Waivers

The Flyers training camp has ended and all slide eligible players with the exceptions of Couturier and Schenn have been sent down to the AHL for more seasoning, this included Michael Raffl who will likely rejoin the big club in the event that the Adam Hall trade goes through. After a week or so of play Podein will have a conversation with Terry Murray, his former coach in Philadelphia and the current coach of the Phantoms, to see which players he intends to use regularly and which can be sent down to the ECHL.

Still with seven roster spots over the 23 man limit the job of general manager finally started playing at Shjon. First off the block was goalie Yann Danis, an easy cut that is unlikely to be picked up. Next were centers Kris Newbury and Ben Holmstrom who will provide the Phantoms with good leadership, but will not be missed if picked up by another team. Bruno Gervais is 28 and unlikely to get better, if another team picks him up it will be a blessing. Down to the final three cuts Podein found himself with a log jam at defense with Kimmo Timonen, Nik Grossmann, Hal Gill, and Oliver Lauridsen sitting at the bottom. Lauridsen is easily the least NHL ready, but is the only one who has the ability to grow anymore. Hal Gill could be the best shutdown defender on the team, but his old legs can’t carry his 6’7 body like they used to. Grossmann has constantly been tagged as the worst Flyer’s defensemen, but the fact that he keeps his name out there speaks to his abilities as an NHL defenseman. Lastly, to waive Kimmo Timonen would be an unceremonialist move and probably have Podein run out of town without second thought. At the end of the day Hal Gill and Oli Lauridsen were the ones asked to pack their bags, and they might be smart to keep them pack for a full 24 hours to see if anything comes from their waivers.

It is with a heavy heart that Zac Rinaldo was sent down to the AHL. Perhaps the time with lesser competition will help him grow his abilities into becoming the high quality player we hope he can be. If he does not clear waivers we hope he harbors no ill will against management and wish him the best of luck in his new home.

Line Combinations

Here are the lines going into the first game of the season:

McGinn - Giroux - Voracek
While it should be no surprise that Giroux will again be centering the top line alongside his running mate for the next few years the addition of Tye McGinn is something to talk about. As noted before McGinn is really a young Hartnell, however his nose for the net is actually a hair above Scott's. The plan here is to try him out on the first line and see if his linemates will be able to bring his point totals up to a first line player (5 goals in the first 15 contests).

Hartnell - Couturier - Simmonds
The McGinn move freed up Hartnell to join my second line. This group of 6'2-6'3 forwards all have the ability to make plays in the offensive end as well as their own. They will have slightly lower minutes than the 1st line to accommodate for their special teams play.

Lecavalier - Schenn - Downie
With Schenn and Downie on a line together you can expect there to be big hits and dirty goals.. Vinny will do his best to keep the line together as the leader and playmaker of the trio. Schenn and Lecavalier will earn some extra time on the 2nd PP unit with Couturier. Expect this line to get its fair share of penalties.

Wellwood - Halpern - Read
Speed kills is the idea with the fourth line. They will see an increase in minutes against highly offensive teams, and will be the ones who answer for the 3rd line's mistakes as they will make up the majority of the penalty killing core.

Coburn - Gustafsson
The first pairing is an honor given to the two blue liners that management has deemed most untouchable. With Gus still earning his special teams time expect him to have the fewest minutes of the Top 4.

MacDonald - Timonen
An important note with the defensive pairings is that they will not be the true indicator of time on ice. The "second pairing" will actually receive the same amount of even strength ice time as the "first pairing", but MacDonald will take on a fair amount of PK time alongside Coburn.

Schenn - Streit
The final pair will be a little bit more sheltered in terms of even strength time, but will look to make up for it in their special teams roles. Streit will command the top PP unit, while Schenn will join Kimmo Timonen on the #2 PK pair.

Development Report

Got the last development update before the season start (I swear I'll start playing games soon). We haves some winners and losers.

Winners: Gus got a boost to acceleration which will go a long way to keeping him on the team, while he's fast enough already the faster he gets the longer he will stay fast enough to stay with the team. B. Schenn upped his checking game, helping his lackluster defensive game. His brother, L. Schenn, also improved in a needed area as he gained some acceleration. Wayne Simmonds got even better at scoring as he looks to become a threat to get 30 goals. Wellwood's worst defensive aspect was shot blocking, so to see that improves gets me really excited for his future on the PK. Morin and McGinn both made strides to improve their strides.

And the big winners were: Couturier who became a better all around center as he improved his passing and faceoffs. And 19 year old Taylor Leier, who has boarderline offensive skills already, improving his passing and agility as he gets ready for another year in the WHL.

Losers: Jeff Halpern dodges a bullet by losing taking hits in three categories without hurting his stock (his faceoffs are still tops on the team, he isn't a fighter, and teamplay is an offensive skill), but three hits is still a lot early in the season. 4th line center is a hole that will have to be filled next year if VandeVelde cannot step in, speaking of his name not appearing on the development list has not gone unnoticed. At only 28 Gervais and Rosehill's lost skating abilities makes them expendable. Timonen's decent in the offensive zone could lead to him losing his PP time to another option. But the biggest hit of all came when Scott Hartnell's faceoffs went down for the SECOND MONTH IN A ROW!

SERIOUSLY SCOTT!? YOU HAVE TO FIX THIS! IF YOU CAN'T TAKE FACEOFFS I'M MOVING YOU TO THE WING.... oh.

Opening Night

Oct. 1, 2013

A classic puck drop for the NHL saw a lot of good competition among some popular teams. Starting the night off was two Original Six teams in the Leafs and the Canadiens. The two played a tight defensive game, in spite of the absence of one Carey Price, with no goal coming until enforcer George Parros kicked things off for Montreal. The second period ended with a goal apiece. The final two goals of the game came for Montreal as Toronto failed to capitalize on 3 PP chances in the third period, giving Devin Dubnyk his first win of the season. Toronto will continue their road trip tomorrow night in Philadelphia where they'll look to bounce back.

For those looking for a more fast paced game the Blackhawks played host to the Capitals in a 10 goal match. Ovechkin opened up the league score board just minutes into the first period, but Chicago caught up quick and then overtook the lead 2-1 on a Kris Versteeg shorthanded shot. Before the end of the first Ovi tied the game back up. The Caps started off the 2nd by taking the lead again, but after 3 goals by Sharp, Kane, and Hossa the Blackhawks were able to hold the lead. The teams traded three more goals to end the game 4-6 in favor of the Hawks, whose special teams played a perfect PK and PP on the night's 5 penalties.

The night ended in western Canada where the Jets flew into Edmonton to take away a 3-1 win. The Oilers young talent was unable to produce as they were without their top center RNH. The first week of league action will continue tomorrow night as the Red Wings take on the Sabres, and the Ducks head to Denver to take on the Avs.

Game 1 vs. Toronto

The Flyers came out swinging for their first game of the year. Things were look good for them as the Leafs had lost Captain and top defenseman Phaneauf for the start of the season. Even better the Leafs were coming off a loss the night before in Montreal, where their new top pairing of Cody Franson and Tim Gleason played over 25 minutes each.

The first period saw a trade of goals as Mason Raymond became the first player on the year to put one past Steve Mason. Later in the period the Flyers went to the PP for the first time and it was their second unit that was able to net the puck as Vinny Lecavalier was able to drive home a missed shot from Sean Couturier. The second period saw no change of score, the only moment of interest came when Scott Hartnell gave a beating to Paul Ranger. Cody Franson also left the bench early in the second after logging less than 10 minutes of ice time.

Going into the third the Flyers were being outshot 26 to 16. The coaching staff decided not to alter anything in their first outing of the season and to see what would come. A short handed goal put the Flyers down early. And with about 6 minutes left in the game Nazeem Kadri put the Leafs up by two. Couturier answered on his next shift with a goal to bring the game back to within one, but a dirty kneeing penalty sent Downie to the box and gave Bozak a chance to put the game away. On a positive note the Flyers were able to put on an additional 15 shots during the third to bring the game totals to an acceptable 31 to Toronto's 35.

After the game Coach Luce had this to say, "I'm proud of our second line. Coots did a great job tonight killing penalties and putting up 2 points to keep us in the game. I'll have to look at the numbers again but I think that line put up 8 or 9 shots. On that however, we have to see some more offense from our Top Three. They combined for just 4 shots, and we won't win many games if they aren't firing." When pressed about the Downie penalty he added, "Steve plays on an edge and you always have to expect him to get penalties, that's okay with me. Our team has to worry about killing those penalties, and up until then we had done that 4 times in a row. We'll have to wait to hear from the league about any supplemental discipline, but from what I saw on the ice I don't think Steve will be getting a call from Toronto tonight."

Pre-Game

The trade with the Coyotes has gone through. Adam Hall was sent to Arizona for 21 year old Martinook, a prospect in the truest sense of the word but someone who with the right coaching could slide into a 4th line role. Still needs to work on his defensive game, which he will do at the AHL level. Coincidentally, the Phantoms will open against their new addition's old squad the Pirates on the 14th. As for Hall, he will get his shot at his old club in a couple weeks when the Coyotes come to Philly.

The Rangers have suffered a tough loss as Henrik Lundqvist will be out the better part of a month with a torn hamstring. The Rangers will start Cam Talbot in his stead, a significant drop in talent. The King will come back right around the time the Flyers are slated to face off with their rivals in The Big Apple.

Chris VandeVelde suffered a minor thumb injury and will be listed as an injury as opposed to healthy scratch before tonight's game. He is day to day and will be ready to play next game if need be.

Steve Mason is set to start tonight in Montreal as he looks for redemption following his 4 goal outing last game. Ray Emery will get his feet wet tomorrow as the Flyers head south to play against the Canes.

Game 2 @Montreal

The second match of the season saw the Flyers hit the road for the first leg of a back to back. The first half of this two part adventure featureed the strong Montreal Canadiens, still without their franchise goaltender Carey Price. Their backup, Devin Dubnyk, played well in their season opener and looked to take on the Flyers with a good offensive team in front of him. The Flyers however had just suffered a disappointing loss to the team Montreal defeated on opening night. Now it was up to the Orange and the Black to prove that any given night they could beat any team.

The first period started with the second line of the Flyers putting up four shots in their first shift. After almost a minute in the offensive zone a Hartnell was able to cleanup a garbage goal to put his team up early. The goal woke up the Habs as they joined the game to the tune of a Brenden Gallagher goal right on Mason's doorstep. The teams entered the second period 1-1. This period opened much more defensively as it took both teams 6 minutes to find a shot. After PK Subban was sent to the box for the first penalty of the game the Habs turned their defense onto overdrive denying a Flyers shot for 10 straight minutes. But Kimmo Timonen was able to break that streak and put the puck on Dubnyk, when he let out a big rebound Hartnell hammered it home for his second of the night. Despite being outshot 5 to 11 in the second the Flyers had the lead for the majority of the second half of the period, but with 50 seconds to go Vanek was able to tie it back up.

Heading into the third both teams were pretty sore from the lack of stoppages. While some legs were tired the motor of the second line couldn't quit. Three minutes into the 3rd Timonen stole the puck off Lars Eller's stick and lets a crisp pass sail towards Hartnell, as everyone came to cover the man who had 2 goals on the night Hartnell was clear to pass the puck to Couturier who scored on the break away. With the lead the Flyers began to slack off a bit in their own end and gave Montreal two powerplays in the middle of the period. Goals by Galchenyuk and Subban gave the Habs their first lead of the game. Trying to spark his team, rookie Tye McGinn was able to find a dance partner in George Parros. While the fight didn't lead to any positive change in the offense a Georges slashing call did. Again the Flyers were hard pressed to get shot on net with their PP, but when Claude Giroux took a slapshot from just below the point he made it count tying the game up with 0:38 left on the clock. While some would be content hanging on to overtime the top line, featuring Hartnell in for McGinn, was not ready for that. A wide angle shot was able to find the back of the net to give Jakub Voracek his first of the year, and Scott Hartnell his 3rd assist.

After the game the Flyers were all smiles as they spoke to the media. Hartnell (2G,3A) and Timonen (0G,4A) were the top two stars of the game. "I've been playing with Kimmo my whole NHL career," Hartnell addressing the media. "I've been lucky. Not many guys can put up 4 assists at his age." Timonen added, "We were first roommates together when he was 18. I mentioned that to him as we were settling into our room today, and I think he wanted to give me a reason to sign an extension for a couple more years." Not quite a week into the season and Timonen sits atop the assists board, as Hartnell owns points. Pretty incredible for two guys with a 13 year history as teammates and friends.

Nice job and your doing great with the narrative... Keep it up!
I didn't even realize that Hartnell broke in with the Preds until you posted that.

The Next Four Games

Since starting the season 1-1 against the two Original Canadian teams the Flyers have not had the best of luck. They continued their season by flying out to Carolina game two of their back-to-back. Upon coming home they hosted the Panthers and Coyotes. Then after the Yotes game they boarded a plane and headed out to Detroit for a game the next day.

Game 3 @ Carolina

Emery was given the nod to start against the Canes on October 6th. The first period was pretty dry all the way around as through the first 15 minutes there were about a dozen shots total and both teams had killed off a penalty. Late in the period however Mark Streit got called for interference and at the bitter end of the PP Sekera was finally able to beat Emery for the first goal of the game. Half a minute later Eric Wellwood, one of the Flyers top penalty killers, was rung up for interference and the tired PK team gave up a quick second goal to send the Canes up 2-0 going into the break.

Five minutes into the second period Wellwood got taken again for interference; this time the kill team was able to starve off the PP. It was actually the Flyer's man-advantage that got the 3rd goal of the game as B. Schenn was able to put one up with the help of Hartnell and Simmonds. But the celebration was short lived as during the celebration Schenn hit the board at an awkward angle and was unable to finish the game. The second period also saw Downie given a 10 minute misconduct, effectively leaving the Flyers short one line.

In the third period Giroux was able to tie up the game. The tie was short lived as Riley Nash scored the go ahead goal 1 minute later. With under 7 minutes to go Emery had a mental lapse and gave up two points in 30 seconds and was pulled for Steve Mason. "Razor" Ray gave up 5 goals for his 33 shots face, while Justin Peters was able to stop all but 2 of the 32 he faced.

Game 4 vs. Florida

Every coach has at some point in time been asked why they started the goalie they did, and without fail they always answer "I needed to play the goal who would give us the best chance to win." Going into the game vs Florida that was clearly not the plan for Philadelphia's bench manager as he sent out Ray Emery again against a weak Florida team. "We want Ray to know that we have trust in him, so we are giving him this second start to show us that he is better than he played two nights ago."

In terms of time on ice per goal Emery had a great first two periods only allowing 2 goals over 40 minutes. Unfortunately, those goals came against the 11 shots he faced in those periods. And in the third period, when he was given his 12th chance of the day, he let Scottie Upshall have a weak goal. Philadelphia fans were throwing a fit as their old fan favorite put the home team down 3-0. Emery was pulled for the second time is as many games, but that was it for the Flyers who were so demoralized they let Mason get peppered with shots and he gave up 3 goals in 12 shots as well. Matt Read scored his first goal of the year, having been moved up to the third line in Schenn's absence, but that didn't save the team from the wrath of Shjon Podein who locked the media out of the locker room following the embarrassing loss.

Game 5 vs. Arizona

It is probably not advised to flip a table over after an embarrassing loss when one of the players in the room just made their NHL debut, but it appeared that Podes really got through the language barrier and made an impression with Michael Raffl who scored his first NHL goal 30 seconds into the game from a nice feed from Wellwood. The first period also saw goals from Hartnell, Read, and even Tye McGinn for his first NHL point as well, as the Fly Guys were firing at a shot per minute pace. The Flyers ended the game by dominating the Yotes in shots (41-28) and on the scoreboard (5-2).

Game 6 @ Detroit

The injury woes continued with Eric Wellwood suffering from some back soreness, opening the road for Chris Vande Velde to make his Flyer's debut. Despite missing their speedster, the fourth line again started off the scoring for the Flyers as the new comer was able to push in a rebound that Howard just couldn't get a handle on. After holding the dangerous Red Wings to just 8 shots in the first the opening four minutes of the second saw the wings double their shots and triple their goals. Today it was Mason who got pulled in favor of the backup.

The rest of the game had the Flyers playing catch-up with the 4-0 Red Wings, but goals from Giroux and Raffl were not enough as the team eventually lost 6-3. Six games into the season and with only 4 points to show for it the Flyers coaches are sitting down and making some changes to their lineup as VandeVelde joins the injury list. Following the game Shjon Podein was caught by a Philly beat writer and offered this, "We have a playoff caliber hockey team in our city. Our top line has the potential to be one of the top lines in the league, and our middle six is deep with talent. We are getting pucks on net, the problem is we just aren't getting the bounces, that is something that we can't fix." When asked about McGinn's role on the top line Podein added, "The AHL season is starting soon. These six games were a tryout period for him, but he could only get four shots on net. He needs another year or so, but I still see him as someone who can play with our top two guys long term."

Unrelated to my dynasty, the real life Shjon Podein made an appearance at the Flyers game tonight for Eric Desjardins' induction into the Flyer HoF.

Desjardins Flyer HOF

AARRGGHH!!! I missed it - he was one of my favorite Flyers, actually met him once (He lived in Voorhees NJ at the time) and he truly was a down to earth guy. Trading for him and LeClair was easily one of the top three trades the Flyers ever pulled off!!! RIP GM Keith Allen!

The Home Stand

Coming home from Detroit the Flyers were glad to have a few nights in their own beds before getting back at it with a tough three game stand against the Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and New York Rangers. Looking particularly well rested for the Flyers was the one they call "Stone Cold" Steve Mason. Mason stood tall as he faced all 27 shots against Vancouver and was lights out against the Rangers when he made an incredible 40 saves, posting his first two shutouts on the year. Over the three games his SV% was .981 with 0.667 GAA, raising his season numbers to (5-1-0, .920, 2.64). Jason Akeson (1-1) was brought up to replace Tye McGinn who was loaned to the Phantoms for the start of the AHL season. In the first 30 seconds of his second career game Akeson scored on the first shot of the night. He posted an assist against Pittsburgh as well as he settles into his role as the the 2nd line RW. A second change included giving Nik Grossmann three straight starts over Erik Gustafsson to try and bring down opposing team's offensive numbers. Jakub Voracek (5-2) was on fire at home, kicking things off with a 5 point night against the Canucks where he best Eddie Lack 4 consecutive times and added an assist on the Lecavalier PP tally which gave the game it's end score of 0-6. Voracek was also the only Flyer to score against the Ranger's third string goaltender David Leneveau, bringing him to a 5 game point streak. Captain Claude Giroux (1-4) also is sitting on a 5 game streak as the addition of Wayne Simmonds (0-4) seems to have really brought new life to the first line. But the Flyer who showed the most over the three game span was Sean Couturier (2-2) whose three point night against the Penguins gave the Flyers their biggest win of the season.

Game 8 vs. Pittsburgh

It was 2-2 entering the third. There was an air of hopefulness in the Flyer’s locker room. The Pens are probably a better team than the Flyers, but the Flyers all knew they only had to be better than them for 20 minutes and they would be tied with their arch rivals for the division lead. Having already gone 3 for 4 on the kill there was an agreement by the coaching staff to limit the amount of shifts for the third line to start the period, Downie cannot be trusted late in important games. Streit had two points on the night and was looking good, while the first pairing of MacDonald and Grossmann was a -1; the coaches switched their minutes going into the third.

Each line had its shot at the goal during their opening shifts of the period, which felt good. The crowd was into the game as well, and then it happened. Wayne Simmonds brought the puck into the offensive zone, drops back the pass to Voracek. Backhand pass to the top of the circle. Giroux shoots- HE SCOOOOOORRRREEEESSSSS! The Wells Fargo Center erupted as the Flyers took back the lead with 15 to play. Pittsburgh took their timeout, but with every replay of the goal on the jumbotron the crowd just got louder and louder.

Coach Lappy took this time to assemble a plan for the forwards lines. "We're shutting them down. 15 more minutes. Grinders I want you out there next; then Hartsy, Coots, and Read," Lappy tapped the top of Akeson's helmet in appreciation for the work he did tonight. "30 second shifts the rest of the night, smart passes, don't get too fancy out there. Vinny. Jake. You two are going to switch off playing with G and Simmer the rest of the night."

Lappy kept Akeson and Downie on their PP units to keep some legs fresh, but with the two worst defensive forwards were pulled from the lineup on even strength. The Flyers were playing with a spark they hadn't seen all season, they were out skating the Penguins and running circles around them, forcing Dupuis into taking a tripping call. The powerplay produced no results however and after Couturier came back onto the bench from a shift on the advantage with no shots on net Joe Mullen grabbed him by the face shield and asked, "Who is the second line centre of the Philadelphia Flyers?"

"I am."

"Who?!"

"I am!"

"WHO!?"

"I AM!"

"THEN GET BACK OUT THERE!" Coots fired himself back over the boards. Timonen was holding the puck back at the point, the young centre came from behind and grabbed the puck in stride as he held off the Pittsburgh defense. Between the circles Coots deked Marc-Andre Flurey and with the goalie far to the right side of his crease Sean wrapped around the back of the net to light up the lamp and put the Flyers up by two with 10 minutes remaining.

With the two goal lead the Flyers were again running circles around the Pens. The shift after the power play saw Crosby and Malkin mix up a line change, and the Flyers again went to the advantage. This time Couturier's groups started things in the offensive zone, and after he won it out to Akeson the rookie winger fed it back to the front of the net where Couturier was able to find twin again. The Flyers held onto the lead as Mason played perfect for the final minutes of the games. The two Pennsylvania clubs evenly shared the game's 74 shots, but Steve Mason and Sean Couturier were able to steal the game.

After the game Joe Mullen was seen with his arm draped around Couturier's shoulders.

Skater Statistics

Roughly 1/10 of the way through the year lets see how the Flyers skaters are doing.

On the goalie side of things let's look at the Tale of Two Tenders.

October Development

NHL

Winners
Mark Streit staying off the decline list is helping his stock on the team depth chart. Giroux continues to have strong development, even past his prospect years. MacDonald enjoys a small skating boost, but every bit helps at extending a career. L. Schenn had an awesome month as he improved on both ends of the ice and got a mental boost as he matures in the league. Simmonds gains some leadership as well, increasing his chances of becoming an alternate in the future. Again Couturier stole the show by increasing his abilities in SIX areas; all of which will aid in his growth into an elite Two-Way Forwad.

Losers
Mason gained some acceleration, not the stat I need my goalie of the future to be deep in. As he nears 40 Timonen continues to fall, now his slapshot has lost some steam and he is having some mental lapses in his own zone. Both young Erics (Wellwood and Gustafsson) names' are missing from the development report. Coburn lost some stamina as he no longer can be thought of as a borderline workhorse.

AHL

Winners
When Martinook was found to be getting to his top speed quicker Shjon Podein couldn't help but crack a smile. Rinaldo improved some of his offensive abilities. Petr Straka will now be moving the puck better and be a little bit harder to get off of it, a playmaking career could be in his future. This month treated the backend very well as both B. Manning and M. Alt showed improvement with their ability to move on the ice and improved their abilities to help out in the attacking end.

There were two Phantoms who showed great improvement over the first month of AHL action. Recently signed offensive defenseman Fantenberg looks to as though he could be a free agent steal as he was able to improve in every area of his game. Maybe it was the 6 game stint with the big club, but Tye McGinn has shown bumps in his ability to score away from the net and his work with Ian Laperriere must have given him the confidence to lay down in front of puck.

Losers
Y. Danis continues to let his age show as his skills drop is yielding more and more starts to the younger netminder. At just 29 B. Gervais is losing some offensive skills, an NHL comeback seems unlikely for the blueliner.

Prospects

Taylor Leier continues to surprise as he makes gains in each of the four major categories. Sam Morin made four improvements that will help him on the PK, a role he will likely see a lot of time with when he joins the next level. Anthony Stolarz makes a few gains as he will likely replace Danis on the AHL roster next year. Flyer's top prospect Scott Laughton also made improvements to his defensive game, his faceoff skills will earn him serious consideration for a spot with the Flyers next season. Amorosa does not project to even make the Phantoms roster, but with a few more months like this past one he could see himself earning a little bit more time as a professional hockey player in North America.

The only name of note missing from the prospect development report was Robert Hagg's.

Hartnell has been taking hits every month, but he finally hit one that will actually hurt his game. His contract will be a priority to move, but I'm hoping to hold onto him for the rest of the year. It looks like I'm going to have to find some new alternates next year.... and maybe one this year.

Game 10 @ New York Islanders

The Flyers met another division rival as they headed to New York and played their first game of the year against the Islanders. Kyle Okposo and John Tavares were able to connect twice as they each had a goal and an assist on the night. The Flyers had two multi-point games as well as Lecavalier scored a goal and an assist and Sean Couturier netted two goals and added a helper of his own. Matt Read was held off the scoreboard, but not for lack of trying as the RW put up a season high seven shots on goal.

The game began with Scott Hartnell finding the twine with the help of Nicklas Grossmann who has looked good since joining the team off the bench. Later in the period Hartnell was whistled for the first of 14 minutes of penalties in the period, as Downie served a 10 minute misconduct. The second period saw Downie penalized again, this time the Isles were able to use the advantage to tie the game. Downie was kept on a short leash the remainder of the game, but with the refs calling it tight both teams got the message and the third period saw no penalties to either side. The lack of whistles caused some heavy legs, however. Okposo sent his team up 3-2 early in the final 20, but the ever determined Couturier was able to tie the game back up not too long after. Giroux and Voracek were able to keep their high level of play going as they connected for the go ahead goal, then with time expiring in the game Couturier buried another puck and any chance the Isles had at getting a point out of the night.
