Before I write another word I would like to extend my gratitude to Charlie for all the effort and most importantly, care, that he has put into the OOTP community.

For those of us who have been around awhile the evolution of mod sites has been a windy & sometimes rocky road. The days of 3 or 4 competing sites, evolved to me hosting the files for whomever was willing to create website. Padresfan was the longest serving of that group, but as tends to happen, he moved on to other interests. It is at this point that Charlie stepped in and unified the process under ootpmods.com. creating another stage in OOTP community development.

There have been many attempts at an OOTPwiki over the years. On the surface the project looks like a no-brainer but it takes a unique set of circumstances for a wiki to be successful. Not only do you need an active community, that community has to believe that the recourses backing the effort are in it for the long haul all while including the community in evolutionary effort. in short, not only does the community need to feel they have a real stake in the effort, they need to feel the ground is stable.

Some time ago (due to a head injury I honestly don't remember the timeline, and don't want to bother looking it up) we started the OOTPwiki.info project under the banner of the Corporate League Baseball online league community, this was not done as some goofy online league marketing stunt. It was done to inject a sense of community ownership into the very DNA of the project. These things matter when you are evolving into a hobby based community.

That brings us to today.

Over that last couple of weeks Charlie and I and been dotting i's and crossing t's to bring the rights and responsibilities of OOTPmods.com under the CLB/OOTPwiki.info umbrella. ... Today it is so.

What does that mean?

For today it means OOTPmods.com is fully operational. We have a small staff of 2 unemployed, college aged children so please feel free to begin making submissions. if you have made submissions in the past and they have not been updated, please resubmit. we do apologize for any inconvenience.

for the immediate future it means that OOTPwiki.info will shortly be moving onto the OOTPmods.com server and hopefully we can fix the final issue we have been having with the wiki, it's WYSIWYG editor.

For the long term future it is our goal to turn this into a self perpetuating community, where we are no longer under the tyranny of a single person operating community resources. We imagine a time when the OOTP community evolves from a collection of game enthusiasts to a hobby based community, and that community owns and operates the communities resources in the name of, and to benefit of, this community.

But that is a long term goal, for today, the headline is.

OOTPmods.com is under mew management, and welcomes your participation.

we are upgrading and moving ootpwiki.info to the OOTPmods.com server this weekend. so the wiki will be down for a couple/few days.

this transition should not have any effect on ootpmods.com

if needed you can access the old wiki using ootp.bigbox.info during transition

Yesterday evening we experienced a DDoS attack on our DNS system. As a result, a number of individual domains may temporarily be unavailable. We have initiated countermeasures, nevertheless for some customers their service may still be limited. We apologize unreservedly for any inconvenience.

Kudos for doing this. It's no easy effort, but the archiving and work is appreciated.

over the next few days the websites are moving to an upgraded server. and OOTPmods.com will be undergoing some remodeling

service may be spotty this week. but it will be well worth it.

the wiki is acting goofy & tonight is the night ootpmods goes down for a day or 3. please be patient.

the automated migration had issues, so I had to move the server manually. That means there are a lot of manual adjustments to make on the wiki.

since it's time to massively update the website software that displays the modsdatabase (the database that "holds" the mods is a different thing from the website software, and is fine) anyway, I am going to rebuild it from scratch. I should have a skeleton ootpmods.com back up within a day, but want to leave myself wiggle room for any more, unforeseen, issues

I am having issues with the new server, (I am convinced it is a server set-up issue) wiki works fine until I login, even a fresh install has the same issue. also when I try and login to the mods DBadmin I get a server error as well.

but my leagues website is also on the new server and seems to work fine, except I had to change the way it deals with logins. I had to set it to store sessions in the database, which was a change from the old server, and I think a clue, if I had any idea what I was doing.

i am getting frustrated with this so i do have some money in the budget to throw at it, nowhere near going rate i am sure, but we are a community funded organization...

Parallels Plesk v12.0.18 on openSuSE 13.


i guess the next step is to try and compare the apache 2 installations and see what the difference is, but the old server has old software versions, it's not easy for somebody on a learning curve

anyway it is probably something simple i am missing but having a "professional" go through and set the server up is probably not a bad idea. so i'll offer the job to somebody here before i look outside the community

ootpmods will stay on the old server until i get this fixed, i'd rather pay the extra $60 in server charges (I can't imagine it would take more than a month to fix) than play with that fire (the old wiki is also still running, so i also have that to use as a comparison), i have everything backed-up here at home, but still .

this is an awesome community, there have been enough donations that we can "hire" a professional to get everything set-up and working correctly without effecting the base server budget.

we did hire a member of the community, at a substantial discount.

does anybody around here have a good understanding of Linux/apache dedicated servers? the guy from my league is busier than expected and is not sure when he can get to it

we are running openSUSE 13 parallels plesk 12 as a control panel

good news!

we re-imaged the new server with a different OS and testing has gone well. I am working with a couple tiki experts from tiki.org to get our server and website configuration nailed down.

new server looks pretty stable now, imported the wiki over with few issues. am still having the tiki experts help us with configuration before I point everybody over.

things have been insanely busy for me & I did not realize I screwed up the submission email account when I moved servers back, I apologize if somebody submitted something and had an email returned.

on the plus side, we have started working on a redesign of ootpmods.com

you can follow it's development at wiki.ootpmods.com (we decided against sharing the wiki software, at least for now, but are reusing a testing subdomain)

and when I say started, I mean started. as soon as it's "functional" we'll start using it, then make it "pretty"
