Exactly. I have a customised English name set that I'll post in this thread when I'm on my other computer. I haven't looked at the surnames, but I will at some point. |

BTW, just spending a couple minutes rooting around the site: this might not be news to our British friends here, but as an American I am shocked to learn that the #1 baby name for 2012 in Britain is:
Oliver. Seriously! Oliver! I can hardly believe it. I mean, whenever I think of a kid named Oliver, I think of this kid: And that's not a compliment. I am even more surprised to see that Oliver is #73 in America at the moment, higher than Justin, Jason, Chase, Adam and any number of other names I associate with young people and children. It shocks because I am certain no one has ever told me their new baby son's name is Oliver. |

The top girls name was Olivia as well. I know for people about my age the names Ben and Sarah crop up a hell of a lot.

Even if every Latin American country represented in the 2013 list had a separate file, that would be nine distinct namesets (DR, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Nicaragua, Panama). Creating files for Aruba/Curacao and Taiwan would bring the total of new namesets to eleven. Along with current namesets for the US (modern), Canada, Japan, and Korea, that would mean it would take fifteen namesets to cover the entire current ML player pool. That leaves 25 namesets to play around with. One of those is reserved for French Canadians (the mysterious nameset 33), which means we have 24 namesets that can probably best be used to refine the US player pool by injecting some names drawn from large ethnic groups. Although the US has been populated largely by immigrants, the fifteen largest ethnic groups comprise close to 80% of the population. The fifteenth-largest, Swedish, represents only 1.4% of the total population. 24 namesets for different US ethnic groups, therefore, is more than enough to capture the vast majority of players who might end up in professional baseball. At 24th place, you're probably looking at something like Greek or Portuguese. Frankly, off the top of my head I can't think of any major leaguers of Portuguese descent, and only two Greeks (Milt Pappas and Gus Triandos) - I'm sure there are more, but not many more. The forty-file limit for namesets, therefore, isn't a big burden if what you're trying to do is recreate baseball in North America. Of course, it's a big limitation if you're going beyond the border of the US and Canada, or if you really want to be extraordinarily fine-grained about your ethnic distinctions (do we really need an Austrian nameset when we already have a German one?). I'd love to have more namesets, but, put in perspective, forty isn't such an onerous limitation.

Not Portuguese, but Andre Rienzo and Yan Gomes are both Brazilian - that brings up another ethnicity where it's based on one language but is still fairly distinct.

Yeah, I've seen Olivias, but never an Oliver. That's why it caught me by surprise.

This is my UK first name set. No Arab names appear, just the most common names found in the United Kingdom. Fixes the frequency which isn't present in the original and also adds plenty of names. Every name is based on actual birth data from the UK.
I may redo the rest of my sets to try and provide as much accuracy as possible to the frequency distribution. Also considering deleting one of the useless ones (for me anyway) from the ethnicity name set and turning it into African American instead and keeping a separate name set for african americans and caucasian americans. (not many caucasians named D'Brickshaw and Orpheus out there) And then just changing the country database to something like 9% african american for the USA to represent their baseball presence. PHP Code:

Russian nameset
First version of my Russian namelist. You can use it freely, and I hope that Markus includes it in OOTP 15 distribution. Of course, I may be working on additional realism and bugfixing, but the foundation has been laid out.

The Olver name may be explained by the popularity of an automotive magazine named Top Gear, and a running gag/love story between one of the presenters and his old car.
