-S) jerks one down the right field line and over the fence for a home run!!! 14 to 6, Beavers! Tim Higbee lines a hit to right. Glenn Snowden, still looking for a hit to extend his hitting streak makes it 18 games in a row with a double to left center, his 30th double of the year and our 20th hit of the game! P Al Harrell balks in a run! 15 to 6, Beavers! That does it for P Harrell. New Pitcher: Larry McClellan (27-R), yet another rookie, but he has a 1.01 ERA in 26.2 IP. Fernando Mexicano doubles over the center fielder's head and Snowden scores! 16 to 6, Beavers! A.J. Lee grounds a 3-2 pitch to left for a hit. Kim Springer loops a hit to right and Mexicano scores! 17 to 6, Beavers! PH Jose Julio (29-R) grounds a hit to left and Lee scores! 18 to 6, Beavers! That is a new all-time Beaver scoring record! Dave Risinger grounds a 3-2 pitch to left for a hit to load the bases up with no outs. That is 10 batters to reach base in a row! Jerry Suazo grounds into a 3-6-3 double play and Springer scores. 19 to 6, Beavers. Juan Rojas grounds a hit to right and Julio scores!!!! 20 to 6, Beavers! Oh! Happy Day! Tim Higbee grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Another new record crowd!

Top of the First:

George Cowles grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Jerry Serrano grounds out to 3rd. Clay Laurence blasts one 436 ft. to straight away center... 1 to 0, Seals. Bill Webber grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the First:

Through 6 innings, we only have 3 hits off this bum...

Top of the Seventh:
Mike Sorrel leads off with a triple down the right field line... The Bullpen gets up. We walk Brian Dube intentionally... Why is that? Call to the Bullpen: Rich Larkin (24-R). George Cowles bloops a hit to right and Dube, the intentional walk, scores... 3 to 1, Seals. Jerry Serrano swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out. 2 down. We must have used up all of our hits yesterday...
The Seals hit 3 triples..

I forgot to file the paperwork on this....
P Rex Williams (26-R) was sent to Vancouver (A) and RP Sandy Bastianelli (28-R) was recalled. Bastianelli has been lights out for the Mounties: 17.2 IP, 6 H, 0 HR, 8 BB and 19 SO, so we will give him another chance in Portland.

We are in Oakland to play a 2 game set. The Oaks lost 2 of 3 here to Sacramento over the weekend. We are 6-3 against them on the season, but lost 2 games the last time we were here, July 2-3. They are tied for 10th in scoring in the PCL with 3.98 runs per game (Portland is still #1 with 4.92). The Oaks are tied for 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.35 per game (Portland is now tied for #2 with 3.55). The Oaks and Astros both have the same exact runs scored and runs allowed. Their run differential is -41 and ours is +152.

Portland Beavers (63-48 .568 2 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (54-57 .486 11 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 9-7 2.55) vs. OAK: Danny Colon (33-L 8-10 3.85)

Johnson gave up 4 runs in 4 IP last time out, but escaped with a no decision.

Colon pitched a CG win last time out with 1 run allowed and 8 SO. He is 1-1 against us on the season, but both starts were Quality ones.

We are back home to play the Salt Lake City Bees a 4 game series. They won 3 of 4 at home versus Oakland over the weekend. We were swept by the lowly Bees in 4 games at Salt Lake City, June 12-15, getting outscored 11 to 6 in the 4 games. Three were 1 run losses and the other was by 2. They are 15th in scoring in the PCL with 3.67 runs per game (Portland is still #1 with 4.83) The Bees are also 15th in fewest runs allowed with 4.84 per game, except when Portland comes to town and then it is 1.50 runs per game they allow... (Portland is still #2 with 3.53). Their run differential is -135, the worst in the PCL, and ours is +152, the best is Baseball, yet we are 0-4 against them...

The San Diego Padres are in town to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 3 of 4 at Dallas. We are 7-2 against them on the season and split a pair of games the last time they were here, Jul 8-9. They are 16th (last) in scoring in the PCL with 3.42 runs per game (Portland is still #1 with 4.88). They are last in BA (.235) and HR (48). We are 1st in BA (.280) and 9th in HR (81). The Padres are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.05 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.48). Their run differential is -76 and ours is +170.

San Diego Padres (53-67 .442 17.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (71-50 .587 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SD: Mike Bennett (32-L 4-11 4.94) vs. POR: John Krawczyk (24-L Major League debut) Rookie

Bennett won his last start with 1 unearned run allowed in 6.2 IP. Last year, he was 19-6 with a 3.00 ERA for San Francisco. He is 0-2 against us this season and has not made it out of the 3rd inning in either game.

Krawczyk is making his Major League debut today. We got him in a trade with Houston in January. He was a 3rd round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft. He got off to a rough start for Vancouver (A), but has had some good games of late.
