1955-1956 Season Review

The Red Wings D-man Fowler led in assists but D-man of the year went to Boston's Guimond.

In television news NHL games will be carried on CBS next season.

1956-1957 Season Review

Boston and Chicago topped their divisions. Chicago defeated Pittsburgh in the finals to take their 3rd Stanley Cup.

Toronto's Kluka again topped 100 points and at 29 years old became the all time goal leader for the NHL.

St. Louis goalie Francisco Toala became the all time leader in wins. Ironically in the same season he set the record for losses in a season.

NHL players tried to form a union the the owners and I took action to make sure that didn't happen.

1957-1958 Season Review

Boston and Chicago won their divisions with Boston beating St. Louis in the Cup final to win their 5th cup.

St. Pierre became only the 2nd ever 50 goal and 100 point scorer, moving to 3rd all time in NHL scoring. He won an unprecedented 9th MVP.

Boston's Josh Miller won his 2nd straight D-man of the year. Chicago's Dan Abinnett won Goalie of the year and set a new wins record.

1958-1959 Season Review

Montreal and St. Louis win their divisions but Philly wins its second cup defeating St. Louis.

Toronto's Kluka leads in goals and Montreal's Nichols leads in points.

St. Pierre and Kluka are now 2nd and 3rd in all-time scoring behind William Scholz.

Gallaher of Cleveland wins his 4th Goalie of the year award.

Curtis Butz of St. Louis sets a rookie scoring record at 74 points.

LA Sports Arena GM Bill Nicholas threatens the NHL to get an expansion team. He says if he doesn't have a team by 1961 he'll join the WHL. He is implying he will seek to turn that league into a competing pro-league.

LA and San Francisco already have NFL and MLB teams and there are rumours Minneapolis's NBA team the Lakers will go to LA. I'm sure if they do they'll change their name, there's no lakes in LA.

LA and SF are the largest cities in the US without NHL teams. Both have long histories (though off and on) with Hockey dating to the 30's. California is rich.

Based on real events.

VOTE:
YES - Admit LA into the NHL in 1961. We want the LA market badly and our tv deal with CBS is expiring soon.

Option if YES - admit San Francisco with them

NO - No one pressures us into expansion. We'll wait for a more compliant owner to come forward. Plus travel would be atrocious with St. Louis as the closest team.

1959-1960 Season Review

Pittsburgh and St. Louis win their divisions with St. Louis defeating the Bruins in the Stanley Cup for their 5th title in St. Louis and 9th as a franchise.

Cleveland's Lewin leads in goals and points. Kluka became the leagues first player with 500 career goals.

Marvin Nichols wins his 2nd MVP and Leon Fowler wins his 2nd D-man of the year award finishing with 70 points.

VOTE
Remember to vote on LA and maybe SF joining the NHL. See the previous post.

by this point, travel costs from the east coast to the west coast were getting cheaper. however, since we literally have zero teams out west, it's be pretty hard on the existing team's finances indeed.

so no to L.A and SF. as far as I can tell, we need to firmly entranch ourselves on the east coast (buffalo is still missing, and BRING BACK OTTAWA!!) however, we should think about gradually going further west. you mentioned Minnesota, perhaps the most hockey mad state in america. that would be a good start, as well as western Canada.

Buffalo and Minnesota will appear as early as '67 as an option. Though with some additional research i did since starting this project, I found Buffalo and Cleveland came close to joining the NHL in '44.

Ottawa will likely appear in the WHA (though I don't know how I'll handle that yet), then again in the early 90's expansion

1960-1961 Season Review

Montreal and Chicago won their divisions but it was Pittsburgh sweeping Chicago in the finals to win their 3rd Stanley Cup!

On a cup note only Cleveland with 0 have less Cups than the Leafs with 1.

St. Louis' St. Pierre led the NHL in assists and points. He took over the all-time scoring lead from Scholz (1,1161 to 1,119) and won his 10th MVP!

Cleveland's Spencer Stevenson led the league in goals.

VOTE
Remember to Vote on whether LA (and possibly San Fran) are in or out for next season. Scroll up for details.

Since the yes votes are leading currently what names should LA and SF take?

Los Angeles:
Blades? The team attached to the LA Sports Arena ownership? Created in 61 in the Western Hockey League as our team will be?

Monarchs? the previous WHL team?

Kings?

San Francisco:
Seals? Created for the WHL in 61?

Sharks? The name of the WHA franchise that never was and later San Jose?

Shamrocks? The old WHL team?

I'm not going to invent a new logo so your options are limited.

1961-1962 Season Review

The NHL adds the Los Angeles Kings and the San Francisco Seals. (Played the season before the name votes came in). They are added to the West which allows Cleveland to make the playoffs.

Pittsburgh (On goal differential) and St. Louis topped their divisions; with Detroit edging past Pittsburgh in the final to take their 4th Stanley Cup.

Kluka (now in Detroit) tops all goal scorers while teammate Colles tops 100 points and sets a new assist record (74) in an expanded schedule of 74 games.

Kluka is the first player to top 600 goals (611) and has moved into second in all time points (1165), behind a still active St. Pierre (1252) who wins his (yawn) 11th MVP.

The Rangers Leon Fowler wins his 4th d-man of the year

In ownership news Toronto owner Conn Smythe has sold the team to his son Stafford and Harold Ballard. With only 1 Cup in almost 50 years of play Ballard promises a new age of glory for the Leafs and if he can't achieve that he promises to line his pocketbook with the fans money (ok he never actually said any of that).

1962-1963 Season Review

It's a few years til the next expansion option so the game details will be a little lighter to speed this along.

Toronto and Detroit top their divisions and Toronto defeats Cleveland in the Cup final to win only their 2nd cup in 46 years!

St. Pierre at 37 finishes 2nd in scoring, continues to lead all time points (1,340) is 2nd in goals (514) and now leads in assists (826).

Baron goalie Steve Hart wins Goalie of the Year, setting a new record for wins in a season.

William M Jennings becomes President of the NYR.

1963-1964 Season Review

Philly and Detroit win their divisions then Philly sweeps St. Louis in the final for their 3rd Cup!

Pittsburgh's Zadeikis ties Kluka's 102 points in a season record.

Steve Hart wins his 2nd straight Goalie of the year and Jeff Chidester of Philly wins his second straight MVP.

VOTE
Adams (BST), Smythe (TOR) and Jennings (NYR) all propose further expansion, by 1967 at the latest. We are already at 12 teams (where the real NHL got to after the 1967 expansion).

Do we expand by 2 more teams in 67 or stay put for now and wait a few more years?

I say expand to 2 more teams, then stay put for a while, unless we get expansion options for the Pacific northwest and western Canada.

1965-1966 Season Review

New York and Chicago topped their division but it was 4th place Montreal beating 3rd place LA for the Stanley Cup!

Philly's young gun Igor Latysh set a new points record at 103. St. Pierre (1,449) and Kluka (1,202) have retired as #1 and #2 in all-time scoring, though Zadeikas at 1,189 can move into #2 if he plays another year.

1967 Expansion Candidates:

Vote: We're going to expand by 2 teams in 67! Majority vote wins. As commissioner I will be tie breaker if necessary. Loosely based on actual history.

I will count Winga Dinga's votes for Vancouver and Minnesota.

Note population figures are for Urban Areas in 1960/61.

Strong Candidates (actually applied for real 67 expansion):

Vancouver - Strong hockey history - will build arena - 700,000 Canadians live here - but Montreal and Toronto don't want to share TV revenue. Helps with western travel.

Minneapolis-St. Paul - Strong hockey history - will build arena - 1,300,000 people -

Baltimore - Strong hockey history - have an existing arena that will need expansion - 1,400,000 people.

Buffalo - Strong hockey history - will build arena - 1,000,000 people (plus Canadians nearby)

Weaker Candidates (actually expressed interest or rumoured to have in real 67 expansion):

Washington - Some Hockey History - no arena plans yet - but at 1,800,000 is the largest city without a team

Houston - Some Hockey History - no arena plans yet - 1,100,000 people

Louisville - No hockey history - But has a large existing arena an apparently an owner ready to take on the challenge - but only 600,000

Seattle - Strong hockey history - has Key Arena - no owners have stepped forward - 800,000 - helps with Western Travel

Portland - Strong hockey history - Memorial Coliseum will need expansion - no owners have come forward - 600,000 - helps with Western Travel

Sorry - Just not ready: (2 other Canadian cities did express interest in 67 - Quebec was confirmed as one - as yet I haven't found info confirming the other)

Quebec (300,000), Edmonton (almost 300,000) and Winnipeg (400,000) have been told they are too small to generate the money required to operate in the NHL. Local owners start dreaming of an alternate league like the AFL or ABA.

I say we need more teams In the west, so that travel would be easier. I'd go with Vancouver and Seattle. then, after that, we can go to Minnesota, portland, washington and buffalo.

how many people lived in Calgary around that time period?
